Like many films of the era, this production was originally slated to film in the Southern Sierra Nevada near Sonora. In fact, production had already begun when a warm front melted the snow and forced a hasty and expensive move to Washington state.

The World Premiere was held at the Carthay Circle Theatre in Los Angeles. However, the public would not accept the killing of Jack Oakie at the end so a new ending keeping Oakie alive was filmed before national release.

Clark Gable and Loretta Young had a sexual encounter during filming that resulted in the birth of an out-of-wedlock daughter, Judy Lewis. To avoid a scandal that would have hurt both their careers, Young claimed that she went away for a while, found the girl, and adopted her. In 1994, Lewis revealed the truth (which had long been the subject of speculation because of her resemblance to both parents) in her book "Uncommon Knowledge". It was thought for many decades--by Judy Lewis and even by Loretta Young herself--that this was a consensual affair. However, in 2015, Linda Lewis, the wife of Young's son, Christopher Lewis, stated publicly that in 1998, a then-85-year-old Young told Lewis that Gable had raped her. According to Linda, Loretta said that no consensual intimate contact had occurred between Gable and herself. Young had never disclosed the rape to anyone. According to Lewis, Young shared this information only after learning of the concept of date rape from watching Larry King Live (1985); she had previously believed it was a woman's job to fend off men's amorous advances and had perceived her inability to thwart Gable's attack as a moral failing on her part. Linda said that the family remained silent about Young's rape claim until after both Young and Judy Lewis had died.
