Intrigue on top of intrigue. With so much flashback filling in the details of the plot.

The set is Hengdian Studio. The stage is China itself. That made it grander than Beyond the Realm of Conscience.

Although, considered a sequel, I find it interesting that this takes place earlier in history.

Not fluent in the language any more, I found the poetic dialogue quite easy to understand.

Many outstanding performers. Alice Chan as the ruthless Princess Taiping, who seems much younger than Steven Ma's Emperor Li Longji. While she plays the plotting aunt until the end, she does have her some standout moments. Kenneth Ma as Yam Sam-Shu is tender in his romantic scenes with Jacqueline Wong (Kam Yuek-Chin) and even-tempered in his scene as a court offier. A far cry from his other roles.

Empress Dowager (a widow who has control of the wealth) is battling for the throne in palace intrigue over control of the country in some Chinese dynasty era. Seems as if most of the production costs were spent on costuming and, well, more costuming. The minor rest of the budget spent on a single stage palace interior (and a few adjoining spaces) where perhaps 80% of the series' scenes were shot. Basically you get lots of talking heads especially amongst the maidens/concubines, family members & guards. Oh, predictably a couple of deaths/assassinations.
