If you know the song you probably love it; if you don't know it by the time you'll hear it you will love it. This highly memorable musical moment by Michael
McDonald never fails, and even if you're not much into R&B you probably heard Nate Dogg sampling the song's motif in one of his hits. That amazing bass line, along
with McDonald's fantastic voice just tells everything you need to hear even though it's a sad song about a failed relationship. As for the video for it, it has its
moments but don't expect seeing great spectacles as the musical clips used to be (most of them, but not all).
Here, blue-eyed soul man and former Doobie Brothers vocal appears performing the song while playing the piano, images captured and edited in a sober and quiet
manner, with reduced camera movements and a few close-ups. In between his act, there's rememberances he has of a woman he loved, showing their good times and bad
times together (that's when Michael has to show some acting skills and it's kinda funny because both he and the girl lip-synch to a line from the song - "Don't say
that!"), and in one particular moment she appears behind him as an angel who haunts him, she's infiltrates in his thoughts yet he knows that they're not in love
anymore.
While the video may look dated or corny, the song is definitely not. More than 40 years ever since McDonald released it, on his solo debut album "If That's What It
Takes" (the title track is insanely awesome, check it out if you can, it's so full of energy and fun), and it never gets old. Perfect lyrics, perfect sound, perfect
beat and yes that bass line kills everything, it's THAT good. Visuals aren't so important anyway, so give yourself a chance to watch it and hear it over and over. 8/10.
