100 Vaginas

One woman's journey of discovery while photographing 100 different vaginas, including her own. The women in this documentary give a very honest, forthright and down to earth view of how they feel about their own sexuality and bodies. The range of topics covered is amazing, with no holds barred. If you're looking for a cheap thrill, forget it, but well worth a look if you can handle the truth.

Dumb TV from a woman who calls herself an artist, taking photo's of a vagina is not art. If so, Penthouse, Escort, Hustler etc are therefore rampant with artists. Promptly followed by women talking about how people perceive masturbation as shameful, perhaps in the 19th century but this is the 21st, so also incorrect. To sum it up in a nutshell, just feminists showing their pussies, talking about periods and saying naughty words, yawn. Everbody else couldn't give a toss.

At the time of this review three others had already reviewed this provocative and inspiring documentary about women. I don't know if the other three reviewers were women, but they gave reviews of a 7, a 6 and a 5. The 5 labeled the film as Dull. I am a man and a lover/supporter of women. I very much appreciated the courage of the producer/director protagonist who deeply touched my soul with these narratives that cut across ages, races and ethnicities. This was a story that has waited all too long to be told. One reviewer labeled it a feminist film. Perhaps in some ways it is, but let's call it as it really is! It is a film about the culture of people who represent over half of the worlds population. It is human drama that is true but rarely discussed. It is there to enlighten and make humanity something much better. Never mind being appalled by the nude pictures and closeups. This film was made to lift you up to a mountain level to cast an eye on OUR humanity (men included!).

This is basically a compilation of talk therapy tales from and for emotionally disturbed by the concept of being female. Being female is not something you need to fear, dread or loathe. Yet I suppose if you like who you are you wouldn't need therapy. Dpn't bother watching, just like yourself.

I thought this was a great film, giving an insight into the experiences of other people. A lot of identity is tied to the vagina and vulva, much more than just shame.and sex. Those are also there of course, but it goes much deeper.

When I put it on from an artfilm platform (Kanopy), I was a little worried it might be raunchy or purposefully provocative. Which can be interesting, sure, but I was quite glad to find that 100 Vaginas is really just a documentary showing a part of the female body that has a lot (ok, easily the most) cultural and personal significance to it.

I cringed at the section on female genital mutilation, but not out of disgust of womanhood, but rather at the unwanted destruction of a healthy body. It was still worth watching, because if you don't get exposed to such a thing, you can easily ignore it. I am glad for having learned a lot, and for gaining some additional compassion.
