A Christmas Tale – Tubi

Before Paco Plaza helmed international horror hits, including the [Rec] franchise and Netflix’s Veronica, he directed an Amblin-like kids story that turns grim with the made-for-tv movie A Christmas Tale, as part of Six Films to Keep You Awake.

The Best Horror Movies Streaming This Month Are Christmas Horror Movies (December 2024)
Image
It's the holiday season, which can mean only one thing: it's time to watch Christmas horror movies! Christmas horror is nothing new. In the Victorian era, folks would gather by the fireside around Christmas time to tell each other ghost stories (this is how we got "A Christmas Carol"). Over the years, the horror genre has embraced this idea by unleashing horror films set on or around Christmas. Some of these films are quite bad and seem to recycle the same boring idea ("What if a guy dressed as Santa Claus killed people?!") over and over again. But there are others that make the yuletide bright. Hell, even some of the killer Santa stories work. As the weird year that was 2024 comes to a close, and the horrifying uncertainty of 2025 lurks right around the corner, let's chug some mulled wine, deck the halls, and watch the following Christmas-centric horror movies.

The Last Stop in Yuma County Review | A Cool & Chaotic Western Thriller

Quick Links Some Guys Walk Into a Diner... Jocelin Donahue's Diner Jim Cummings Is a Star

There's a rare type of film that breaks halfway through or so, where the story we've been following suddenly shifts into something totally unexpected, or outright cuts to new characters completely. Of course, Alfred Hitchock's Psycho is famous for this, and it seems to be most prominent in horror films like that Audition, One Cut of the Dead, From Dusk Till Dawn, The Empty Man, and Zach Cregger's recent film, Barbarian. Now add Francis Galluppi's feature film debut, the deliciously tense Western thriller, The Last Stop in Yuma County, which has finally hit the masses this week. Its success on the festival circuit led to Galluppi being tapped to helm one of the next installments in the timeless Evil Dead franchise.

The great director Jim Cummings stars in the film alongside...

Warning: Spoilers for The Last Stop In Yuma County!

Jocelin Donahue and director Francis Galluppi worked closely to develop Charlotte's backstory, adding layers to her character's resilience and resourcefulness. Donahue was thrilled to reunite with Richard Brake on set, praising her scene partner's abilities and work ethic. Donahue pulled from her family history for Charlotte's costume, enhancing her character's essence for the film's unique setting.

Jocelin Donahue isn't the helpless hostage two gunmen think in crime thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County. Donahue has been a major player in the indie movie scene over the past 15 years since landing her first leading role in Ti West's acclaimed horror movie The House of the Devil, going on to star in the likes of Knight of Cups, Dead Awake, Holidays and I Trapped the Devil. 4 Grim Christmas Horror Movies for the Unhappiest Holidays [12 Days of Creepmas]
Image
As Phoebe Cates’ character Kate Beringer in Gremlins famously monologued, the holidays tend to drudge up painful memories and sorrow for many. In the spirit of unhappy holidays, the 4th day of Creepmas is dedicated to Christmas horror movies that aren’t afraid to showcase the grimmer side of the holiday season.

Forget about holiday cheer; these holiday horror movies – in order from somber to soul-crushing (and skin-crawling)- will make you give thanks that you’re not in the protagonists’ shoes.

The 12 Days of Creepmas continues on Bloody Disgusting, this time with 4 grim Christmas horror movies that will leave you feeling hopeless for the unhappiest of holidays.

Keep track of the 12 Days of Creepmas here.

Xx

This anthology features four segments of horror, but only the first is holiday-related. Jovanka Vuckovic’s “The Box,” based on Jack Ketchum’s short story of the same name, sees a family stricken...

Holiday Horror ‘I Trapped the Devil’ Gives off Strong ‘Twilight Zone’ Vibes
Image
It is rare for a film to successfully combine horror with the holiday season, with unanimous acclaim only reserved for one of the earliest slasher films, Black Christmas. Audiences may not even put Christmas and the horror genre together in the first place, and it is not easy to get the holiday-horror fusion right. But in 2019, director and writer Josh Lobo brought a slow burn that is both festive and chilling, perfect for the holiday season. I Trapped the Devil, ironically released in April, was met with mixed-to-positive reviews. While the film does not shock or draw the viewer in with intense scares or gore, Lobo's feature film debut plays more as a compelling urban legend filled with mystery and dread. The film did not gain immense popularity at the time of its release, but it is about time it did, especially now that it's available to stream on Shudder.

‘This Is Us’ Star Chris Sullivan to Lead ABC Comedy Pilot ‘The Son in Law’
Image
Chris Sullivan is set to star in the ABC comedy pilot “The Son in Law,” Variety has confirmed.

Sullivan will star in the single-cam comedy as Jake, a divorced dad with a 21 year old daughter. Jake never thought he would love again, until Asha came along. The problem is that Jake, a hard-working plumbing contractor, is solidly middle class, while Asha hails from the equivalent of uber-wealthy South Asian royalty. Jake wants to marry Asha, and while he still needs to ask Asha’s father for his blessing, the real stumbling block is Asha’s loving but controlling mother, who doesn’t hide her feelings about Jake being all wrong for her daughter.

Sullivan currently stars on the hit NBC drama “This Is Us,” which is airing its sixth and final season. His work on the show has netted him two Emmy nominations for best supporting actor in a drama series.

[Indie Horror Month 2021] Ihm: Revisited – Video Interview with Actor Aj Bowen (Part One)
Image
Hi, everyone! As we make our way through the week, we have another two-part video interview cued up from our Ihm: Revisited series. The next pair of interview clips feature indie horror actor Aj Bowen, who blew me away with his performance as Lewis in The Signal, and continued to knock my proverbial socks off in other films like The House of the Devil and A Horrible Way to Die, as well as recent films like I Trapped the Devil, Synchronicity, Teenage Cocktail, and The Sacrament.

In this first part of our interview with Bowen, he chatted about how Creepshow 3 kickstarted his career as he was getting his start as an actor, the collaborative process he experienced while working on The Signal, and how humbling the release of The Signal ended up being, despite enjoying a successful festival run and a slew of great critical responses.

SohoHorror: ‘JuleBlod’ Review
Image
Stars: Stig Henrik Hoff, Sondre Krogtoft Larsen, Truls Svendsen | Written and Directed by Reinert Kill

If you’ve ever read any of my reviews around December, then you will probably know that I love Christmas movies. So when they mix perfectly together with the horror genre I am even happier.

That said, unfortunately, there’s not a whole lot of Christmas horror released each year, and even less, Good Christmas horror. In recent years, Better Watch Out, Await Further Instructions, Hosts, Black Christmas, I Trapped The Devil and The Lodge have all been largely entertaining and of good quality. Norwegian movie Jule Blood (Christmas Blood) covers a Christmas murderer who has escaped jail and back on the loose for that special day.

When it focuses on the killer Santa Claus, Jule Blood is at its best. Not unlike many slasher movies, the deaths don’t come thick and fast until...

Frightfest 2019: ‘I Trapped the Devil’ Review
Stars: Scott Poythress, Chris Sullivan, Jocelin Donahue, Aj Bowen, Susan Burke | Written and Directed by Josh Lobo

I have mentioned many many times that I absolutely love Christmas movies. And I mean any type of movie that has that great Christmas feeling – romantic comedy? Aslong as it’s set at Christmas, I’ll probably like it! So when horror and Christmas collide I am always first in line to watch it.

That said, I Trapped The Devil doesn’t exactly have a ‘Christmas spirit’ but it is set at Christmas, and the season does play a part in the movie. This actually had a bit of a Krampus feel to it at times (only with zero comedy). The ‘unhappy family Christmas but stuck with each other for now’ setting felt familiar. Perhaps strangely, the Christmas lights were something that stuck out while watching the movie. They add this brightly coloured...

Frightfest 2019: ‘The Wind’ Review
Stars: Miles Anderson, Caitlin Gerard, Julia Goldani Telles, Dylan McTee, Ashley Zukerman | Written by Teresa Sutherland | Directed by Emma Tammi

Showing at this year’s Frightfest and being picked up by the Frightfest Presents label, The Wind has been well received at festivals across the globe. The last film I remember being based around the wind was The Happening, so The Wind doesn’t have much competition in those stakes.

The immediate impact The Wind had on me was that incredible score. It lead to this brief exchange with my partner after the first ten minutes or so of the movie:

My partner: “It’s a bit loud. I’ve got my headphones on and I can still hear it.”

Me: “But can you hear that score? I love it already. It’s amazing!”

My partner: “Just turn it down.”

I turned it down very slightly. And it didn’t...

Scott Poythress and Chris Sullivan in I Trapped the Devil (2019)
Film Review: ‘I Trapped the Devil’
Scott Poythress and Chris Sullivan in I Trapped the Devil (2019)
“I Trapped the Devil” sounds like the title of a sermon or gospel song, but it’s a very literal-minded statement coming from the mouth of a leading character in writer-director Josh Lobo’s debut feature. This being a horror film, there’s a chance he’s even literally correct, rather than simply mad. A mixed-bag frightfest, IFC’s limited theatrical release doesn’t ultimately provide quite enough reward for a slow buildup. But it proves Lobo an able helmer (if one who could probably use a co-writer next time), eking decent atmospherics and good performances within a potentially claustrophobic premise.

In a framing device, two policemen break into a seemingly empty house where something is intangibly amiss. As they’re just about to find out what that is, the film jumps back several hours earlier, when others are arriving at the same house. Matt (Aj Bowen) and wife Karen...

Patience Is Necessary For “I Trapped The Devil”
Slow burn horror/thrillers require some very specific tools to proceed. Especially when the title is an independent one with limited money and time at its disposal, it’s easier thought of than executed. In the case of this week’s new release I Trapped the Devil, as novel concept ends up ever so slightly underwhelming. Something like this probably needed some stronger acting to keep you invested as the tension builds. Admittedly, the ending is solid, but not quite solid enough to make up for 70 or so minutes that’s come before it. This is far from a bad work, though I can’t bring myself to give it a full on recommendation. The movie is a mix of horror and thriller, told with a vast amount of patience. Set during Christmas, this is a look at a family reunion of sorts gone very wrong. When Matt (Aj Bowen...

Review: ‘I Trapped the Devil’ Revels in Sinister Yuletide Horror
Tragedy struck some time ago and we honestly don’t need to know the details to understand how it’s affected the three characters we’re about to meet. Steve (Scott Poythress) is the one who’s hurting from it and has been ever since. Maybe his brother Matt (Aj Bowen) thought space was needed for him to heal or maybe he was just too unsure about what he could do to help alleviate his pain and/or scared about what doing so entailed, but it’s been awhile since they’ve last seen each other. This is why Matt’s wife Karen (Susan Burke) has dragged him out during Christmas to make certain her brother-in-law wouldn’t be alone. With Steve proving less surprised than inconvenienced upon their impromptu arrival, the gesture might be too late.

Or maybe it’s just in time since writer/director Josh Lobo’s...

Evil is Unleashed in Trailer For The Christmas Horror Thriller I Trapped The Devil
"There is something evil locked behind that door!"

I’ve got a trailer here for you to watch for a new Christmas-set horror movie called I Trapped The Devil. The story revolves around a man who descends into paranoia and madness after trapping what he believes to be the devil in his basement. Things end up taking a very dark, twisted turn when his estranged brother unexpectedly shows up for the holiday.

The movie actually looks like it could be pretty good and worth checking out. In the trailer, the movie is compared to The Twilight Zone. Here’s the synopsis:

Christmas is supposed to be a time for peace and joyful family reunions. But when Matt (Aj Bowen) and his wife Karen (Susan Burke) show up unannounced at the home of his estranged brother Steve (Scott Poythress) to celebrate the holidays, they are instead greeted with a horrifying surprise:...

Official Trailer for Horror 'I Trapped the Devil' Set During the Holidays
"There is something evil locked behind that door!" IFC Midnight has debuted an official trailer for the indie horror thriller I Trapped the Devil, an intriguing horror mystery set during the Holidays. Here's what it's about: a man descends into paranoia after trapping what he believes to be the devil in his basement, but things take a dark turn when his family (his estranged brother) unexpectedly arrive for the holidays. Is it really Satan? What is truly going on here? "Either way, the stage is set for a true Christmas from hell." This crafty horror stars Aj Bowen, Jocelin Donahue, Scott Poythress, Susan Burke, Chris Sullivan, Rowan Russell, and Josh Marrott. This looks cool. Brad Miska of Bloody Disgusting makes a Twilight Zone reference in the quote (on the poster), which makes me even more intrigued. I need to check this out. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Josh Lobo's I Trapped the Devil,...
