Amid this cinematic frenzy, it’s high time we shed light on some hidden gems, those lesser-known, arthouse indie dramas that truly deserve your time and attention. If we are wondering where to begin, don’t worry; we have you covered. Below, we have rounded up our list of the best Netflix original movies that will captivate your...

‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ Reveals First Look at Daniel Diemer’s Tyson in Season 2 — and Finds Its Nico and Bianca
Image
Some highly anticipated demigods are headed to Camp Half-Blood, and during the show’s Hall H presentation at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday morning, fans got their first look at them.

Featuring series stars Walker Scobell, Leah Sava Jeffries, Aryan Simhadri, Charlie Bushnell, Dior Goodjohn and Daniel Diemer, the panel debuted a full teaser for Season 2 of the Disney+ series, and in it came the first footage of Percy’s half-brother Tyson (Diemer).

As an added bonus, fans learned that Season 2 will officially premiere on Dec. 10. You can watch the teaser below.

Tyson is a cyclops who’s really excited to help his brother but isn’t exactly welcome right away, given how Thalia died. Best known for playing Paul Munsky in Netflix’s “The Half of It,” and starring as Scott Bentland in “Under the Bridge” alongside Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough, Diemer’s casting was announced almost exactly a year ago,...

The Best Indie Movies on Netflix: 36 Overlooked Films Streaming This July
Image
[Editor’s note: This list was originally published in August 2021, and has since been updated multiple times.]

There’s no shortage of movies to stream on Netflix. Any subscriber that logs onto the platform these days will likely see a bunch of new releases, gruesome horror films, and sweet rom-coms. But with so many big, flashy studio films and Netflix originals to choose from, it can be difficult for the indie films that flood the streamer to stand out.

For sure, a place in Netflix’s library can be a great opportunity for independent cinema to find an audience it otherwise wouldn’t reach in theaters or on television. But for all the big starry auteur films that Netflix picks up and turns into major awards contenders (see “Marriage Story” or “I’m Thinking of Ending Things”), there’s an under-the-radar, overlooked pick that doesn’t have the names or prestige attached to it, and feels destined to serve as mere library filler as people look for the films they do know.

‘All The Men I Met But Never Dated’ Review: Queer Short Film Challenges The Concept Of “The Closet”
Image
It’s true that queer representation in cinema has come a long way from what it used to be, and society has evolved enough to make way for important and timely conversations on the LGBTQ+ community. Now, if you take a look at the highest-rated queer movies of all time, you’ll come across titles like Bpm, Moonlight, God’s Own Country, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Shiva Baby, The Half of It, The Handmaiden, Dog Day Afternoon, Love Lies Bleeding, The Power of the Dog, Carol, and more. Upon closer examination, you’ll realize that a lot of these films are very White or they are centered around stories set in first-world countries because they are either more marketable and more accessible than queer tales from the disenfranchised sections of society. This phenomenon is not only hindering the queer discourse but also preventing the queer cinema of third-world countries from progressing.

Inside Out 2 Has A Secret Connection To Pixar's $496 Million Surprise From Last Year
Image
Inside Out 2 has a hidden connection to a Pixar hit from the previous year. The 2024 Pixar movie is a direct sequel to their 2015 movie Inside Out, which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature the following year. The new installment features the return of many original emotions populating the world inside the head of young girl Riley including Joy (Amy Poehler), Sadness (Phyllis Smith), Anger (Lewis Black), Fear, and Disgust.

The Inside Out 2 cast also introduces new emotions including Anxiety (Maya Hawke), Envy (Ayo Edebiri), Embarrassment (Paul Walter Hauser), and Ennui (Adle Exarchopoulos). Like all Pixar movies, both Inside Out and its sequel contain references to previous entries in the company's canon, including blink-and-miss-it glimpses of the Pizza Planet truck from the Toy Story universe. However, one particular element that connects the new movie to a previous movie is much more subtle.

‘At Capacity’ Review: Spencer Jamison’s Short Is Romantic Enough To Make You Feel Like The Third Wheel
Image
Those who have grown up through the ‘90s and the 2000s will often bemoan the death of the romantic comedy subgenre for one reason or another. While I sometimes find myself agreeing with the decline in spontaneity and chemistry in movies, I think there’s still a healthy supply of rom-coms that are being made. There’s The Half of It, Thiruchitrambalam, Look Both Ways, Somebody I Used to Know, Red White & Royal Blue, Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Hit Man, Premalu, and the list just goes on. And this is coming from someone who doesn’t actively seek out rom-coms. So, I’m sure if you ask someone who is a fan of this subgenre, you’ll realize that things are pretty good. Well, regardless of what your stance is on the “romantic comedies are dead or not” discourse, I think you should definitely check out the short film,...

This 2024 underrated horror movie is now on Netflix and it deserves all the love
Image
Where are all my horror fans? Netflix recently added 10 horror films to its platform on the first of August. While I recommend checking out each new release, the one that should be at the top of your watchlist is the 2024 supernatural horror film Tarot. This movie is criminally underrated, in my opinion, when it really deserves all the love and attention.

Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg (The Expendables 4) wrote and directed Tarot, making it their feature film directorial debuts. Like most movies nowadays, Tarot is based on another piece of work. It's based on Nicholas Adams' 1992 novel Horrorscope. Although panned by critics, the horror flick still managed to be a box-office success, grossing $49 million worldwide against a budget of $8 million.

Here's how I see it. It's okay to read critic reviews but don't let what someone else has said and their opinions deter you from watching a movie. Who knows,...

Percy Jackson Season 2s Tyson Casting Teases A Major Change From 18-Year-Old Book Twist
Image
At a Sdcc panel, Rick Riordan and the Percy Jackson team revealed that Daniel Diemer will play Tyson in season 2. In the novels, Tyson is a cyclops and Percy's half-brother. Based on Diemer's age, it seems like Tyson will be older than Percy, which marks a big departure from the source material.

During a San Diego Comic-Con panel on Thursday, the team behind Disney+'s Percy Jackson and the Olympians shared some exciting season 2 casting updates, which, by extension, teased a major change from the sophomore outing's source material. Following the success of its first season, which adapted Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief novel to the small screen, Percy Jackson season 2 will tackle Riordan's Sea of Monsters. Percy Jackson's cast of characters will grow alongside the epic story, which made it even more exciting when Riordan shared that Daniel Diemer will play Percy Jackson's Tyson in the second season.

The Best LGBTQ Movies and TV Shows Streaming on Netflix This Pride Month
Image
When LGBTQ community-gathering spaces were largely put on pause by the pandemic, those once-in-person safe havens became our streaming platforms and technical devices at home. Hyper-specific pop subcultures emerged — here’s looking at you, queer readers of the generally awful “Friends” — and reputations for streamers’ philosophies toward and commitment to LGBTQ content were widely discussed online. (Shout out to Showtime: the premium cable network still servicing lesbians everywhere.)

Even as the world has opened back up, in Hollywood, it feels like queer storytelling and community are more galvanized than ever. Nowhere is that more tidily displayed than on the carousels of “LGBTQ” offerings found across entertainment platforms. Netflix, a heavyweight in any streaming conversation (regardless of its rocky 2022), has played a significant role in green-lighting major queer-inclusive projects across television and film. Not only has the platform championed many shows that were queer in premise — see “Grace and Frankie” or...

New Horror Movie Tarot Looks Like A Box Office Bomb – But It Could Be A Sneaky Hit
Image
There has been much pessimism floating around regarding this past weekend's box office. I myself have tossed some of that pessimism into the void. Much of that has to do with the fact that the summer movie season kicked off with "The Fall Guy" opening to a wildly disappointing $28.5 million, marking the worst start to summer in more than 20 years. Far less ink has been spilled regarding Sony's new horror movie "Tarot," which also opened over the weekend and snuck into the top five on the domestic charts with a $6.5 million debut. At first glance, it's not a good look for a movie from a major studio opening on more than 3,100 screens across North America. However, this might actually end up being a sneaky little hit.

"Tarot" also pulled in $3.7 million internationally, giving it a $10.2 million global start. Again, that number isn't going to break any records. It's not...

Tripped Up Stars and Director on Bringing Much-Needed Light and Laughter with New Movie
Image
"This is a strange time to promote a film, considering what's going on in the world," said Shruti Ganguly in our Zoom interview. Ganguly is the director of the new culinary comedy, Tripped Up, which features an almost all-women ensemble cast that includes Leah Lewis, Ariel Winter, Sasha Fox, Ashley Moore, Judy Gold, and Vanessa Williams. "But I think we need more comedies. We need more joy. We need these moments to travel and believe in basic things like friendship."

Tripped Up finds Lizzy (Lewis), a hot-headed and aspiring chef, who accepts an impromptu opportunity to compete at renowned, weekend-long Saucy Food Festival. Frustrated with her restaurant kitchen job and demanding boss (Gold), Lizzy sees the festival as an opportunity to recalibrate and potentially redeem herself (she famously lost a televised cooking competition years before).

Of course, she can't do it alone, so she enlists the help of her friends Kai,...

Madison Beer on the "Therapeutic Happiness" of Writing Her Album "Silence Between Songs"
Image

Madison Beer is more than ready to open up. From the moment I ask a question from inside a karaoke room at a club event for Las Vegas's Jbl Fest, she's prepared to tell the truth. "[I'm someone who was subject to] massive amounts of online hatred and bullying, and to people constantly perceiving and having opinions about me," she tells Popsugar. "That's been very hard at times."

When it comes to the internet, which she calls "f*cking terrifying," she wishes there was more accountability for the kind of cyberbullies that came after her so intensely during the early years of her career. "There should be actual consequences for that. I would love to see something implemented where, actually, no, you can't just hide behind an account and be horrifically mean to people and cost people their lives sometimes. Maybe a system that finds these people and holds them accountable,...

Tripped Up Trailer Delivers the Perfect Recipe for a Female-Led Comedy
Image
A trip with friends, food, and a cooking contest at a festival — what can go wrong? A lot, apparently, according to the first trailer for Tripped Up, the upcoming comedy from Decal starring Elemental's Leah Lewis.

With only four feature films in her filmography, Leah Lewis is already one of Hollywood's next big promises. After conquering teenage audiences in Netflix's queer drama The Half of It, and doing the same with family audiences thanks to Pixar's latest film, the actress stars in Shruti Ganguly's directorial debut.

Tripped Up follows the story of an aspiring chef who travels with her friends to participate in a cooking competition. But what seemed like a calm trip for professional purposes turns into absolute chaos, leading the friends to strengthen their bond despite adversity.

Decal has released the official trailer for the movie, which is coming to theaters on October 20, and...

Madison Beer's Complete Dating History, From Brooklyn Beckham to Nick Austin
Image
Singer Madison Beer has been in the spotlight since she was barely a teenager when Justin Bieber found her YouTube covers and signed her to the same record label as him. But just because she's famous doesn't mean she was able to avoid the messiness of dating as a teenager. We've all been there, but she's had to go through all of it in the public eye. Like most young people, she's had a few relationships, some of which ended because of some pretty serious stuff, while others naturally ended like many relationships do.

In 2020, though, Beer began dating TikToker Nick Austin, and things seem to still be going strong between them. The 24-year-old star has also had a creatively fruitful past few years - she published her memoir "The Half of It" in April 2022, and her second studio album, "Silence Between Songs," drops on Sept. 15. "I am so excited...

10 Best PG-13 Netflix Movies You Need To See
Image
PG-13 films make up a large demographic, and there is a wide array of PG-13 Netflix movies perfect for a binge-fest. The PG-13 rating by the Motion Picture Association is fairly ambiguous in that its rating is set based on what disqualifies the content from being rated PG or rated R. If a movie receives a PG-13 rating, it is deemed to have too much nudity, sexual content, violence, or coarse language to be appropriate for young audiences. However, a PG-13 rating also signals that a movie is not as explicit or graphic as an R-rated feature.

The best Netflix movies aren't just hits from other studios, but also the streaming service's own original content. Some of the best Netflix movies are rated PG-13, as the rating allows for more mature storytelling without completely alienating audiences. The best PG-13 Netflix movies run the gamut of genres, including comedy, action, and mystery.

15 Best High School Movies of All Time, Ranked
Image
When it comes to the best high school movies of all time, the competition is fierce. The sheer amount of top-tier classics isn’t just whelming — ask 10 Things I Hate About You’s Chastity Church — but overwhelming. In the 1970s, films like Grease, which were merely set against the backdrop of high school, kicked off a trend that would reach new heights in the ‘80s: movies about teens that aimed to really capture their high school experiences — both good and bad.

From John Hughes’ genre-shaping classics to the explosion of late ‘90s and early aughts high school movies that centered young women, the coming-of-age films of yesteryear have endured, and, even now, dominate Hollywood. While viewers’ must-see high school movies syllabi may be as all over the place as Clueless character Cher Horowitz’ driving abilities, some films are undeniable hallmarks of the genre.

CAA Signs Writer/Director Sheridan O’Donnell Of ‘Little Brother,’ ‘Rising Phoenix’

Exclusive: Writer and director Sheridan O’Donnell, has signed with CAA for representation.

Born in Texas and raised in New Mexico, O’Donnell is a Korean-American filmmaker based in Los Angeles. As a creator, his work is known for exploring family, identity, and human connection through character-driven narratives that seamlessly balance catharsis and humor.

O’Donnell recently made waves with his directorial debut, Little Brother, which stars Jk Simmons, Daniel Diemer (The Half of It), and Philip Ettinger (First Reformed), and took home the Audience Award at the 2023 Atlanta Film Festival. The film was inspired by his personal experiences with mental health and suicide, and follows Jake (Diemer) as he drives his older brother (Ettinger) across the American West after his most recent suicide attempt. Along the way, the two struggle to reconcile past traumas and forge a new bond.

Elemental Voice Cast Guide: What The Actors Look Like In Real Life
Image
The Elemental cast features an impressive group consisting of newcomers and seasoned veterans playing characters representing the elements of nature for Pixar's 27th feature film. The animated movie tells the touching story of two young anthropomorphic elemental beings — one is fire, and the other is water — who fall in love despite the prejudices that exist between their people (and obvious practical barriers that come with being made out of fire and water). Like many of the studio's crowning achievements, Pixar's Elemental features a simple plot that is counterbalanced by the studio's amazing storytelling craft and unique visual language.

The unique plot and premise of Elemental is all supplemented by a stellar ensemble of voice talent. Though the cast of Elemental doesn't necessarily jump off the page as a roster of A-list names, many of the actors involved in the movie are experts at their craft and have lent their...

Elemental's Ember Lumen Is Similar to Another Leah Lewis Character
Image
Pixar's latest animated feature Elemental introduces the character Ember Lumen -- a fire elemental with an equally fiery attitude. Although a hot-tempered persona naturally fits with a character of this kind (specifically someone made of fire), the movie's director Peter Sohn was able to create a balance with Ember's personality, allowing her character to not only be prone to explosive outbursts but to have an innate sincerity and reliability. It made her a character that may initially come off as unlikable at first, but through personal growth, she can get audiences to change their mind and root for her. And this was all due to the voice actor Leah Lewis and her character in The Half of It.

Sohn had chosen Lewis specifically to voice the character of Ember because of her performance in the 2020 Netflix original movie. In an interview with Polygon, Sohn said, "She performed on all...

The 25 Best LGBTQ Movies on Netflix Right Now
Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal in Secreto en la montaña (2005)
While Hollywood still has a long way to go in supporting queer stories and storytellers, we’re living in a relative golden age of LGBTQ cinema compared to what has come before. Netflix has not always chosen to support the LGBTQ community in their business decisions, but the streamer has played a major role in increasing the visibility of queer characters and storylines in both film and TV, and in supporting queer creators in telling stories.

As we celebrate Pride month and beyond, let’s take a look at some of the best LGBTQ movies Netflix currently has on offer. If you’re looking for a queer film to watch—satirically funny or devastatingly earnest, heart-stoppingly romantic or casually queer—try one of the many excellent and diverse options below.

Elemental Review
Image
When exactly did this happen? When did Pixar lose its mojo?

Once upon a time in Hollywood, the studio name became synonymous with quality. Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Finding Nemo — these titles became box office juggernauts and won wide respect as some of the most innovative and beloved movies of all time. The films continued the legacy begun by Walt Disney with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs of making mass-market family entertainment with real artistry, and the creative minds at Pixar — the “Brain Trust” as they became known — seemed capable of anything. Disney, after the company bought Pixar outright in 2006, also tapped the Brain Trust to retool movies outside the Pixar banner in both live-action (Tron: Legacy) and animation (Wreck-It Ralph).

How then, could the studio that seemed incapable of making anything less than awesome, become so mediocre?

Take Pixar’s latest outing, Elemental. Like Pixar at its best,...

Exclusive: The Cast and Crew of Elemental on Crafting an Immigrant Story for the Pixar Legacy
Image
Leah Lewis, sitting in her interview chair on the Pixar studio lot and dressed in a head-to-toe hot pink suit, has all the presence of a movie star.

Lewis, the stunning actress known for her roles in the TV series Nancy Drew and the Netflix romance The Half of It, becomes a bona fide star in Elemental, which, in all likelihood, will prove just another step in ascension of the Hollywood ladder. Born in Shanghai, Lewis immigrated to the US at just eight months old and grew up in Florida.

Lewis isn’t alone. Mamoudou Athie, Lewis’ Yale-educated, Emmy-nominated co-star in Elemental, also has a career on the rise. At age 34, he already boasts a sizable resume in television and film, including roles in The Front Runner, Cake, and Jurassic World: Dominion. Athie came to the US as a refugee from Mauritania at six months old. His family raised him in New Carrollton,...

Box office preview: ‘The Flash,’ ‘Elemental,’ ‘The Blackening’ will keep the summer movie love going
Image
After strong releases to kick off the month of June, three more wide releases will try to split up any potential business to give the summer box office a boost. This weekend should also benefit from Father’s Day on Sunday and the Juneteenth government holiday on Monday. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

The widest release of the weekend is Warner Bros’ “The Flash,” starring Ezra Miller and more, which ties some of Zack Snyder‘s Dceu movies into the upcoming plans by James Gunn, or so it’s been said. The movie has been plagued with problems almost going back to Miller’s casting for Snyder’s “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” in 2016, which includes various writers and directors coming on board and then leaving. The movie was also delayed a few times due to Covid, and then last year, Miller (who uses they...

The beloved animation studio Pixar has revealed a new look at their upcoming rom-com drama, Elemental, courtesy of a stunning 4Dx poster. Madison Beer Tuned Out the Noise to Make Her Album ‘Silence Between Songs’
Image
Madison Beer sleeps best with the TV on at night. She needs things to be noisy enough that she doesn’t have the space to think. “I don’t like to be in the quiet,” she says. But with her new album, Silence Between Songs, out Sept. 15, Beer chose to do the opposite and really listen to herself.

“Those moments in between the noise is when you’re able to reflect,” she says. “I was able to look at things with a better perspective. That’s where these records came from.

Why Ted Lasso's Mom, Dottie, Looks So Familiar
Image
In episode 11 of "Ted Lasso"'s third season, Ted (Jason Sudeikis) is surprised by a special house guest: his mom, Dottie Lasso. She appears totally unannounced in London and shadows her son throughout his day working at AFC Richmond. Eventually, the pair work out some of their long-standing issues, especially those around Ted's dad's death.

If you're an avid TV watcher, you might wonder where you recognize the actor who plays Ted's mom - Becky Ann Baker - from. The answer is a lot of places, since Becky Ann is an extremely prolific character actor. Two of her biggest roles were as Jean Weir on NBC's short-lived (but extremely beloved) teen comedy "Freaks and Geeks" and as Loreen Horvath - the mom to Lena Dunham's Hannah - on HBO's "Girls." She received an Emmy nomination in 2017 for her role on "Girls." But the 70-year-old actor has had smaller...
