This was the first sound feature that John Ford directed. Unable to shout orders to the actors, he had his brother, First Assistant Edward O'Fearna dress up as a rifleman and mingle with the crowd whispering Ford's instructions to the principal actors.
John Wayne, then known as Marion "Duke" Morrison worked as a prop boy on this film.
Assuming its copyright has not lapsed already, this film and all others produced in 1929 enter the U.S. public domain in 2025.
A large portion of the film was shot without sound, with dialogue and sound effects added in later. This allowed for greater freedom in staging shots without having the camera locked down next to the sound equipment.
