Small town police commissioner Elisabeth hates her job but hangs on. The violent death of popular singer Manolis confronts her with his sister Rita. As the case unravels both women are able to complement each other in changing their fate.

In a small eel-farming town in the west of Greece, two women live solitary lives while dreaming of getting away. Elisabeth is a once-ambitious policewoman forced to relocate from Athens ten years ago and now living a joyless, hung-over life; Rita is the quiet, mysterious sister of a lounge singer in the local disco. When a sudden death upsets the town and turns the local community upside-down, the two women who had been ignoring each other's existence begin drifting towards each other. Because she is 'uncooperative' with her superiors during an operation in Athens, policewoman Elisabeth is transferred to the desolate fishing village of Mesolongi in western Greece. Years later, her life is in ruins: she drinks and argues too much, sometimes with her son Dimitris, sometimes with her lover Vassilis, a married doctor. Rita also lives in the village and keeps her head above water by gutting eels in the fish factory. Rita has long wanted to get away from here and her broken memories. But her manipulative brother Manolis - a big name in Mesolongi thanks to his discotheque - keeps preventing her from doing so. He skilfully convinces Rita that she can't leave as long as her demented mother needs her. After a drug-fueled night in which Manolis insults the whole village from the stage of his club with an abusive song, he is found hanging on the beach by an iron chain. Elisabeth has to find out who is responsible for the murder, and Rita, whom she has intuitively avoided until now, seems to know something. It soon becomes clear that the women have more in common than they would like.
