Real life husband and wife Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy portray father and daughter in this film. Not only that, Tandy is in reality two years older than Cronyn. Tandy gave birth to their second child, Tandy Cronyn, on the 26th of November 1945, the day after filming concluded.
Harold S. Bucquet began directing the film but became seriously ill and was replaced by Victor Saville. Bucquet died shortly after he left.
This film was a big hit at the box office, earning MGM a profit of $1,941,000 ($26.5M in 2018) according to studio records. This film was listed as the sixth highest-grossing film of the year in the 3 January 1947 edition of Variety.
