Is there an overlapping "story arc" from, or do I otherwise need to have played through, the story of the previous two games in order to grasp the story in this instalment?
I don't believe so, although I speak as someone who played through this game without having played the others. All you really need to know is that Trinity is the bad guy organization and Lara met Jonah on the ship from the first game.
