19 Years Later, This Cult Classic Cyberpunk Anime Series Is Finally Getting a Kick-Ass Steelbook Release
Image
Anime is an ever-growing entertainment medium that will be around for a long time. It wasn't always like that, though, and when Japanese art was establishing itself in the Western side of the world back in the late 90s and early aughts, several niche titles ended up forgotten as the years passed. One of those titles is Ergo Proxy, a 2006 series that mixed a cyberpunk setting with philosophical elements, the same way that masterpieces like Blade Runner did. If you missed it or ever felt like owning it, you will be glad to know that Mvm announced this week that the cult classic is getting a Collector's Blu-ray Steelbook on September 29.

Ergo Proxy is set in a post-apocalyptic world in which humanity lives in domed cities due to the outside world becoming inhospitable after an ecological disaster. In that scenario, humans and androids coexist in a new system that utilizes robots for various purposes.

Stranger Things Anime Reportedly in Production
Image
Fans of the hit Netflix series Stranger Things have been eagerly anticipating the release of the fifth season, which was announced in early 2022. While there has been no official release date for Stranger Things season 5 announced yet, rumors have been swirling about what fans can expect next from the series. One of the most exciting rumors that has circulated is that a Stranger Things anime is in production.

According to the website What's On Netflix which tracks the development and release of shows on Netflix, the anime will be a spin-off of the original Stranger Things series and will take place in the same universe. The report says that the plot will follow two brothers in 1980s Tokyo who encounter the Upside Down. It is possible that the anime will delve deeper into the origins of the Upside Down. As exciting as this development will sound to many though, it's...

Netflix Plans More Anime Content, Strikes Deals With 4 Producers In Japan, Korea
Image
Netflix is aiming to grow its production of anime content by signing four deals with creators in Japan and Korea.

The producers are Japan’s Naz, Science Saru, Mappa, and Korea’s Studio Mir, and take the streamer’s total content deals in the two territories to nine. Each deal is a non-exclusive production line partnership. Netflix says its aim is “to create the best content for the global anime community”.

To date, the service’s original anime productions under the existing partnerships include Altered Carbon: Resleeved (Anima), Ghost in the Shell SAC_2045 (Production I.G), and Dragon’s Dogma (Sublimation).

Upcoming in 2021 and beyond are Spriggan (David Production), Vampire In The Garden, (Wit Studio – a group company under Production I.G), and Super Crooks (Bones).

“In just four years, we’ve built a dedicated team based in Tokyo that serves to entertain the global anime community through new and aspirational storytelling.

Altered Carbon Canceled, No Season 3 at Netflix
Joel Kinnaman in Altered Carbon (2018)
No resleeves this time – we must bid adieu to Netflix’s Altered Carbon. Actually, it was time to bid adieu to Altered Carbon months ago. According to reports, the streaming service called time on the pricey sci-fi drama series all the way back in April, but news of the show’s cancellation didn’t reach any of us until now, for reasons best known to Netflix.

Unlike Netflix’s recent choice to drop sophomore seasons of both The Society and I Am Not Ok With This, the decision not to pursue a potential third season of Laeta Kalogridis’ cyberpunk adaptation had nothing to do with pandemic logistics, Deadline confirms. It was just a standard case of ye olde “viewership vs. cost renewal review process” for Altered Carbon, which is arguably less comforting for fans of the series.

Having originally optioned Richard K. Morgan’s bestselling 2002 novel of the same name,...

"Altered Carbon" - No Body Lives Forever
The live-action science fiction TV series "Altered Carbon", based on the 2002 'cyberpunk' novel by Brit writer Richard K. Morgana, set in a future where interstellar travel is facilitated by transferring consciousnesses between bodies, has been canceled after two seasons on Netflix:

"...In the future, humans have achieved virtual immortality. Most people have 'cortical stacks' in their spinal columns that store their consciousness. If their body dies, their stack can be stored indefinitely. Their stacks can be downloaded into new bodies, or 'sleeves', after death..."

"Altered Carbon: Resleeved", is the Japanese 'anime' feature, directed by Jō Nakajima, spinning-off from the Netflix live-action series.

Altered Carbon: Resleeved (2020)
Altered Carbon: Resleeved Ending Explained
Altered Carbon: Resleeved (2020)
This article contains spoilers for Altered Carbon: Resleeved.

At first glance, Altered Carbon: Resleeved would appear to have a fairly pat ending. The villain is dead, and everyone goes their own way. It’s an uncharacteristically hopeful conclusion for this normally dark cyberpunk story, aside from the fact that Hideki Tanaseda, the latest Meth to compel services from Takeshi Kovacs, is not quite finished with the last Envoy. But even that leaves open the possibility for more animated action in this universe, whether it’s with the same secondary characters or not.

Altered Carbon: Resleeved Review
Altered Carbon: Resleeved (2020)
This review contains spoilers for Altered Carbon: Resleeved.

Is Altered Carbon: Resleeved an anime in an Altered Carbon sleeve or Altered Carbon in an anime sleeve? On the one hand, this animated tale incorporates plenty of elements we’ve come to recognize in a story involving the last Envoy, Takeshi Kovacs, including digital consciousnesses, hotel AIs, and even some underlying backstory involving Kovacs’ long lost sister, Rei. On the other hand, the organized crime story involving a Yakuza boss and rituals of succession, honor codes, and sword battles dives deep into the Japanese origins of the story form and appeals to a distinctly different audience.

It works on one level because Takeshi Kovacs is himself of Japanese origin, a fact that has been downplayed by the Joel Kinnaman and Anthony Mackie incarnations of the character but corrected here in this movie with an Asian sleeve, and it’s not as...

‘Altered Carbon: Resleeved’ Trailer Channels ‘Yakuza’ and ‘Ghost in the Shell’
Joel Kinnaman in Altered Carbon (2018)
Netflix's live-action adaptation of Richard K. Morgan's Altered Carbon novels has enjoyed two seasons so far, but an upcoming anime adaptation will push the futuristic storytelling even more. Altered Carbon: Resleeved will be a one-off feature set in the same universe and is set to explore new elements of the story mythology. So while I expected to see lots of of Ghost in the Shell nods (and not just because co-writer Dai Satô is on board the project), what I did not expect was for this story to focus on what seems to be a …...

‘Altered Carbon: Resleeved’ Trailer: Netflix Loves Their CG-Animated Anime Spin-Offs
Príncipe de los dragones (2018)
Netflix seems to have a fixation — nay, an addiction — to CG-animated animes. And I’m begging you, please stop. We tolerated it for The Dragon Prince, which delivered a captivating story despite its unusual animation style, and we suffered through the Godzilla animes. We’re ignoring the Pokémon movie remake. But now Netflix is giving Altered Carbon, a sci-fi series […]

Altered Carbon: Resleeved Trailer: Netflix Series Gets an Anime Spinoff Movie
Altered Carbon: Resleeved (2020)
Netflix has revealed a new trailer for Altered Carbon: Resleeved. This is the latest anime offering from the streaming service, and one that is expanding upon one of its biggest hits. Altered Carbon season 2 recently arrived and, luckily, Netflix isn't waiting all that long to bring us back to that world, albeit in a very different way, as this animated movie looks both right at home in this universe. At the same time, it looks to be a wildly different way to bring the world of Richard K. Morgan to life.

The trailer kicks off with some voiceover that helps set up the rules of this universe. In the future, mankind is no longer limited to the time they are given with a single body. Their consciousness is preserved and can transfer to a new body, or "sleeve." Hence, the title. We then see a girl names Holly who is tangled up in a bloody,...

Everything Coming to Netflix in March
Matthew McConaughey at an event for El niño y el fugitivo (2012)
Netflix is adding a robust line-up of popular programs to its slate in March.

In addition to rom-coms like Matthew Mcconaughey’s “Ghosts of Girlfriend’s Past,” “He’s Just Not That Into You” and “Always a Bridesmaid,” the streamer is also adding a few classics like “Goodfellas” and “The Shawshank Redemption” starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins. The latter film also serves as an analogy for actor Macaulay Culkin’s journey to freedom, according to his Esquire interview.

Original Netflix shows coming to the platform next month include “Lost Girls,” “Crip Camp” and Season 3 of “Elite.” Based on a true story, “Lost Girls” follows a mother who, in her desperate search to find her missing daughter, helps to uncover a string of unsolved murders. Amy Ryan, Gabriel Byrne and Thomasin Mckenzie make up the cast.

“Elite” follows three working-class teens who enroll in an exclusive Spanish private school. But once they arrive,...

Castlevania (2017)
Netflix Is Adding Tons Of Great Horror Movies And TV Shows In March
Castlevania (2017)
With February 29th fast approaching – this is a Leap Year, remember – Netflix is preparing to roll out a fresh helping of new content for March 2020.

It’s a familiar combination of original series, time-honored classics and beloved franchise films, with next month set to herald the arrival of Resident Evil: Apocalypse and its undead sequel, Extinction. Sure, it’s a far cry from the quality and craft of The Lord of the Rings – speaking of which, both the Twin Towers and The Return of the King will be departing Netflix in four weeks’ time – but the saga of Alice still carved out an audience to call its own.

Also peppered throughout Netflix’s March 2020 catalog are some big-name horror titles and edge-of-your-seat thrillers, including Signs and the third season of Ozark. And then there’s the third season of Castlevania, which, it’s fair to say, has been a long time coming.

New on Netflix: March 2020 Releases
Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter in El cadáver de la novia (2005)
Alec Bojalad Feb 19, 2020

Here's what's new on Netflix in March 2020! We've got a complete list of what's leaving, too.

Normally the big story for each month of Netflix new releases are the exciting batch of Netflix original series and movies arriving. For Netflix's new releases for March 2020, things are a little bit different. Yes, there are some cool originals here but...look at those movies!

March 1 sees the arrival of Corpse Bride, The Shawshank Redemption, There Will Be Blood, and Goodfellas! Martin Scorsese likely can't unilaterally decide when and where his movies stream, but it is a happy coincidence that Goodfellas will now exist alongside The Irishman.

As for those Netflix originals...Ozark is the biggest returning hit in March. The story of a very corrupt family airs its third season on March 27. Also of note are Castlevania season 3 (March 5), Altered Carbon: Resleeved (March 19). But really after Goodfellas, nothing else was really necessary.
