2025's "War of the Worlds" has become a hit on Prime Video after debuting on July 30 and shooting straight to the top of the streamer's charts. Why? I don't know. But that's what happened and now we're in the position of having to parse this critically-panned sci-fi rehash to figure out what in the heck is going on.
You might think I'm being a tad harsh. After all, this movie did dominate the Prime Video charts. But wait until you hear about the actual content of this film, which takes place entirely on Ice Cube's desktop. That is, much like 2018's "Searching," which also unfolded entirely on computer screens, "War of the Worlds" is confined to the laptop of Mr. Cube's Homeland Security analyst Will Radford, who witnesses the invasion of Earth by alien creatures entirely via low-res videos and a network of surveillance cameras. This might sound like an interesting approach,...

War of the Worlds, a story of aliens invading planet Earth, has long had a hold on the Western moviegoing public. Now there's a new version, and it's proving controversial to say the least, but it's still doing very well in terms of audience.
Ice Cube's new version of War of the Worlds, which is from the producers of Searching and takes place entirely on one screen, has been met with utter derision from critics. Some say it amounts to little more than an advert for Amazon, the company who made it, and others are saying Ice Cube's acting skills just aren't up to scratch.
The Telegraph, for example, gave it one star and a scathing review. “It is silly, shoddy and features far too much of rapper-turned-leading man Ice Cube staring at a computer screen while looking as if he’s working through a reasonably urgent digestive ailment,...

In 1938, Orson Welles hosted a radio version of H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds” that reportedly sent listeners into a panic by treating the alien invasion as a breaking news broadcast. Skip forward to today, and a witless, straight-to-streaming adaptation of Wells’ novel seems highly unlikely to alarm anybody, confining the global takeover by aggressive extraterrestrial tripods to one man’s computer desktop as it does.
“War of the Worlds” marks the latest — and least convincing — screenlife thriller from “Searching” producer Timur Bekmambetov (this one clumsily orchestrated by VFX pro and frequent Eminem music video director Rich Lee). The project might be scarier if the company that’s releasing it, Amazon, hadn’t already achieved world domination. Even with a Prime subscription, you have to sit through two minutes of ads to watch 90 more of what amounts to a feature-length commercial for all things Amazon.

The classic sci-fi story War Of The Worlds is now a cyber thriller starring Ice Cube. Also: aliens that eat data? It’s on Prime Video next week.
Update 30th July 2025: War Of The Worlds is now on Prime Video in the UK, and if you’re subscribed you need to see it. Good heavens above. We’ve also written a review.
Our original story follows…
25th July 2025: No one would have believed in the first years of the 21st century that someone would turn War Of The Worlds into a cyber-thriller. But here we are, in 2025, with another adaptation of Hg Wells’ 1898 novel, this time starring Ice Cube as a data analyst working for the US government. Peering into his computer, Mr Cube’s expert realises that Earth’s data is being harvested… by extra-terrestrial invaders? That seems to be the premise, anyway.

H.G. Wells’ War of the Worlds is getting a screenlife makeover — and Ice Cube is at the center of it. Premiering globally on Prime Video July 30, the new modern-day reboot of the sci-fi classic comes from producers Patrick Aiello and Timur Bekmambetov, with a twist that’s very 2025: the story unfolds through the digital devices we use every day. Think alien invasion meets mass surveillance, told through smartphones, laptops, and security feeds — a visual language designed to feel disturbingly real. You mean we can't even trust TikTok? Since when?!
Directed by Rich Lee, this War of the Worlds follows Will Radford (Ice Cube), a Homeland Security cyber-security analyst who monitors threats via a vast surveillance network. But when an attack by an unknown entity hits, Will is forced to question everything he knows — including what the government might be hiding from him… and the rest of the world.

There’s no such thing as “too much” in Montreal, but Fantasia Fest is long no matter how you slice it. Running from July 16 to August 3, the annual genre event in Québec celebrates its 29th edition this year — though it used to cover even more of the calendar.
The beloved summer film festival began in 1996 as a means of connecting Canadian cinephiles with cutting-edge films from the Asian market. Back then, audiences had several years of movies to catch up on, but now, Fantasia fuels almost three weeks of programming with stories curated from around the globe.
“Genre” filmmaking covers any highly stylized cinematic work that plays on specific tropes from sci-fi, horror, fantasy — you name it. Fantasia lures all kinds of artistic voices into its purple-hued embrace, presenting its own world premieres alongside top titles that previously played SXSW, Sundance, Tribeca, FrightFest, Sitges, and Overlook. There’s a specific texture to art made during the early days of the pandemic, a kind of digital amber preserving the anxiety and isolation of March 2020. Don’t Log Off, which arrives on VOD today, July 15, 2025, is a direct artifact of that moment.
The film opens on a scene familiar to anyone who weathered that first lockdown: a group of college friends attempting connection through a screen for a surprise birthday party. The grainy webcams, the awkward banter, the feeling of being together while being miles apart—it’s all there. The movie sets its hook when the birthday girl, Sam, steps away from her laptop to answer the door.
She never returns. Her camera keeps streaming her empty room, a silent testament to her sudden absence. Her friends, trapped in their respective quarantines, are left staring at their screens in growing horror. What happened to Sam? And how...

As of late, Hulu has been leaning towards grittier stories, with the streaming service consistently spotlighting titles from the sci-fi and horror genres on its top charts. These algorithm-driven rankings have, as usual, been hit or miss: Last month, the trope-heavy yet enjoyable "The Pope's Exorcist" got a lot of love on Hulu, while the third week of May saw the sudden resurgence of an objectively terrible sci-fi flop.
Thankfully, the streaming service's latest Top 10 movies list (in the U.S.) features an intriguing, competently made horror thriller that is currently sitting at #5 (via FlixPatrol). Aneesh Chaganty's "Run," which features Sarah Paulson and Kiera Allen in complex, challenging roles, sets itself apart from comparable genre fare with its frenetic approach to creating terror. Considering how well this 2020 film is doing on Hulu this week, it is safe to say that "Run" will keep you on your toes.

The modern age of technology has enabled filmmakers to tell stories in new, innovative ways. One of the biggest examples can be seen in the ever-growing body of screenlife horror films and thrillers like Unfriended, Host, Spree, and Searching. Through a screen-sharing format, the subgenre pulls viewers into a digital landscape, bouncing across video calls, security footage, internet searches, all forms of text messaging, and more to create narratives filled with suspense as their protagonists try to either solve a mystery or escape a killer from the discomfort of their computer.
Oftentimes, these kinds of movies add in a supernatural element to not only up the stakes, but limit technology as a resource as it malfunctions in the presence of the unknown — Bloat, does just that. With award-winning director Pablo Absento at the helm, the film rediscovers an ancient Japanese folklore demon through a present-day possession flick, further highlighting the...

Screenlife filmmaking, the process of telling a cinematic story entirely through characters’ computer screens, is the kind of gimmick that’s usually bad in theory and is worse in practice. There are smart exceptions, but the pandemic year we spent watching mediocre television produced over Zoom and the amount of time many of us are still professionally obligated to spend on video calls is enough to make watching them for pleasure sound like a daunting proposition.
The format is best known for the films “Unfriended” and “Searching,” both of which were produced by Timur Bekmambetov, who has gone all in on Screenlife storytelling. The niche mogul is also behind “LifeHack,” Ronan Corrigan’s directorial debut that tries to give FaceTime screens and Discord servers the “Ocean’s 11” treatment.

Review: Screenlife: a form of visual storytelling told entirely through a computer, phone or tablet screen. Hollywood has already found plenty of success with this found footage offshoot with films like Missing and Searching. Now they’re taking that same concept and giving it more of a supernatural twist. Not that we haven’t also already seen that as well. But hey, lack of originality isn’t always a death knell as it’s really about the execution. So does Bloat manage to excel where others failed? Eh…

The “Screenlife” movie has become a bona fide subgenre here in the horror world, with films including Searching, Missing, and Unfriended paving the way for other movies that uniquely play out their stories entirely on computer screens. Timur Bekmambetov is the producer of all of the above, and he’s launched a new initiative to foster new talents in the screenlife space.
Deadline reports this week that Bekmambetov has created the Black List-style “Screenlifer” platform, which will “identify, support, and promote screenlife content from emerging filmmakers, and give it exposure to both audiences and industry professionals.”
“Projects that meet the platform’s standards will receive a Black List-style mark of distinction, signifying their alumni status, which Bekmambetov believes will enhance their industry credibility,” Deadline adds. “The best concepts will be published on the project’s website.”

C U Soon (2020) ‘Prime Video’ Review: Mahesh Narayanan Crafts a Completely Immersive Screen Thriller
Filmed and written entirely during the Coronavirus pandemic, the Malayalam film ‘C U Soon’ has been released directly on Amazon Prime Video. This film is about a man named Jimmy (played by Roshan Mathew) who matches Anumol Sebastian (Darshana Rajendran) in an online dating app. Following a shocking turn of events, Anumol, who has started living with Jimmy, leaves his apartment. She sends one last video message which allegedly sounds like a suicide note to him. This promising premise leads to Mahesh Narayanan’s skilled and frequently innovative thriller that unfolds solely on the screens of a desktop or mobile phone, with not even one remote sight of a visual past. It is ‘C U Soon’, one of the most default texts we send that draws the curtains of the narrative.

Natasha Lyonne and Rian Johnson's hit streaming series, Poker Face, is set to return this year. And, well? The list of people they've finagled to guest star in Season 2 is actually unhinged. Like, the list of people who are going to be on this show is truly outrageous and unfathomable to someone like me, a person who does not cast television shows. But if I did? And I managed to pull this off? I'd be screaming it from the rooftop, folks. Because this cast list? It's truly the best of the best of the funniest, most talented people currently working in Hollywood.
And it seems that Lyonne and Johnson recognize that, sending along a note with the press release teasing the series' forthcoming slate of episodes. And though we don't know the exact premiere date yet — all it says is "Spring 2025" — we do know the 12, 60-minute-long episodes will feature Many very,...

In 2023, a thriller came out that took the screenlife genre to a whole new level. Missing tells the twisty story of a teenager tracking down her mother using all the powers of the internet. Every frame of the movie is packed with app interfaces and potential clues — some of which tie into the creative team's earlier films, Searching and Run. Each standalone story is loaded with Easter eggs that reveal a shared universe.
Co-writer and producer Sev Ohanian obviously loves mysteries, but he also can't help spoiling them. Missing, Searching, and Run each contain glimpses of the solutions to their own enigmas, as well as proof of how their stories interlock. Eagle-eyed fans can assemble Ohanian's tantalizing puzzle, and perhaps uncover hints of what the future holds for this clever creator and his team.

The 2023 cyber thriller Missing tells the twisty tale of a teenager investigating her mother's disappearance using the power of the internet. The movie interrogates the ways in which personal bias can make even the most innocent things seem sinister and obscure truths that hide in plain sight. Case in point: the instant message the heroine receives halfway through the movie, telling her what really happened to her mother — sent by Missing producer Sev Ohanian.
With the rise of Covid-19, many filmmakers have tried their hand at the screenlife genre, in which the drama plays out entirely on device screens and computer monitors. Missing is one of the most ambitious examples, amounting to a mosaic of overlaid applications from a dizzying array of recognizable brands. These busy compositions enabled Sev Ohanian to sneak a major spoiler into his movie where only the most sharp-eyed fans will catch it.

Blumhouse Productions has created a name for itself in the movie industry by releasing high-quality, popular horror films. Unfortunately, 2024 came with a mixed offering and one title set an unfortunate event that seems to change thanks to streaming.
Blumhouse premiered several horror titles in 2024, including the critically acclaimed remake Speak No Evil, with an 83% approval rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but also Imaginary, with an unfortunate 24% approval score, and Afraid, which has a 22% score from the critics. Afraid set a series of unfortunate records for Blumhouse, but it proved to be a success on streaming following its release on Netflix. Now, its success continues, as Afraid ended its first week on the streaming platform in the tenth spot in the U.S. for the week between Nov. 26 and Dec. 1, according to Netflix.

Love Hurts marks the directorial debut of stuntman Jonathan Eusebio, previously the assistant director on notable films such as 300, Black Panther, and John Wick. Now, he’s stepping into the spotlight, writing and directing his own film, Love Hurts. The lead actor is Ke Huy Quan, who finally got his big break after receiving much-deserved recognition at the Oscars and Golden Globes. This former child star, known for his roles as Short Round in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and Data in The Goonies, nearly gave up on acting due to the lack of opportunities and constant rejections at auditions. He eventually shifted to working behind the scenes as a choreographer. Hollywood’s lack of inclusivity for Asian male actors at the time contributed to his struggle. However, Ke Huy Quan was inspired to return to acting during the “Asian August” of 2018, when films like Searching and...

Meta has put its generative AI video system in the hands of some Hollywood filmmakers — hoping to build goodwill with the industry and gather feedback on how to improve the tool.
The tech giant announced Thursday that it has been working with horror studio Blumhouse and select creators as part of a pilot program for Movie Gen, its generative-ai video models. The company said it will continue to expand the program in 2025.
Meta earlier this month unveiled Meta Movie Gen, a suite of AI models that can use text inputs to produce realistic-looking videos as well as edit existing videos. Movie Gen can generate video clips up to 16 seconds in 1080p HD format (at 16 frames per second) with corresponding audio tracks. Movie Gen will be “coming to Instagram” in 2025, according to Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg. Before its wide release, the company is working with filmmakers and creators to integrate their...

In 2018, Searching left everyone's jaws dropped on the floor as it delivered a twisty mystery through a computer screen. The novel online found-footage format was one of the major draws of the John Cho-led techno-thriller, but Searching's spiritual sequel, Missing, didn't gain nearly enough traction in 2023. Co-written by Aneesh Chaganty, who directed the former film, Missing has been criticized for rehashing the same devices and themes of its predecessor, and to a certain extent, it does. However, with tech-savvy 18-year-old June played by Storm Reid at the helm, the new thriller still feels fresh in its more updated approach to its technology, story, and trends leading us into a visceral roller-coaster of emotion and crime.

The internet has become a dark place that has made each one of us live a very lonesome double life. I mean, living a life based on the validation of others—basking in glory or facing relentless trolling over even the slightest mistake on the internet—has become the new social norm, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with. Netflix’s new original Ctrl (2024) explores how the internet is slowly killing us and how tech moguls are smoothly monetizing our insecurities, trying to take absolute control of our lives based on our digital footprints.
Directed by Vikramaditya Motwane, who co-wrote the script with Avinash Sampath and Sumukhi Suresh, Ctrl (2024) is a dark film that explores how the lives of an influencer couple—Nella and Joe—is thrown into chaos when Joe cheats on Nella, prompting her to use an AI app to erase him from her life.

I’ve watched my fair share of cyberhorror films and, for the most part, enjoyed them for their newness and zeal. Vikramaditya Motwane’s Ctrl is certainly an ambitious film. There’s no denying that it’s got something that urges you as a viewer to keep watching. Ctrl tells the story of Nella Awasthi and her boyfriend Joe, who’ve become famous thanks to their relationship being a tool for their income. The perfect life of this seemingly impeccable couple is shattered when Nella tries to surprise Joe for their 5th anniversary and instead finds him kissing another girl. Nella immediately shuts Joe out. However, wild things start happening when Nella installs a new app to erase his memory from her life forever.
First things first, is Ctrl worth your time at all? I’d say definitely. Some editing would’ve definitely done it some good though, but, having said that,...
