Many theatres that booked the film never received it because its production caused Chadwick Pictures to go bankrupt, and distribution ceased long before it was intended to.
Dorothy's note is signed "Pastoria". In the original Oz series, Pastoria was the father of Ozma, the present-day ruler of Oz.
This version of Dorothy appears to be based on three different characters from the L. Frank Baum stories. First, Dorothy Gale herself. Second, Princess Ozma, the future Queen of Oz who was raised without awareness of her true identity. Third, Princess Gloria of Jinxland, whose liberty and love were threatened by her legal guardian King Krewl.
Director/writer/actor Larry Semon died in 1928, three years after the film's release. "Variety" reported, "This screen disaster caused Mr. Semon no end of worry and repeated efforts to recoup only added to his discomfiture. Last March he filed a voluntary petition in bankruptcy, listing debts at nearly $500,000. Ceaseless worry undermined his health, making him an easy victim of pneumonia." However, Semon was involved in the production of around ten films between "Oz" and his death, so Variety's claim is unlikely.
One of the scriptwriters, Frank Joslyn Baum, was the son of L. Frank Baum, who wrote the source novel. He is credited as L. Frank Baum Jr., a name which he did not use in his own life.
