  • [on the phone]
  • Jerry Larrabee: Of course, angel-face - - I'll be right over.
  • Jerry Larrabee: Hello, Baby.
  • Alice Gray: Hello, Jerry. Is everything all right?
  • Jerry Larrabee: Why, sure everything's all right. Did you ever see me when it wasn't?
  • Alice Gray: Oh, I know. But, when you get a telephone call like you did tonight and you walk out with that look in your eye, I get a cold chill. You know, it's "too sure guys," like you, that find themselves lookin' at the bottom of daisies.
  • Alice Gray: Jerry, sing something. Something just for me.
  • Jerry Larrabee: All right, Baby.
  • [singing]
  • Jerry Larrabee: Frankie and Johnny were sweethearts, Oh my how they did love, Swore to be...
  • Alice Gray: Hey, hey, hey!
  • Jerry Larrabee: What's the matter, Baby? Don't you like that?
  • Alice Gray: No I don't! I didn't ask for Grand Opera.
  • Jerry Larrabee: What do you want?
  • Alice Gray: Oh, sing me something - you know what I like.
  • Jerry Larrabee: All right, Baby. Here's something I wrote just for you. Listen to this.

  • Jerry Larrabee: I used to think, A poor foolish King, Was ruled by a gal, Was a fool. When loves the game, We're all just the same, So I guess I come under that rule. For - you could make me daring and bold, For you - could make me do as I'm told, As it stands, I guess I'm in your hands, If you'd just say you need me, that would lead me, To promise lands, And you, you, you could make me flirt with a jail, Or you, only you, follow the trail, Sinner or saint, I either am or I ain't, So tell me, what'll I do? It's up to you.
  • Alice Gray: Oh, boy! What you do to me when you sing like that. It's nobody's business.
  • [kiss]
  • Jerry Larrabee: Hello, Sergeant.
  • Police Sergeant: Howdy, Jerry.
  • Jerry Larrabee: Have a little snifter?
  • Police Sergeant: No, thanks. I never drink. I might lose my girlish figure.
  • Jerry Larrabee: Well, what's weighing on the mighty minds of the police this time?
  • Police Sergeant: Just a little hangover from the racket tonight.
  • Jerry Larrabee: I'm sorry I can't go with tonight. I've got a heavy date.
  • Police Sergeant: So do we. A date. With you.
  • Jerry Larrabee: Say, you know, you birds are gonna get awfully tired of takin' me down to headquarters - and of bringin' me back.
  • Police Sergeant: Cut the chatter, kid. You know what it's all about. Come on, let's go.
  • Jerry Larrabee: All right, big boy. I'll do it for you. That's all. You know, I'd almost like you if you weren't a copy.

  • Alice Gray: All right, Jerry.
  • Plainclothesman with Sergeant: Now, let me help you.
  • [helps Jerry put his jacket on and pats him down]

  • Police Sergeant: You're lawyer's out of town, Jerry, and he ain't comin' back.
  • Jerry Larrabee: If you think I"m gonna take the rap - - you're crazy! Spring me, an' do it quick - - see?

  • Alice Gray: [crying] Oh, Jerry!
  • [kiss]
  • Prison Guard: All right - - strip!
  • Prison Warden: Well, boys, you're going away from here. Out into the world. I hope you'll remember what I've said to you about playing the game on the level. Here's five dollars for each of you. Allowed to you, by the State.
  • Released Prisoner: Thanks, Warden.
  • Prison Warden: Good-bye. Good-bye, son.
  • Released Prisoner: Good-bye, Sir. I hope to see you again soon.
  • Prison Warden: Well, I hope not!
  • Prison Warden: Get wise, boy. Get wise!
  • Prison Warden: Jerry, you know prison isn't the end of everything; sometimes, it's just the beginning.
  • Prison Warden: You've got brains, son. Use 'em!
  • Alice Gray: What are you tryin' to do? Pin wings on him?
  • Prison Chaplain: No matter what course we have gone, remember, even the weariest river finds it's way to the sea.
  • Prison Radio Announcer: Station WTCB. You've just been listening to an overture of the Lannering Prison Orchestra. The next number on this program will be a song entitled, "Weary River," sung by it's composer, Prisoner Number 46039, Jerry Larrabee.
  • Prison Warden: All right, son. Go ahead and good luck.
  • Jerry Larrabee: Thank you, Sir.
  • [singing]
  • Jerry Larrabee: Poets say our lives are like the rivers that flow, They surely know too, Everyone a different kind of stream, So they say, All on a way too...
  • Jerry Larrabee: [singing] I have been just like a weary river, That keeps winding endlessly, Fate has been a very cheerful giver, To most everyone but me, Oh, how long it took me to learn, Hope is strong and tides have to turn, And now I know that every weary river, Someday meets the Sea.
  • Title Card: 'Weary River', was whistled - sung - - jazzed into a nation's heart - - until its popular rhythm beat on the door of a governor's office.
  • Jerry's Manager: Gee, kid, you look nifty! I want you to go out there and make 'em tear up their seats. I'll pay the damages - maybe.

  • Jerry Larrabee: Spadoni'll pay for that! I'll get him - - the rat!
  • Jerry Larrabee: Who's Alice been playin' around with?
  • Blackie: She ain't been playin' with nobody - - but I heard Spadoni was makin' a play for her.

  • Alice Gray: The warden asked me not to see ya. He told me if I loved ya that I'd never see you again. He said that you were goin' straight and it was better for ya not to be seein' the old gang - especially women like me. Huh, and I swallowed it. Hook, line and sinker!
  • Alice Gray: What a sap I've been. Just a 14-carat sap. And you! You're just a phony! That's what you are. You're just a yellow phony!
  • Jerry Larrabee: Honey, you didn't see what I saw, you didn't hear what I heard, when I got out of prison, all full of hope and pep. Why, Honey, I wasn't the Master of Melody to that crowd. I was nothin' but a rat. A freak! An Ex-Convict! Somethin' to be starred at.
  • Blackie: Spadoni's heard you're back and he says this town ain't big enough to hold the both of you.
  • Jerry Larrabee: Oh, yeah?

  • Jerry Larrabee: Go on, Blackie. Beat it!
  • Prison Radio Announcer: Friends of Radioland, I have a little surprise for you.
  • Alice Gray: Jerry, if you mean, the way you sang it; why, you can come to me.
