Real life husband and wife Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy portray father and daughter in this film. Not only that, Tandy is in reality two years older than Cronyn. Tandy gave birth to their second child, Tandy Cronyn, on the 26th of November 1945, the day after filming concluded.

Film debut of Guy Stockwell, older brother of Dean Stockwell.

Harold S. Bucquet began directing the film but became seriously ill and was replaced by Victor Saville. Bucquet died shortly after he left.

MGM paid a record $200,000 (at the time) for the film rights to A.J. Cronin's novel.
