“No more 3D CGI please”: ‘Berserk’ Fans Were Scammed Not Once But Twice in Hopes of a Respectable Anime Adaptation
Image
Berserk is a massively popular legacy series that has attracted and captivated millions of fans across generations. Fans have been desperately hoping for an anime adaptation that is worthy of Kentaro Miura’s legendary manga. But each time, they have been met with nothing but disappointment and betrayal.

Guts in a still from Kentaro Miura’s Berserk | Credits: Olm Team Iguchi

First, the fans had to stomach the infamous CGI-heavy Berserk (2016) and Berserk (2017) adaptations. They had turned anime into something else, wherein the essence was being overpowered by how stiff the animation was and its lackluster execution.

There seemed to be no hope for a good, more faithful Berserk adaptation until a group (of alleged fans) brought up an idea to fan-make it in the way they had always wanted to see it be made. The fans can trust fellow fans, right? So they did and donated to the cause,...

Akira
Anime Review: Make a Girl (2025) by Gensho Yasuda
Akira
After its international premiere at TIFF, independent animator Gensho Yasuda‘s first full-length animation “Make a Girl” just got its theatrical release in Japan with Kadokawa, bringing to the attention of the general public the new, incredible heights reached by 3D animation software – even more incredible if one considers that Yasuda is the one and only credited for scriptwriting, direction and animation, taking care of the creative process from beginning to end.

Jujutsu Kaisen Was Robbed: How the Manga's Final Volume Proves the Ending Was Way Too Rushed
Image
Jujutsu Kaisen's manga ending faced criticism, not only for not returning beloved characters like Satoru Gojo, but also because of the switch in the story's tone and the underwhelming participation of many characters in the last chapters. This caused division among fans, who were uncertain if the finale was what Gege Akutami planned from the start and fitting to the story or an overall bad ending. But the release of volumes #29 and #30 confirmed that the final stretch of Jujutsu Kaisen wasn’t bad, just incredibly rushed.

Some of the backlash Gege Akutami received in the last chapters of the manga was due to the downgrade of the art. However, the new manga epilogue and corrections in the final volumes show that Jujutsu Kaisen could have had a much better ending if its author had been given more time.

The Improved Art in Jujutsu Kaisen’s New Volumes Confirms the...

Via Amazon and Reddit, the popular iyashikei anime Girls' Last Tour has left the Prime Video service, meaning fans in the United States no longer have an official means of streaming the series -- as is also the case of Land of the Lustrous, which left the platform on the same day. As of Oct. 6, 2024, Sentai has not announced either series' new destinations.

Anime Studios Have Changed Over The Years For Better or Worse
Image
Japan's animation industry was influenced by Western animation but later became its own source of entertainment worldwide. Despite technological advancements, animators face harsh working conditions and low wages in Japanese anime studios. Criticisms towards anime working conditions have surfaced, prompting a call for stricter labor laws to protect employees.

Japans booming animation industry began around 1917. The early stages of Japanese animation were influenced by Western animation. Many Japanese studios saw Walt Disney Studios as a source of inspiration and competition. It wasnt until after the World War that Japanese animation became a source of entertainment, such as Osamu Tezukas Astro Boy.

Over the years, Japanese animation has gained popularity worldwide with classic anime series like Dragonball Z and Sailor Moon and recent popular shonen titles like One Piece and Naruto. Japanese anime studios put great effort into producing high-quality anime series. However, anime studios have a dark reputation behind this global phenomenon.

Leviathan Release Date: When Will the Steampunk Adventure Anime Premiere? - Main Image

Studio Orange and Netflix announced the Leviathan anime and its release date window. This upcoming anime did not get a trailer, but new screenshots were revealed that give fans more ideas of what to expect.

Leviathan is the latest anime from Orange as the studio has not released any new series since Trigun: Stampede last year.

Anime Studio Orange President: Audience Tolerance Has Changed for CG Shows
Image
Over the last few decades, anime studio Orange has become one of Japan's leading creators in the CG anime scene. According to Eiji Inomoto, Orange's Chief Director and Representative, his team had several major hurdles to overcome before achieving success -- first and foremost, that audiences used to be far less accustomed to CG animation.

Orange opened its doors in 2004; a year when studios were increasingly relying on CG to help facilitate the production of their anime. However, creating a CG anime studio was still relatively risky, given that most only performed contract work for other major studios. Nonetheless, Inomoto believed there were certain things that his team could only achieve effectively by using CG. During a recent interview with Natalie, Inomoto explained why he decided to throw caution to the wind and begin assembling an in-house team to create original productions using CG.

Studio Orange Founder Reflects On Rise Of CG Animation In Anime & Initial Skepticism Of Establishing CG Specialized Studio
Image
In a recent interview with Comic Natalie, studio Orange founder Eiji Inomoto shared his initial doubts on the establishment of a CG specialized animation studio and the remarkable rise of CG animation within the anime industry.

Initially a freelance CG creator in the game industry, Inomoto transitioned to anime with ‘Zoids: Chaotic Century‘ in 1999. He handled all aspects of production for projects like ‘Geneshaft‘ and ‘Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex‘.

His pivotal moment came when he was offered to manage CG for Shoji Kawamori’s ‘Aquarion‘, leading him to establish Orange.

Initial Skepticism:

Reflecting on the early days, Inomoto revealed that he was unsure if such a company could sustain itself as a viable business even with the increasing use of CG in anime.

“At that time, the demand for CG in the anime industry was growing as a way to fill in the gaps that were difficult to handle with traditional animation.

Sometimes it's for a simple reason, such as setting up for a new season or simply waiting for more of the source material to adapt. There are also times when this happens because of unplanned and unexpected reasons, such as studio issues. The worst, however, has to be when an anime ends on an unresolved cliffhanger.

In a best-case scenario, the anime was partly meant as promotional material for the series' source material – typically a manga, light novel, or visual novel – which will answer whatever questions fans are left with. In the worst case, the audience is just left to question and guess what could possibly happen next.

Stars Align

Stars Align is an original sports anime that suffers from unresolved drama. It begins with a simple premise, following a high school club under threat of disbandment due to unsatisfactory performance.

10 Great Modern Fantasy Anime (That Aren't Isekai)
Image
To say isekai has dominated the fantasy genre for anime is an understatement. Almost every new release nowadays for fantasy fans involves some form of reincarnation into another world. While there’s a novelty in the concept of going into another world, it often boils down to a gimmick that inevitably makes the protagonist overpowered.

To contrast, there are numerous traditional fantasy anime that make for a refreshing return to form for the genre. This isn’t to say that all isekai anime is bad — however, the reincarnation concept occasionally hampers the story more than it helps. On the contrary, a few fantasy series get to focus on the meatier aspects of their world and characters without distraction.

Updated on June 5, 2023 by Ajay Aravind: Although shonen is often employed as the face of anime, it's hardly the only genre out there. In fact,...

Trigun Stampede's Knives Finally Lives Up to His Name After Big Powerup
Image
Vash The Stampede and his brother Knives encounter each other faster than viewers expected in Trigun Stampede, and the evil brother's attacks make him much more fearsome than the previous anime ever did. The 90s anime aired on Adult Swim and amassed numerous fans with its intense post-apocalyptic sci-fi western action and goofy but incredibly competent protagonist, Vash The Stampede. With the Madhouse production of the anime ending after 26 episodes, fans of the series have awaited a new adaptation that follows more closely to Yasuhiro Nightow's manga Trigun Maximum. So far, Stampede is just that.

As soon as the new Trigun anime was announced, it became one of the most anticipated anime coming out in 2023. Stampede wastes no time setting itself apart from Madhouse's adaptation, especially in establishing the series' main antagonist, Millions Knives. First appearing in a cloak, seemingly made with countless tiny pieces of metal, Knives enters...

Utena, la chica revolucionaria (1997)
Best Queer Anime
Utena, la chica revolucionaria (1997)
Diverse storytelling is one of anime’s most appealing qualities. Want a show about superheroes? There’s a series for you. Ninja? You, too. Demon slayers? Yup. Not interested in action or horror? Don’t worry. You can find series about high school volleyball teams, people who transmigrate to another world, and workplace romance. It’s not an exaggeration to say that there’s an anime for everyone, no matter their tastes or preferences.

Given the wide variety of stories, there’s a lot of anime about Lbgtq people and the queer experience. To be clear, anime has more than its fair share of problematic portrayals such as uninterrogated crossdressing tropes, unchallenged homophobia and transphobia, and comedy at the expense of a queer character. But these things are hardly unique to anime, unfortunately. Despite these shortcomings, the format does have great series exploring the LGBTQ experience in different contexts and...
