Nurlan drives his train every day through rural Azerbaijan and a suburb of the megacity of Baku. There is so little space in this slum that the residents hang up their clotheslines over the railroad tracks.
During one of these rides, a nice blue bra gets caught on the train from Nurlan. Who in the district is the owner of the laundry? Nurlan sets out on an unusual mission to find the woman and maybe love.
The film by German director Veit Helmer tells the warmhearted story in quiet pictures and without dialogue. A bold cinematic experiment, only visually we follow the Protagonist on his extraordinary quest - experiment succeeded - highly recommended.

Quirky. Real.
Real quirky.
Don't listen to negative reviews.
Try it.
Glorious depiction of a boring life turned around, for just a minute.
Some cruelty, strange passages and events.
Modern day Cinderella with some quirky realness.
Don't be afraid.
Try it.

The first gift of the film is Miki Manojlovic. The fans of Kusturica know why. The second - in my case- Maia Morgenstern. The secod gift - the atmosphere, and the simplicity of story and flavours of so many books, films, near reality fragment. Not the last - the special poetry proposed by the absence of dialogue and the cinematography. And, sure, the boy, the great small boy. So, many gifts of this not ordinary but profound touching of Cinderella story.

Charming little film. It says it's in English which is a bit deceiving. There's actually no dialogue whatsoever in the whole movie. What an accomplishment. It's a sweet tale about a train engineer in the remote area of India (I'm guessing). It shows his daily, boring life, until one day, a woman's bra gets tangled up on the front of the engine. He's then on a quest to return the bra to its rightful owner. Sounds boring, but I thought it was very engaging, in a very subtle sort of way. Just a delightful, well-acted story.

A poetic, funny and touching modern-times re-imagining of the Cinderella story and Chaplin's The Kid with a good cast, lovable characters, beautiful cinematography and a very fitting soundtrack. Oh, and with almost no words. :-)
I really enjoyed the fact there is a bit of everything in this movie - comedy, drama, action, suspense, erotica; love, hope, exasperation, misunderstanding, sadness, cruelty, humanity...
Unlike other people, I don't think the artistic exaggeration in a couple of the scenes was over the top - this is one of the main characteristics of comedy and in this specific instance it actually helped show in an amusing way the character's dedication to complete the mission. From what I heard around me after the end credits, the rest of the audience seemed to agree with me. Also, everyone laughed a good deal which counts as a great success in my books.

It's hard to decide if this movie has a deeper meaning to it. But it is entertaining and encourages us to fall in love with several of the women the main character pursues in his quest to find the one true match.
Our hero, the dedicated train conductor, shows his virtue is that he is chaste. He is not out for philandering. He really wants to return the brassiere in question to its rightful owner. Does the train represent his will? Are the women sensual distractions from the never ending search for existential truth? It's hard to say if we arrive at wisdom at the end. But it's an adorable ride.
Denis Lavant gives a brief but sparkling performance as an apprentice train conductor.

I wasn't sure what to expect but I'm glad I saw it on a whim. It didn't take long for the silent story to captivate me, and having travelled myself to similar cultured places was surprised to see the authenticity. The story is an obvious take on Cinderella where the protagonist is trying to find one specific person who owns this bra. But with a unique culture twist. I enjoyed it very much

I felt some of the scenes were very cartoonish and others just were so slow and didn't have the same playful feeling to them, so I guess in a sense it just wasn't strange enough in some scenes and in others it was just too drawn out and real, I became frustrated for the character and felt no matter what the ending it just wasn't going to be satisfying and in a way it ended that way for me. Artistically it was fantastic and felt rewarding. Characters were endearing and culturally it was interesting to watch for me. I would genuinely like to see similar films constructed in this fashion with just a bit more attention to pace and rhythm. They really could have cut out about half of his failed interactions and it would have been far more satisfying to watch. The pace and repetitiveness would probably turn off a good deal of viewers but anyone who really enjoys the art of film should be able to see this as a worthwhile addition to their watch-list.

This is probably the quirkiest movie I've seen in over a decade or two. For one the movie has no dialogue from start to finish. And two, the movie revolves around a bra. Accept that simple story line and you will find this movie interesting. I think it's what got me to watch it all the way, to see how the story evolves.
But even without any dialogue, the actors where able to convey their intentions well and the movie articulate the story through acting and great direction. I mean, you fully understood what was happening. No need for complex explanation - it's all simple. And the whole thing surprisingly works extremely well.
A good way to summarise the type of story this is, is... it's a different take on the Cinderella story. Just using a bra instead of a glass sleeper.
Give it a go, you might get some amusement from it - just like I surprisingly did.

The Bra is the funniest film I saw at IFFK 2022 at the time of writing. More so because a lot can go wrong in a film like this that often inadvertently tries to enter misogyny territory but never does. You can't predict what's going to happen and that's the charm of the lead character in this silent film that's periodically funny and ultimately poignant. I 100% enjoyed the film like I had never before and it's for that experience I give it a full 10. I'm gonna think about it days and kaybe weeks ahead and would highly recommend my women friends to give it a try so that I can know if the idea of liking the film is mutual.

The Bra, directed by Veit Helmer, is a silent, whimsical fable that feels like a gentle homage to the cinema of Jacques Tati. With no dialogue, the film relies entirely on visual humor, expressive acting, and meticulous attention to detail - trademarks of Tati's work in films like Playtime and Monsieur Hulot's Holiday.
Set in a small Azerbaijani village cut by railway tracks, the story follows Nurlan, a lonely train driver, as he searches for the owner of a blue bra caught on his locomotive. Much like Tati's characters, Nurlan moves through a world filled with eccentric figures and absurd situations, creating comedy not through punchlines, but through timing, space, and subtle physical gestures.
However, while Tati's films often satirised modernity and technology, The Bra leans more toward fairytale romance, with an innocence that might feel naïve or old-fashioned to some viewers.
For lovers of silent comedy and those who appreciate cinema as visual poetry, The Bra is a charming, if modest, experience. It's not as sharp or socially critical as Tati, but it shares his affection for the quiet comedy of everyday life.

"Wish" Walter Matthau type searches for the owner of a bra in this practically pantomimed Cinderella-esque movie set in Eurasia.
The cinematography is beautiful in this story of a lonely train engineer. While it is interesting to see the scenery and cultural differences in Azerbaijan, ultimately the movie devolves into desperation and unseemly circumstances. It's a tragic comedy with a bit of humanity.
I know nothing of the director or actors in this movie; I came across it in my streaming service and decided to watch it. I was very surprised there was practically no dialogue for ninety minutes.

The Bra (2018), directed by Veit Helmer, is a whimsical and heartfelt film that blends light-hearted comedy with themes of loneliness and human connection. The story follows Nurlan (Predrag 'Miki' Manojlovic), a man trapped in a solitary life, who embarks on an unconventional and adventurous quest to find the owner of a mysterious blue bra he discovers. His search leads him to Baku, where he rents a small room and begins his unusual mission that will ultimately change his life.
Manojlovic brings a quiet charm to his character, playing Nurlan as a man in search of meaning, even through the oddest of circumstances. Paz Vega and Chulpan Khamatova deliver solid performances as the women he encounters along the way, each adding depth to the narrative without overshadowing the central journey. The film's humor is often understated, relying on the absurdity of the quest and the emotional undercurrent of Nurlan's desire to break free from his lonely existence.
Helmer's direction is filled with visual flair, capturing the quirky nature of Nurlan's journey while maintaining an intimate, almost magical realism to the storytelling. The cinematography is soft and nostalgic, often highlighting the simplicity of Nurlan's life and the colorful yet modest world around him. While the plot is inherently strange, the film's pacing keeps the audience engaged, and its whimsical tone balances out the deeper emotional exploration.
The Bra is a unique blend of comedy and drama, offering an exploration of human desire for connection through a peculiar lens. While its premise may seem odd, the film ultimately conveys a message of hope and the surprising paths one can take to escape the confines of isolation.
Rating: 6/10. A quirky, heartfelt film with a unique premise that balances humor and emotion, though it may feel a bit too eccentric for some.

What a clever, delightful, funny, witty film this is. It came out of left field, and stayed centred. I thoroughly enjoyed the viewing experience.
I'm no expert but, I believe there are three 1st with this movie. The first silent movie of the 21st century, the first silent movie in COLOUR, and the first silent movie with no story boards.
I am smiling as I write this little review, that says something. I'll never think of Bra in the same way again, not even in schoolboy French, which raised schoolboy tittilation (french translation for the uninitiated is ARM).
When I hear or see a Bra in the future, I will be transported once more, to a cinematic gem. The cast were fantastic, the direction was brilliant, the cinematography was unbelievable. This movie left me with a warm glow, which I haven't felt in some years
Blockbusters are good for the wallet, movies like this are good for the viewer.

Now, this is a truly worthy film. Creative and spellbinding in it's ability to carry you along the search, without needing to explain using words. Well done, True Film Makers! The themed is focused perfectly without any sidebar distractions and useless banal "action". The main characters were honed nicely so you felt you knew them without any verbal explanation. The different episodes were creatively produced without a sense of repetition. Finally, an awesome ending authentic to the heart of the film. You find yourself immersed in the story as a sidekick to the main character. Worth every minute. I think this film is worthy to be in a film education class.
