An English Haunting is a decent film. It is spooky. Well acted, sort of, not bad. The settings were nice. There is even a creepy old guy. Nice little twist towards the end. Like I said, not bad

First of all I'd like to say that I am not at all a horror movie fan. 99% of them are tedious, trope-ridden, vulgar garbage with zero creativitiy and imagination. Another commonality is that they start out somewhat okay but then totally go off the rails in the second half. Anyway, I was intrigued by the trailer of An English Hauting, the setting mostly. But since trailers have a habit of misleading you to think the movie is awesome, when in fact it's the opposite, I didn't expect much. Perhaps that is why I wasn't completely disappointed. By horror film standards I didn't find it that bad. It's a bit more subtle and refined than the typical in-your-face trash from Hollywood. Nothing you haven't seen before though. It did seem like a bit of a knock-off of "The Living and the Dead (2006)" in some aspects. Which I would recommend you rather watch instead. That was actually some decent horror.

It actually wasn't SO terrible until they have this like 30 yrold guy getting pushed around by an old lady and crying for his mommy? Like... wtf? If he was a 12 year old kid it would have been better. It just didn't make sense. Also did anyone notice his hand wasn't injured in the end after she cut it? Ugh It just must have been so embarrassing for this actor. I was embarrassed watching it

Oh my goodness!
Ok they did get use of a huge quaint English country house. That must've been due to the producers being lord and lady what's name.
Acting is so dire it's just painful. The script is awful dialogue is completely unnatural. Special effects are cheap and they look it. Photography is good though. Music is OK. Going for an old Hammer vibe. But the story is just stupid and everything is held together so flimsily that it just makes one big messy tangled laugh out loud snooze fest.
I am normally very happy to support indies. Love low Budget and can cope with multiple gaffs and budget restraints, I can see past all that but there is a line and this is way over it.
Too many stupidities and plot errors to make it even faintly believable, and just too much crappy acting. I just lost interest about half way and caught the little twist at the end which was way too little too late.
Sorry. Not for me.
Avoid.

Imagine the village of Little Snoring's amateur dramatic society had a whip-round and raised £500 to make their own movie. This is the result.

I truly don't get the 1 star reviews of this movie. The acting wasn't great but it wasn't that bad. I especially love the one guys review who says he turned off the movie due to some mistake with a cigarette. Delusional.
That being said this movie is pretty cliched. You'll see the ending from a mile away once you figure out what is going on. Regardless, the cinematography was nice, acting was passable. Worth a watch if you are really into horror.

I would've given the first half of the movie 5-6 stars as it was written, directed and acted to at least that level and for a low budget movie I was feeling quite pleased that I gave it a shot, but then the second half of the movie, OMG, what happened? It just descended into absolute crap - I need someone to explain it to me

Surprisingly good. You can't beat a British ghost story. No information on where the house actually is so did some research of my own. I noticed that the Associate Producers of the film are Sir John and Lady Shuckburgh. A search reveals that it was filmed at the Shuckburgh Country House near Little Shuckburgh in Warwickshire. I hope that this is of interest to you all!

Blake (David Lenik) and his alcoholic mother Margot (Tessa Wood) are forced to move into the mysterious Clemonte Hall, a vast isolated manor house, to care for his dying Grandfather, Aubrey (Barrington De La Roche) who resides in the attic room. Soon, ghostly goings-on fill the house with dread, as it becomes apparent Audrey's illness may have a supernatural cause.
An English Haunting was enjoyable and I imagine will be popular amongst a more mainstream audience looking for a classical approach to horror.
The location and cinematography are stunning and whilst the blurb states it is set in the 1960's - the film has a distinctly timeless feel to it. The film is well paced and both the story and each of the characters follow distinctive arcs. As a writer and reviewer, my biggest bugbear is poorly written characters. I am always going to champion a film that has believable characters brought to life by strong performances from the cast. Take Margot, who is resentful of reprising her role as her fathers carer due to their previously tumultuous relationship. It is a believable contrast to Blake whose loyalties are torn in several directions.
As the story unfolds, we are shown glimpses of a grotesque human-like monster on and Aubrey's involvement in its origins. In a subversive take on the feminine Gothic archetype - An English Haunting has us explore relationships between mother and son. Leading to a plot twist that was a genuine surprise. My only criticism was the portrayal of the three kings purely because I felt they did not contribute to the suspense of the film.
Audiences may be divided on An English Haunting. Genre audiences generally enjoy using their imagination - whilst mainstream audiences tend to expect all nuances to be made obvious for easier enjoyment.

A woman who appears to have just walked out of the 1990s has an adult son who is ostensibly normal who dresses like it's 1936, and the grandpa dying of dementia looks like he was in a 1980s hair metal band. The background music is repetitive and reminds me of a video game. I had to Google to find out this was supposed to be the 1960s. Could have fooled me.
This movie is not the worst haunted house film I've ever watched, but it's not really good. It's very uneven drifting between parts that are mysterious or disturbing to things that seem utterly implausible i.e. The nurse wandering on the moors for like a month? HOW? WHY?
I'm only left to conclude that this was a terrible inaccurate work of fan fiction.

Interesting premise and a couple of good scares but the two leads are appalling; terrible, camp acting and they come across as so insufferable that the film was a chore. Also, I'm not buying the high reviews here - seems that these have been bought and those who have given it a rightfully low score are being marked down by others. Incredibly suspect...

Awful in every way a movie could be awful. Rubbish acting, special effects, make-up the whole thing is horrendous. Save yourself the misery of watching it. Even whilst self isolating due to Covid 19 I'd still rather stare at the wall than watch more movies like this...

A truly awful movie. Bad script and bad acting should make this film a total waste of time. Except...
1) It's really quite amusing. I'm sure the filmmakers never intended this, but it's so bad it's pretty good. The Three Kings stood out in this context. They were as frightening as The Three Stooges and just made me titter instead of quiver. They give evil a bad rep.
2) The camerawork wasn't too bad.
3) I watched it for free on Amazon Prime. If I'd paid for this I'd be angry. Angrier than The Three Kings (which isn't saying much).

Really. This movie had so much promise. Then the climax hit. It's almost like the writers gave up half way through. The actors gave up right at the same time as well. It's bizarre what a 180° turn this movie made half way through to become a piece of crap.

I saw this movie and I actually like the film. The color grading picture is perfect. The script is interesting. Acting is good, not bad. The only thing that I dont like about the film is the sound effects. The sound effects sound bad and cheap which kinda ruins the film a little bit. Overall this is actually pretty watchable.

I thought this was beautifully shot, had an excellent score and the acting was decent.
I didn't find it slow in the slightest, a wonderful atmosphere was built up from the start, and the house really added to the atmosphere.
The budgetary constraints were only obvious on a couple of occasions, some effect had been added and it really showed it was shot on video on my TV.
Overall though an excellent haunted house film, and one I'll certainly watch again, it held my attention throughout.

Nice settings and that's about it. Slow and boring, nothing interesting or spooky going on. Lame effects.
I just watched 30 min or so and I had enough.

This movie was poorly written and performed. The slowness I tolerated but there were too many nonsensical parts that went nowhere. I saw no horror in this film. Just an annoying barrage of attempts to be scary. You failed.
