After several decades of TV murder mysteries involving teen girls, it's pretty much impossible to come up with a story that hasn't been done before. But Paramount+ series "School Spirits" attempted the impossible with its eight-episode first season, which follows high schooler Maddie Nears (Peyton List) as she adjusts -- or refuses to adjust -- to the purgatorial school she's sent to in the afterlife. The show's supernatural premise makes it pretty unique already, but the season 1 finale also ups the ante with a big reveal: Maddie never actually died.

Though this twist was foreshadowed in earlier episodes, "School Spirits" does leave audiences hanging with its finale. It drops just enough information to make fans yell "What?!" without actually getting into the dark details surrounding Maddie, a ghost named Janet, and chem teacher turned therapy group leader Mr. Martin. Exclusive: With the Frasier sequel series for Paramount+ wrapping production, star and executive producer Kelsey Grammer and his Grammnet Nh Productions has closed a first-look television deal with CBS Studios, the studio behind the Cheers/Frasier franchise.

The pact marks a homecoming for Grammer at CBS Studios. The actor-producer’s previous Grammnet banner had a series of overall deals at the studio and its predecessor Paramount Network TV, which yielded such hit series as Medium for NBC/CBS, Girlfriends for Upn/The CW, its spinoff The Game, which aired for nine seasons on Upn/The CW/BET. The film penned by Bateman consists of 14 vignettes, both comedic and dramatic, which look at women’s faces getting older, and why that makes people angry. While much of society appears to assume that women’s faces are somehow broken and need to be fixed, Face reveals some of the many ways in which women, and those around them, allow this idea to take root at all.

Parker will play Tanya, an actress balancing her need to use her face for her job and the pressure to not move it at all, with Moss as Mrs. Foster, a kindergarten teacher whose young students remind her of the magical functionality of the face.

In a time of reboots, remakes and sequels, Wattpad Webtoon is aiming to bring more original stories to Hollywood and counter that franchise bloat. The series order is part of Paramount’s push to expand its YA content. School Spirits (w/t) will be produced by Awesomeness Studio.

School Spirits (w/t) focuses on a teen stuck in the afterlife who decides to investigate her mysterious disappearance alongside a group of other students who are also stuck in limbo at their high school. The book is planned for publication in fall 2023 by Clarion Books/HarperAlley, an imprint of HarperCollins Children’s Books.

Exclusive: Keith Powers (The Tomorrow War), Brianne Tju (I Know What You Did Last Summer) and Chase Stokes (Outer Banks) have signed on to star opposite Joey King in Uglies, a dystopian fantasy film based on Scott Westerfeld’s international bestseller of the same name, which McG is directing for Netflix.

Uglies is set in a world in which a compulsory operation at sixteen makes everyone pretty by conforming to an ideal standard of beauty.

Between the live action reboot of Mortal Kombat and my growing appreciation of the animated Batman films it was pretty much a given that I would check out another of Warner’s animated offerings, Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms.

Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms begins with a couple fleeing through deserted streets before being confronted by a trio of nasty looking creatures. They kill the couple but Raiden (Dave B. Mitchell; Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous) arrives in time to save their baby whom the mother names Liu Kang with her dying breath.

Social storytelling platform Wattpad and digital comic platform Webtoon announced a merger of their studio divisions to create Wattpad Webtoon Studios with the parent company of both, Naver, committing $100 million for development and production financing.

Wattpad, based in Toronto, was recently acquired by Naver a South Korean internet conglomerate that owned Webtoon. The new, combined studio will strengthen Naver’s global position in IP, digital comics and web novels.

Wattpad Webtoon Studios will create global fan and data-driven TV shows, films, and books, unlocking the combined companies’ global IP libraries and growing roster of creators and fandoms across genres. It currently has more than 100 projects in development or production.

Exclusive: Unhuman will be the second of eight standalone horror and genre films from Epix’s and Blumhouse’s TV movie partnership.

From director Marcus Dunstan and writer Paul Soter, Unhuman follows the first film in the series A House on the Bayou and stars Brianne Tju (Light As a Feather), Benjamin Wadsworth (Your Honor), Ali Gallo (The Carpool) and Uriah Shelton (Freaky).

Unhuman follows a group of high school students whose school bus crashes while on a field trip. Relationships are tested amongst the students once they realize they are being stalked by a mysterious attacker who intends to drive them out of their bucolic adolescence and straight into a horrifying fight to survive.

Agent-producer Brian Sher has been named president of Quality Films, the film and television division of Quality Control, the label and management company that spawned the careers of Lil Baby, Lil Yachty, City Girls, Migos and many more.

According to the announcement, in his new role, Sher will oversee development and production of the company’s slate, which will emphasize culturally driven stories, as well as develop vehicles for the label’s artists. Kevin “Coach K” Lee and Pierre “P” Thomas are the founders of Quality Control and its ever-expanding media umbrella.

Exclusive: Voltage Pictures has taken worldwide rights to American Boogeywoman, based on the early life of one of America’s most notorious female serial killers, Aileen Wuornos. Charlize Theron won an Oscar for playing her in the 2003 film Monster.

Currently in postproduction, the film stars Cobra Kai star Peyton List as young Wuornos and is written and directed by horror filmmaker Daniel Farrands.

After recurring on Cobra Kai, Vanessa Rubio and Peyton List have been promoted to series regulars for the upcoming Season 4 of the popular Netflix series starring Ralph Macchio and William Zabka. Additionally, Dallas Dupree Young (Cousins for Life) and newcomer Oona O’Brien have been tapped for recurring roles on the fourth season of the Karate Kid sequel series.

Rubio has portrayed Carmen Diaz since Season 1, appearing in 16 episodes. Carmen is Miguel’s (Xolo Maridueña) hard-working mother who would do anything to protect her son.

List has played Tory Nichols, since Season 2, appearing in 15 episodes. Tory is a vtroubled teen who speaks her mind and is willing to take on anyone in a fight.

“Cobra Kai” has promoted both Vanessa Rubio and Peyton List to series regular status ahead of Season 4 on Netflix.

Rubio has been with the show since Season 1 in the role of Carmen Diaz, the mother of Johnny Lawrence’s star pupil, Miguel. List joined the show in Season 2 as Tory Nichols, a tough-as-nails member of Cobra Kai.

In addition, both Dallas Dupree Young and Oona O’Brien have joined Season 4. Young will recur as Kenny, a bullied new kid in school who turns to karate as a way to defend himself. O’Brien will recur as Devon, a potential new karate student who is relentlessly competitive, a quick study, and equally quick-tempered when she’s provoked.

Rubio’s past credits include the Netflix shows “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” “Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings,” and “Master of None.” In film, she has appeared in “How to Be Single,” “The Hudson Tribes,” and “The Girl in Trouble.

Chick Corea died on February 9, 2021, due to “a rare form of cancer which was only discovered very recently,” as was announced on social media. He was 79-years-old, and leaves behind a legacy as a pioneer of jazz fusion, but his musical output never stopped — from his earlier career working with Miles Davis all the way to his 2020 double album “Plays.” He’s one of the biggest winners in the history of the Grammys, and he could actually increase that total this year, albeit posthumously.

As Chick Corea witnessed for himself again and again, including on the British music series The Old Grey Whistle Test in 1976, the strangest thing happened in pop during the Seventies. Music fans would buy tickets to arena or amphitheater shows by bands like Return to Forever — founded and fronted by the late jazz keyboardist, who died of an unspecified type of cancer on February 9th at 79. Then they would settle into their seats and watch, and attentively listen, as the musicians would play an hour or two of entirely instrumental music.

I Know What You Did Last Summer will star Madison Iseman (Jumanji: The Next Level), Brianne Tju (Light as a Feather), Ezekiel Goodman, Ashley Moore (Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping), Sebastian Amoruso (Solve), Fiona Rene (Stumptown), Cassie Beck (Connecting), Brooke Bloom (Homecoming), and Bill Heck (I’m Your Woman).

The show's executive producers include James Wan, with Craig Macneill directing and executive producing the first episode of the series. "I Know What You Did Last Summer...

ViacomCBS’s Kids & Family division is consolidating all of its live-action production under one team, the company announced Tuesday.

The team, led by Nick executives Shauna Phelan and Zack Olin, will oversee development, current series and studio content for both the Nickelodeon and Awesomeness brands. Syrinthia Studer will continue in her role overseeing the combined live-action film studio. All three report to ViacomCBS Kids & Family president Brian Robbins.

The move to streamline the division’s live-action operations comes as Shelley Zimmerman, executive vice president of live-action for Awesomeness, has opted stepped down from her position and exit the company after nearly six years.

Current live-action series at Nick include the “All That” revival, the “Henry Danger” spinoff “Danger Force” and Tyler Perry’s “Young Dylan,” among others. Recent live-action series from Awesomeness include “PEN15” and “Light as a Feather” at Hulu and the two-season drama “Trinkets” at Netflix.

ABC has given a straight-to-series order to a multi-camera comedy starring and executive produced by Alec Baldwin and Kelsey Grammer. The project, slated for the 2021-22 season, hails from Modern Family co-creator/executive producer Chris Lloyd, executive producer Vali Chandrasekaran and studio 20th Television, where Lloyd and Chandrasekaran are under deals.

Written by Lloyd and Chandrasekaran, the Untitled Alex Baldwin/Kelsey Grammer Project follows three men — two of them played by Grammer and Baldwin — who were roommates in their 20s until their warring egos drove them apart. They reunite decades later for one more run at the lives they’ve always wanted.
