Victor Sjöström decided to make the film adaption of Selma Lagerlöf's novel after receiving a fan letter from a young woman in Gävle. She had enjoyed Terje Vigen and wanted to see Lagerlöf's story adapted and even suggested actress Greta Almroth in the title role.
