An exploration into drama as a therapeutic educational tool, rippling positivity and hope into families, friends and communities. George Kon as the kapuna teacher continues to enliven and enlighten all those in his path and polish the diamonds of humanity. Wonderful to see T-Shirt Theater showcased and hopefully inspire other programs throughout the globe
KIPUKA represents the anti-bullying efforts of students from an inner city school on Oahu, Hawaii. How fortunate they are to use theatre as a venue for revealing and coping with life-threatening issues of intimidation, self-doubt and even suicide. I highly recommend this production to all ages, but especially to our youth at risk.

Under the guidance of George Kon and Jonah Moananu, this documentary shares the powerful stories told by these students and how much of a positive influence it has on them and others within the community. It intertwines the process of community building, gaining a better understanding of themselves, and shows the impact that students can have on each other. A couple of years ago, I had the privilege of being a part of this film. I had the opportunity to join a collective team of creatives directed by Jeremiah Tayao to capture and share the amazing work and stories of T-Shirt Theatre. After watching the film premiere at HIFF in 2018, my sights were forever changed. Super grateful for the opportunity and how it sparked the creative flame of mine. Watch and share this film and continue to support T-Shirt Theatre and help them inspire others!
"Kipuka" is a rousing and absorbing documentary about students from Farrington High School in Kalihi, Oahu who are members of T-Shirt Theatre. The project, directed by George Kon, Jonah Moanamu and Primo Asis, allows students to write and perform short skits based on their own experiences with bullying and cyber bullying. The dramatic and comedic skits explore theater as a safe space to show how self worth and gender identity is threatened by bullying, leading to isolation, depression, self-harm and suicide. The valuable lessons and support gained by the teens in group theater promote individual and team confidence, kindness and leadership, extending. to the community.
We need this program in every school!
I was fortunate to see this show live. Honestly, this documentary is even more powerful because of the clips they have added. Imagine! Every vignette has been written and directed by a student or group of students. They are opening their hearts to each other and to you. Please watch and share this movie widely, it could save a life.
