Don't watch this as 'soldier' perspective but watch this as 'soldier boy' perspective . Lower your expectation and you will enjoy watching this . Recommend to watch with family too . Ignore the rating and just watch .

This film is based on the true story of Sergei Aleshkov, played wonderfully by Andrey Andreev. Sergei was a six-year old boy who had his parents executed by the Germans on their farm before he escaped into the forest.

He survived his ordeal in the forest, and was adopted by Russian rifle company as their mascot.

He actually participated in several dangerous activities, such as discovering German troops hiding on a Russian farm, re-attaching communication wires after the first soldier sent to do it was wounded, and riding and walking with his unit the whole length of the war. He was even decorated by a general for his courageous acts.

The film is amazingly engrossing, as you cannot help be emotionally affected by his ordeal. I viewed the film in Russian with no subtitles; you really don't need them to know what is going on. In my opinion, this is the second best Russian WW 2 ever made after Enemy at the Gate.

I really loved this film, it changed the way I saw the Soviets. Instead of seeing them as ruthless soldiers, I now see them as any average country trying to thrive. There's no blood, no gore, and is really child friendly. I would definitely recommend this film to people, seeing as it's child friendly. And what made me love it more is that you can literally just watch it for free, there are some cheesy scenes but just fall asleep when your children are still watching.

War strikes out, and noone is spared . and i guess this is why the russian government goes in sponsoring movies like this, to make people not forget the great motherland war e.g 2nd world war and peoples duties if so happens again. its soldatik and patriotic to the fingertips and does tell a story that supposedly shall have occured, but as a filmographic 8th wonder of the world it aint.

but it presents a new supernova on the russian silverscreen, a kid actor that do not have camera anxiety at all, and acts like a welltrained robotnik, i wonder where they find this talent, and im sure the main adult actors have had a good laugh at the end of many takes, because that little hedgehogtan a boy may tip the enemies wheelbarrow at a blink of an eye.

as a history lesson its not a good film, it has some nice old relics of army equipment, and a heck of an explotion here and there, and a little bit of love, so if you wanna get charmed by the russian rascal number one then do like the grumpy old ma, and swipe through it asap.after all its paid by the government...

It feels weird giving it seven stars, but in spite of it being a Russian-made film, it wasn't too bad. The little boy in the lead role did a good job. Of course it had all of the usual Russian movie tropes, like silly dialog, everyone being happy about being in the army, and the male commander falling in love with a female subordinate. The fX and photography were good, and even the acting was okay. It's supposedly a true story, but the filmmakers make that somewhat hard to believe, because some of the things that are portrayed have to be fictional. For one example, in the very beginning, the boy's aunt helps him escape from the Germans by putting him outside of the house through a window and she is immediately shot dead from outside, but the boy gets away without interference.

Overall, I wouldn't watch it again, in spite of my 7-star rating, but I'd recommend others to see it at least once.

Shows the real tragedy and reality of war. Great performance by the whole cast. 10/10.

A pretty emotional movie, but one I was glad to find. At first I didn't know about watching it due to the fact it was in Russian however I was lucky to find that there are English subtitles, definitely a good war movie to watch or just a good movie to watch in general. Please consider watching this!

I did not like this film because there was way too much coddling of this kid, it made the movie unrealistic to me,war is hell and they try and make looking after this displaced kid more like a soap opera, give me a break

Beautifull movie and great acting of little kid. This is movie wich is under rated becouse lot of people dont know that movie but Russian make lot of good war movies.

From the preview, I thought this was going to be a good movie. It's been on my watchlist for a long time. I got about twenty minutes into it before I stopped, and that was a painful twenty minutes - maybe minus the first few minutes where the kid was sitting in the tree, before I knew it wasn't going to get any better. And minus the time I got up and went into the kitchen to wash my plate. Everyone fawns over this little kid. When a soldier first brings him into an army tent, once the other soldiers see that he has a child with him, they all rush over, as if they're helping to carry the kid. It doesn't take four men to move a child across a room. Once they move the kid to the medical tent, then it's the nurses' turn to all surround him, which at least makes *some* sense.

A simple and touching film about a boy who turns out to be a little soldier in a war, right in the line of fire. Sad an positive at the same time.

This film amplifies the horrors of war by showing it through the eyes of an innocent boys. Good acting and interesting story!

WOW that was great movie. The film is great and there really are moments in the movie when it's sad,and you can crie and there are moments where that little sweet boy who's acting is really great can make you laugh. I belive Andrey Andreev will be realy famous and great actor. By the way, I don't write reviews about movies on IMDB, but this one really deserves a higher rating than 6,5 stars but I gave 10 stars because movie was really great. By the way, Russians make great war movies for small budget, unlike American films that invest millions.

I like movie its great,little kid make great acting in movie. You can see how much emotion is in movie by his great acting. I belive he will be good actor in future.

It was a good movie and quite suspenseful at times. The horror of war through the eyes of a young innocent kid and the outcome of this experience. Wow. War sucks.

This is really a real war movie with a lot of emotions. That cute guy starring in the movie really made me cry on a couple of scenes. I don't usually cry about movies, but this movie emotionally destroyed me and I had to shed a tear. These Russians really know how to make good movies. I bow to the lead actor the boy for his well-done acting and really the film is special only because of his acting. The guy is a talent and I really see him in the future as the best actor. Talent has only to be seen by other filmmakers.

Soldier Boy is a tale I initially felt was rather far fetched. A six year old child adopted by a battalion of Soviet soldiers, after the death of his family. In an active war zone!

Well, not only is this a remarkable tale its also true. Some creative license has been taken with the facts but for the most part, this is a reasonably accurate depiction.

The story's a compelling one. Its sad but more often than not, uplifting. Acting is some of the best I've seen and with the lead being so young, his performance can only be described as Oscar worthy.

He's utterly convincing and for that matter endearing. At times too, his childish seriousness is amusing, You can't help but smile. I can fully appreciate why the soldiers enjoyed his company.

In summary, this is a top shelf effort. One of the best films I've seen in a very long time and it comes highly recommended. Its also free to watch on Youtube.

It's not full of blood it's more cute story about real event from history wich happens. Its not fake events. That was true. And what did this little kid do in movie is fantastic. I like this movie a lot. This actor had only 5 y when he act in this movie he must be a great Russian talen.

After watching the first five minutes I was going to stop watching for two reasons. One is that it was terribly sad and I wasn't sure I wanted to go through the emotional roller coaster. Two was that it was in Russian and so I had to read the subtitles. I am so glad I stuck with it. It is based on a true story so I usually like those. What was amazing was the child who starred in it. He was only five when he filmed the movie. I have seen Shirley Temple but this kid was as good as or better than her. All I could think of while watching this movie is that it was wonderful. Don't be put off by reading subtitles. You get used to it.
