Be Careful What You Wish For: 20 Adaptations of ‘The Monkey’s Paw’
Image
The phrase of “be careful what you wish for” is associated with W. W. Jacobs’ “The Monkey’s Paw,” yet it doesn’t actually appear anywhere in the 1902 short story. The closest semblance is the line, “If you must wish, wish for something sensible.” That said, the more ubiquitous statement emphasizes the risk of tempting fate.

This one punishing lesson in resisting greed, taking responsibility, and exerting self-control has gone on to spawn numerous adaptations, both faithful and loose. From film to television, W. W. Jacobs’ cautionary tale has touched just about every form of entertainment since its birth.

And if the classic “The Monkey’s Paw” wasn’t enough to stop the allure of wish fulfillment, then perhaps these twenty other stories might do the trick.

The actor Tony Todd has died, aged 69, after many years of illness, it was announced today. Widely admired for his versatility yet often cast for his deep, resonant voice, he was a popular member of the genre community who enjoyed attending events and meeting fans.

Perhaps most widely known for his iconic performance in Candyman, Todd appeared in numerous horror films, including the Final Destination series, Wishmaster, Hatchet, The Crow, Hell Fest and The Final Wish. He also made an impression in more mainstream far, however, such as Platoon, Le Secret and The Rock.

On the small screen, he endeared himself to fans as Klingon character Kurn in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, as well as making appearances in Scooby-Doo and Xena: Warrior Princess. His voice work included being the...

Bloody Mary: Origins coming from Final Destination writer Jeffrey Reddick
Image
Final Destination 6 is aiming for a 2025 theatrical release (IMAX screens included) – and next year we might also get a new movie from original Final Destination screenwriter Jeffrey Reddick, as Deadline reports that Reddick is teaming up with Convoke Media, Vast Entertainment, DreamPunk Entertainment, and Emmy-winning director Lane Shefter Bishop (The Venice Murders) to get a film called Bloody Mary: Origins into production.

Based on the novel Mary: The Summoning by Hillary Monahan, Bloody Mary: Origins was scripted by Reddick and John Stancari – who, sadly, passed away in 2018 after a long battle with cancer. This is Stancari’s first produced film and will be dedicated to his memory. The story follows a group of teenage girls who discover an ancient spell that conjures the real Bloody Mary. When the terrifying entity pulls one of the girls through the mirror, she becomes trapped in the past, living out the real Mary Worth’s last days.

Eyes in the Trees: Anthony Hopkins to star in The Island of Dr. Moreau reimagining
Image
The 1996 version of The Island of Dr. Moreau, which was directed by John Frankenheimer (who replaced Richard Stanley after half a week of filming), is a well-known disaster, but that was just one of many cinematic adaptations H.G. Wells’ 1896 novel has received over the years. That novel has inspired the 1932 classic Island of Lost Souls, 1959’s Terror Is a Man, 1972’s The Twilight People, a 1977 film that actually kept the The Island of Dr. Moreau title, the Full Moon production Dr. Moreau’s House of Pain, and more. Now we can add another title to the list, as Deadline reports that Academy Award winner Anthony Hopkins has signed on to star in the The Island of Dr. Moreau reimagining Eyes in the Trees.

Timothy Woodward Jr., who most recently directed the horror comedy Til Death Do Us Part, will be directing Eyes in the Trees from a screenplay by...

Final Destination Creator Hopes To See More Characters Survive as the Franchise Expands
Image
Final Destination franchise creator Jeffrey Reddick wants to see more survivors in the films, as he believes the idea of everyone dying in the end is too cynical and uninteresting. Reddick draws inspiration from his own mother's prolonged life to show that while you can't cheat death, you can extend your time through strength and resilience. Final Destination 6 is confirmed, but it's unclear if the filmmakers will take Reddick's advice.

Although death is alluded to in its films' titles, Final Destination franchise creator Jeffrey Reddick says he wishes the movies featured a little more living. In a recent interview, Reddick, who co-wrote the first film's screenplay alongside director James Wong and Glen Morgan (based on an original story by Reddick) shared that he'd love to see more survivors as the franchise moves forward. Each Final Destination film follows a group of people who do their very best to cheat death.

Til Death Do Us Part Director Breaks Down Violent Deaths in New Movie
Image
Not every romance ends happily ever after. Picture it. It's the day of the wedding. The groom looks dashing. The best man is fussing over his speech. Friends have gathered at the church. And, after checking herself out in the mirror, the bride-to-be bails on her big day. She has decided to leave her mysterious life behind. Easier said than done. On behalf of the ex-fiancé, the seven groomsmen set out to change her mind. However, these aren't your ordinary buddies but a cadre of highly-skilled elite mercenaries. And everyone's mutual employer, the enigmatic Dean, has one outstanding rule: Under no circumstances will anyone ever leave the profession alive. As Til Death Do Us Part's trailer teases, things quickly spiral out of control. But if they think this scrappy bride is going down without a fight, they are dead wrong.

Director Timothy Woodward Jr. [The Call] recently spoke to Cbr about the movie's gender-bending premise,...

‘Til Death Do Us Part’ Review
Image
Stars: Cam Gigandet, Natalie Burn, Ser’Darius Blain, Jason Patric, Nicole Arlyn, Orlando Jones, Pancho Moler, D.Y. Sao | Written by Chad Law, Shane Dax Taylor | Directed by Timothy Woodward Jr.

As Til Death Do Us Part opens The Best Man sits in a pew working on his speech as upbeat music plays in the background. That’s followed by similar glimpses of other wedding party members prepping for the ceremony. A flashback to The Bride and Groom, nobody in this film has a name, on vacation serves to reinforce the happy image.

But Til Death Do Us Part isn’t a Hallmark Channel rom-com or Lifetime Channel thriller. Because when The Bride gets cold feet and bails on the wedding, we find out everyone involved in the ceremony is a highly skilled assassin. Now the stood-up Groom wants more than just his ring back, and their employer doesn’t take resignations well.

‘Don’t Look Back’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: Kourtney Bell, Will Stout, Skyler Hart, Jeffrey Holm, Jaqueline Fleming, Amanda Grace Benitez, Damon Lipari, Han Soto, Dean J. West, Stephen Twardokus | Written and Directed by Jeffrey Reddick

[Note: With the film now released in the UK, here’s a reposting of our review of Don’t Look Back from its screening at Frightfest last year]

Writer/director Jeffrey Reddick has a lot of form when it comes to supernatural horror. Not only did he create the long-running Final Destination franchise but he’s also behind the likes of underrated and under-seen supernatural slasher Tamara, Dead Awake and the more recent The Final Wish. All films that play with the idea of the dead returning for revenge on the living in one form or another. And Don’t Look Back is no different.

Don’t Look Back tells the story of Caitlin Kramer, a young woman trying to overcome her traumatic past who, whilst walking through the park one day, sees a man brutally assaulted. However no one intervenes to stop the attack. Instead they all start...

‘The Final Wish’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Michael Welch, Lin Shaye, Tony Todd, Melissa Bolona, Spenser Locke, Kaiwi Lyman, Jonathan Daniel Brown, Jean Elie, Christopher Murray, Douglas Tait, Larry Poole | Written by Jeffrey Reddick, William Halfon, Jonathan Doyle | Directed by Timothy Woodward Jr.

Pretty much my whole reason for giving The Final Wish a watch was because Lin Shaye stars in it. She is a seal of approval for me and I know that even if the movie disappoints, then I will at least see a good performance from the veteran actress. That said, this also features Tony Todd, another reliable horror icon and had some decent-looking poster artwork, so it had at least a few things going for it.

The Final Wish has a simple concept. After his Dad dies, a man (Michael Welch) heads back to the place he grew up to see his Mum (Shaye). While he is there he discovers a mysterious...

Lin Shaye, Tony Todd, Michael Welch, and Spencer Locke in La casa de los demonios (2018)
The Final Wish review – curse of the cliche puts paid to haunted-vase tale
Lin Shaye, Tony Todd, Michael Welch, and Spencer Locke in La casa de los demonios (2018)
Muddled and unimaginative plotting leaves this 90s-style low-budget chiller as a disappointing missed opportunity

The Final Wish could be the last straw. It’s another example of dumb horror: derivative, factory-product, unscary movie-making that jumbles up a bunch of secondhand tropes without any real storytelling discipline, although there is a decent, professional performance here from Lin Shaye as an ageing woman haunted by her past.

Aaron (Michael Welch), a young guy whose life is going nowhere and who thinks of himself as a failure, has to return to his home town on hearing that his dad has died. There is an uneasy reunion with his troubled mother, Kate (Shaye), local girl Lisa (Melissa Bolona) with whom he is still poignantly in love, and a number of school friends and school enemies. But his late father, an antiques dealer, had in his possession a mysterious urn that can grant wishes – which...

Don't fear the reaper by Jennie Kermode
Gothic Harvest

Ashley Hamilton’s Gothic Harvest, a New Orleans-based tale of ancient family curses and young women learning the hard way that they should be wary of talking to strangers, is likely to be noticed by horror fans due to the presence of Lin Shaye. Much admired for her work in the Insidious franchise and, more recently, The Final Wish (which she and I spoke about in January), she’s always looking for interesting new characters to explore. We discussed Gothic Harvest last month, on Friday the 13th with a full moon in the sky. She told me she’d been waiting for a parcel for months and had been told it would be delivered that day “of all days,” so she was convinced that these omens meant something would go wrong.

“I’m superstitious in a good way, I think,” she says, laughing, as we begin. “All roads lead to good.

Ambition Trailer: New Line Cinema Founder Bob Shaye Directs a Fresh Thriller
The official trailer for Ambition dropped today. From the producers of Nightmare on Elm Street, Ambition is a suspenseful thriller that creates a world where desire and revenge converge into a questionable reality.

Jude is an intense, driven musician preparing for the biggest performance of her life-but her ambition could end up killing her. As her competitors begin to die bizarre deaths, she recognizes a pattern that seems to connect her. Is she next? Her suspicions are confirmed in a shocking climax that puts into question her chances for survival, and her sanity.

The trailer opens like any other music-centric drama with an eerie twist. Jude is told she is "very talented... just like Emily." Unfortunately, it seems Emily Foster committed suicide, though some believe she was pushed. Jude is told not to let what happened to Emily get to her because it will make her go crazy. The trailer reminds us to.

Tony Sokol Mar 8, 2019

Vertical Entertainment, which released the John Travolta starring gangster biopic Gotti, is taking a whack at witches in the occult vendetta film Blood Craft. They dropped the trailer in a fit of wrath. It is a revenge film with dark magic at the center.

Blood Craft was directed by horror genre specialist James Cullen Bressack. He co-wrote the screenplay with Madeleine Wade, who stars in the film as one of two witchcraft-practicing siblings. Her sister is played by Augie Duke. They want to take revenge on their father. The only problem is that he is already dead.

The film is currently enjoying a festivals run through March. “We can’t wait for audiences to discover this unique, thrilling and very Disturbing film," Bressack said in a statement. It will be available...

Official Trailer for True Story Drama 'Walk. Ride. Rodeo.' from Netflix
"Rodeo isn't something I 'do', it's really – it's who I am." Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for an inspirational indie drama titled Walk. Ride. Rodeo., based on a true story about a young barrel racer who keeps racing despite a bad accident. The film tells the incredible true story of Amberley Snyder, a nationally ranked rodeo barrel racer who defies the odds after barely surviving a car accident that leaves her paralyzed from the waist down. Spencer Locke stars Amberley, with a full cast including Missi Pyle, Bailey Chase, Sherri Shepherd, Max Ehrich, Alyvia Alyn Lind, Kathleen Rose Perkins, Raleigh Cain, and Barbara Alyn Woods. This is another one of these extra cheesy tearjerkers, with all the cliche lines of dialogue about overcoming anything and chasing your dreams. Here's the first official trailer for Conor Allyn's Walk. Ride. Rodeo., direct from Netflix's YouTube: The incredible true...

Meet Melissa Bolona, the New Scream Queen: I Love 'Dark' Roles
Melissa Bolona
Melissa Bolona isn’t exactly like most actresses with a flourishing movie career.

The New Jersey-native, whose father is Peruvian and mother is American, says she’d always entertained the idea of acting for a living but never thought it was one of those things that could actually happen.

“I have no family in the industry,” says Bolona, 29. “I never thought of it as a viable option. School was always a priority in my family.”

In fact, it wasn’t until she was studying business abroad in Paris—she graduated from Pace university with a degree in International Marketing—that...

Michael Welch at an event for Eclipse (2010)
Delving into the past can lead a person to uncover a far more sinister discovery than they originally anticipated. That’s certainly the case for actor Michael Welch‘s troubled protagonist in the new horror film, ‘The Final Wish.’ The gritty and stylistic drama follows the conflicted character as he sets out to confront his past demons, […]

Wish you were here by Jennie Kermode
Lin Shaye in The Final Wish

If you’re read much folklore, you’ll be aware that the granting of wishes often comes with a price attached. When Aaron (Michael Welch) returns to his family home after the death of his antique collector father, he discovers an item with a sinister past and is surprised at the sudden improvements that seem to take place in his fortunes, but it’s all too quickly evident to viewers that something sinister is afoot. Central to the film, and responsible for much of its emotional impact, is the presence of Lin Shaye as Kate, the mother he has been out of touch with for some years. Ever since her unforgettable turn in Insidious in 2010, Lin has been adored by horror fans, but her involvement with the genre goes back decades before that and she has a great deal of other impressive work to her name,...

Exclusive ‘The Final Wish’ Clip Teases the New Horror from the Creator of ‘Final Destination’
Pro tip: Don't piss off Lin Shaye. At least that's what I'm taking away from our exclusive new clip from the horror thriller The Final Wish. A "new tale of death" from the creator of Final Destination, The Final Wish stars Michael Welch as a young man who returns to his hometown after the death of his father, where he has to face his devastated mother (Shaye) and the demons from his past. Things take a turn from the tragic to the terrifying when Aaron discovers a mysterious artifact in his father's belongings and sets a …...

Lin Shaye Terrifies in Exclusive The Final Wish Clip
Daniel Kurland Jan 14, 2019

Horror icon Lin Shaye stars in a new horror film from the creator of Final Destination, and we’ve got an exclusive look!

It’s always exciting when a horror film can think up a truly unique premise to draw its scares from—though we just as easily love when reliable staples from the genre are reconfigured to popular (and often gruesome) delight. Yet the ideal situation is when the best of both worlds can blend like so much blood and terror, and an old fashioned idea can be spun off in a radically new and exciting direction. That’s exactly what appears to be happening in the upcoming The Final Wish.

The Final Wish taps into that karmic retribution horror that makes the simple monkey's paw archetype still so effective. When Aaron Hammond (Michael Welch) returns home to help his mother (Lin Shaye) after the death of his father,...

Tony Todd Explains Why There Will Probably Never Be A Final Destination 6
Over the course of his acting career, Tony Todd has continued to find work in the horror genre, but aside from his lead turn in the Candyman movies, Final Destination may still be the one series that the actor is best known for, with Todd assuming the role of mortician William Bludworth in three of the franchise’s five installments.

But while the property has found consistent commercial success with its series of mundane yet elaborate death scenes, Todd feels that the Final Destination films may have reached their final destination, telling Bloody Disgusting that it’s simply an issue of profit.

“I am [surprised] but I know why there hasn’t been [another sequel],” Todd said. “It’s really an expensive film to shoot. Just getting whatever accident set pieces, like for example part two with the whole traffic accident, that took a good five weeks to shoot and at least 20 million bucks.

Daily Dead’s 2019 Winter Horror Preview
Happy almost 2019, dear readers! The holiday season is nearly over, but rather than let that get you down, why not indulge in some great horror movies coming our way over the next few months? Usually, the winter season of genre releases can be something of a mixed bag in terms of quality, but there some impressive projects coming out in the next few months that have me extremely excited as a horror fan. The two films that are my most anticipated are (of course) Us from Jordan Peele and Christopher Landon’s sequel Happy Death Day 2U, but I’m also very intrigued by what I’ve seen from films like Greta, Glass, Braid, Captive State, and Escape Room so far, and am really looking forward to seeing how those stories come together onscreen as well.

We also have a new sci-fi movie featuring Keanu Reeves getting released in the coming months,...

Official Trailer for Haunted Past Horror 'The Final Wish' with Lin Shaye
"The universe demands balance. For there to be life, there must be death." Cinedigm has released an official trailer for an indie horror thriller film titled The Final Wish, which just premiered at the Screamfest Film Festival earlier this fall. The film is about a man who returns home after the death of his father, to help his grief-stricken mother and to confront his past. While going through his dad's belongings, he comes across a mysterious item that is more than it seems. That's the only plot details provided, and this trailer doesn't help explain anything. The Final Wish stars horror iconic Lin Shaye, along with Michael Welch, Melissa Bolona, Tony Todd, Spencer Locke, and Kaiwi Lyman. Unfortunately this film looks like yet another derivative, repetitive supernatural horror without much of anything new to offer the genre. Check it anyway. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Timothy Woodward Jr's The Final Wish,...

Exclusive: Cinedigm has acquired North American distribution rights to The Final Wish, the Timothy Woodward Jr-directed horror film starring Lin Shaye and penned by Final Destination franchise creator Jeffrey Reddick. An early 2019 theatrical release is planned.

Produced by Status Media & Entertainment, the film, which premiered earlier this year at Los Angeles’ Screamfest Horror Film Festival, follows a young man (Michael Welch), struggling in his life and career, who returns home to his devastated mother (Shaye) following the passing of his father, an antiques collector.

Once home, he encounters a run of good luck but can’t shake the feeling that there is something sinister at work, and these events may be tied to a mysterious antiquity that, legend has it, grants wishes but kills and steals souls in return. Spencer Locke, Melissa Bolona and Tony Todd also star.
