I have to start by saying that I don't agree with any of the reviews so far. I don't think it's meh nor am I blown away.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, it makes you think about yourself and your own life. After all, what is love to you? I'm sure you could identify some scenes as romantic or caring and others not really. Either way it's impossible to be indifferent to it.
The animation is good but for a short animated movie that relies enterely on visuals to get across their message, it could be better.
Overall, a good animated short that may even win best animated short oscar.

It would be fine for a art gallery, for a exposition about love, but...even if I loved the animation style, this doesn't have a lot to say and it isn't Oscars material.
This is basically just a thought piece. It's like the creators brain tipped into a screen. On top of that it looks amazing. The shots, wow. Some of them are just perfect.
Literally writing this I'm just realising how much I actually loved it. Some of the scenes keep playing in my head, making me think and I think that is what makes a good film.

Whilst working his way through an entire pack of cigarettes, a man sits at a corner table in a café and ponders "what is love?". What follows is a series of romantic (and not so) scenarios in which people spend time together, search online for their ideal partner, imagine what life might be like were things different - and all augmented by the general chatter and conversation taking place around him. Some of that chatter is quite profound, some of it - well let's just say there's plenty of hot air in there, too - though that's not restricted to the physical venue: there's plenty of vacuous phone chat included too. There's one quite poignant scene featuring a text conversation that sees a semblance of commitment met with dots, then not. More dots then not, then a read receipt - LOL!! Is the grass always greener or might true love actually exist for any of those seeking it? Are they truly seeking it anyway? The animation styles alter a little from time to time and that adds a richness to this quite interesting look at what makes us tick, emotionally and sexually - and it's not always pleasing or enduring what emerges from our dalliances with "love".
What is love? The central question of the film gets answered in the most unconventional ways possible, stretching our ideas of love beyond what films usually show. Instead of the typical exploration of connection, The Windshield Wiper's idea of love is in its antithesis - the denial or absence of connection. From thwarted internet matches to longings for people long gone, the seemingly unrelated vignettes visually emphasise the concept of love by portraying everything corollary to it. Love is defined as a yearning, an aftertaste, an end, an instability and more. The animation in this short is gorgeous and all the colourful distortions highlight all the heightened emotions of the experience of love.
