RKO borrowed Jean Arthur from Columbia and William Powell from MGM for this film. Powell had a clause in his contract that he would not be lent out without his consent, but he really liked the script. Also, MGM boss Louis B. Mayer thought the film would increase Powell's star power.
This film did very well at the box office, earning RKO a profit of $350,000 ($8.1M in 2025,) according to studio records.
One of 17 movies in which real-life husband and wife James Gleason and Lucile Gleason appear together; here they portray Inspector Corrigan and Mrs. Hutchins, respectively.
Contemporary reviewers compared this film favorably with La cena de los acusados (1934), also starring William Powell, and they speculated how it would fare with Genio y figura (1936), which was due to be released later in the year.
