Some may not find this show interesting, I've seen some reviews that reflect that. I am chiming in to inform you that this show is not about back to back plot twists, and crazy developments. If that's what you're looking for, you won't find it here and you shouldn't go much further. However, if you are at all interested in the human condition, this is a story for you. It's more than just her going through the motions, it is telling their story. You learn about what happened, what lead up to the lead up to the death of Matt. You come face to face with real life obstacles that a widow faces and the complications that arise along the way. This story is about human connection and the struggles of a widow truly mourning her husband. Elizabeth did an incredible job in this performance, and I felt every moment of it. This story inspired me and this story inspired my own writing and I refer anyone I know to it. It's ten episodes, by the end of it you will be able to figure out how you feel about it for yourself. I hope you enjoy it as I did.
Grief is one of those human conditions which movies and television in particular, often seem awkward to deal with. But then, many many people find grief deeply awkward to deal with - whether it's your own grief or someone else's.
What can surprise people is the anger which can accompany grief.
This is an amazingly touching show. Elizabeth Olsons's very best performance, in my opinion, because she made it feel like her own personal experience. This is Dacron what a great actor is supposed to do. Right? Make it seem so real. Hers is a story about those left behind to deal with a loved one dealing with depression. We all want to fix those we care about when they can't fix themselves. Whether it is an addiction, or mental illness that cannot be fixed, the experience is so bad for the other person too because they feel totally helpless. For those of us who feel we can't stand by and let someone suffer, losing them is devastating. We all want to have a "live happily ever after" Outcome. But, sadly, that is not always possible. Because it involves a loved one, it is especially hard when there isn't a happy ending. Or, becomes just a momentary bad moment in an otherwise happily ever after.
I thought Elizabeth Olsen did a wonderful job. Some of it is incredibly sad but it is but so beautifully handled. I saw someone commenting that nothing happened, which just isn't true, it's not a fast paced show but that is the point. I hope there is a season 2
This is a very nuanced portrayal of grief that is really poignant. With astute observations about depression, feeling lost in life, memory and acceptance. The sad news is that after an excellent first season, creators could not find a way to move the story in a meaningful way. So the second season doesn't pack the same punch as the first one.
However, its a real shame that a smart drama about adults dealing with everyday life somehow feels groundbreaking in 2021.
