  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: You know, soldiers on sentry duty aren't supposed to talk.
  • Skid Johnson: What can they do to me? They can fire me. All right, I've already quite. I'm all washed up in the army. This is my last day. Say, there's an idea - we oughta celebrate.
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: Yeah, the army will probably do the celebrating!
  • Skid Johnson: How about meeting me on the dock, under the moon?
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: What if there isn't a moon?
  • Skid Johnson: I'll meet you under the dock!
  • Skid Johnson: No kiddin- how about you and me going places tonight when your boat gets in? Okay?
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: No kiddin- how about you scram until I've seen some of the scenery down here.
  • Skid Johnson: I AM the scenery down here. I'm Skid Johnson, the one man army. Ask anybody.
  • Ella: Do the tropics always smell like this?
  • [runs back to the woman whose hair has just burned]
  • Skid Johnson: Say, is the rest of you as beautiful as your face?
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: No. I weigh 200 pounds and I don't wear shoes.
  • Skid Johnson: Perfect. What shall we do tonight?
  • Skid Johnson: Hello. Say you, I said hello.
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: Say, you weren't speaking to me by any chance?
  • Skid Johnson: No. On purpose.
  • Harry: How'd you do? I'm very glad to know both of you.
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: Hello.
  • Ella: You should be glad to know anyone.
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: I've never heard anybody talk so much in my life. Have you ever tried to sell anything?
  • Skid Johnson: Sure. Right now. Me.
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: You know, if you had something good to sell, you'd be really wonderful.
  • Ella: What's the matter? Don't you want the rest of your oysters?
  • Harry: I don't want this one.
  • Harry: If I might make a suggestion, you're perfectly welcome to live with me.
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: Huh?
  • Harry: Oh, Skid lives there too.
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: I suppose that makes it all right.
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: She's really a wonderful woman, Skid.
  • Skid Johnson: Murphy?
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: Well, underneath that bark and cigar smoke, she's a woman and all women are romantic.
  • Cloakroom Attendant: Check your coat?
  • Harry: Yes please.
  • [takes off overcoat, revealing a second one underneath]
  • Cloakroom Attendant: [to her assistant] Oh, there's one for you too!
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: You wouldn't want him running around New York in ice cream pants, would you?
  • Murphy: I wouldn't want him running around New York at all.
  • Ella: If Maggie were on the stage, he'd be a stage-door Johnny.
  • Ella: There's a guy, see, in California who don't care if she don't know anything. He wants to marry her! He's a - a cow baron or something. He's richer than Lucifer.
  • Henri: Lucifer wasn't rich.
  • Ella: What was he?
  • Henri: Well, he was, em, what was he?
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: Proud.
  • Henri: Proud! Proud! There.
  • Skid Johnson: You're pretty fast with the answers, aren't you.
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: No, they just seem fast. You see, you've been down here quite awhile. The tropics kind of slow you down.
  • Skid Johnson: We'll drive around. I'll make my usual cracks. If you laugh, I'll think I'm good. If you don't, I'll think you're dumb.
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: Harry puts everything he's got into his piano playing.
  • Ella: Everything?
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: Listen, Skid, you know, sometimes its easier to sell somebody, than it is your self, isn't it? I mean, it would be easier to tell somebody that I'm good than you're good, wouldn't it? Or, would it?
  • Harry: Say, Skid, did you know you had a hen with you?
  • Skid Johnson: Yeah, I know it.
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: Well, where did you get that?
  • Skid Johnson: He was in a fight.
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: Well what difference does that make?
  • Skid Johnson: Well, he got fouled! He got fouled. You didn't expect me to walk right away and leave a fowl, fouled fowl, could you?
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: Somebody might like it; but, you couldn't be very bright and like trumpet music.
  • Skid Johnson: Oh, you may be right. I like it.
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: You do? Well, what'd you like about it? I can't possibly imagine. It's just noise. You blow a lot of air into a tin horn and it comes out RAT-TAT TAT-TAT. Oh, it's awful.
  • Skid Johnson: What's the matter? Don't you like music?
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: Music? Of course, I like music. But, that isn't music, it's - well, of course, I like music. Violins! That's what I like. Violins. Soft, sweet, romance.
  • Skid Johnson: There's no romance in a trumpet?
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: Romance in a trumpet? Eh!
  • Skid Johnson: What you mean is you don't like trumpet.
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: I don't like trumpet.
  • [Skid gets up, picks up a trumpet, plays trumpet, Maggie likes it]
  • Anita Alvarez: [singing] Do it! Panamania! Nowadays every dance academy, Exercises your whole anatomy...
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: [singing] Blow it, low and slow and tender, Let my soul respond in sweet surrender, There it goes...
  • Skid Johnson: Hey Maggie! Say, you look swell out there. You made the rest of those dames look like elephants out there.
  • Marguerite 'Maggie' King: Oh, thanks.
  • Skid Johnson: Where'd you learn to walk like that?
  • Anita Alvarez: [singing] It came from the Canal Zone, Hot fiery gal zone! While fever that rages, Watch out, it's contagious! I've got Panamania, White hot Panamania! Gals from Pennsylvania, And Peru...
  • Skid Johnson: Say, I don't know what you got to be sore about. When you hired the jeep you thought you had a native guy. So, it turns out, that because of that, you got a fine, upstanding, clean-limbed, American lad
