Does anyone know if the parent's house in NY was in Elmhurst, Queens? Looks like my old neighborhood ----- According to the site untapped new york (they wont let me put the URL in). It was filmed in the following places:

Forest Hills Queens Union Pool in Williamsberg New Kim Tuong Restaurant (formerly 83 Kien Tuong Restaurant) in Chinatown at 83 Chrystie Street Upper East Side

There is some English, but most of the film is in Mandarin. There are subtitles for all the Mandarin and bits of other foreign languages.

Considering her age, it would likely have been the Chinese Civil War of 1945-49. in which the Communist Party of China defeated the Kuomintang-led government of the Republic of China. Given that the men later became "senior officials in the government", they presumably fought on the communist side.
