Exclusive: Two-time Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Ryan Coogler is partnering with the Armenian Film Society to honor his longtime business partner, prolific producer Sev Ohanian, with an induction into the Armenian Film Hall of Fame.

The honor will be presented on the concluding day of the 2025 Armenian Film Festival held in Los Angeles from Sept. 3-7, during the Afs Gala at Vertigo Event Venue in Glendale, Calif. celebrating a decade of the nonprofit’s work. 2025's "War of the Worlds" has become a hit on Prime Video after debuting on July 30 and shooting straight to the top of the streamer's charts. Why? I don't know. But that's what happened and now we're in the position of having to parse this critically-panned sci-fi rehash to figure out what in the heck is going on.

You might think I'm being a tad harsh. After all, this movie did dominate the Prime Video charts. But wait until you hear about the actual content of this film, which takes place entirely on Ice Cube's desktop. War of the Worlds, a story of aliens invading planet Earth, has long had a hold on the Western moviegoing public. Now there's a new version, and it's proving controversial to say the least, but it's still doing very well in terms of audience.

Ice Cube's new version of War of the Worlds, which is from the producers of Searching and takes place entirely on one screen, has been met with utter derision from critics. Some say it amounts to little more than an advert for Amazon, the company who made it, and others are saying Ice Cube's acting skills just aren't up to scratch.

In 1938, Orson Welles hosted a radio version of H.G. Wells’ “War of the Worlds” that reportedly sent listeners into a panic by treating the alien invasion as a breaking news broadcast. Skip forward to today, and a witless, straight-to-streaming adaptation of Wells’ novel seems highly unlikely to alarm anybody, confining the global takeover by aggressive extraterrestrial tripods to one man’s computer desktop as it does.

“War of the Worlds” marks the latest — and least convincing — screenlife thriller from “Searching” producer Timur Bekmambetov (this one clumsily orchestrated by VFX pro and frequent Eminem music video director Rich Lee). The project might be scarier if the company that’s releasing it, Amazon, hadn’t already achieved world domination. Even with a Prime subscription, you have to sit through two minutes of ads to watch 90 more of what amounts to a feature-length commercial for all things Amazon.

But here we are, in 2025, with another adaptation of Hg Wells’ 1898 novel, this time starring Ice Cube as a data analyst working for the US government. Peering into his computer, Mr Cube’s expert realises that Earth’s data is being harvested… by extra-terrestrial invaders? That seems to be the premise, anyway.

Exclusive: Ryan Coogler’s Proximity Media has parted ways with executives Kalia King, Hannah Levy, and Rebecca Cho, Deadline has learned.

Sources close to the company said these execs’ contracts came to an end and were simply not renewed.

“Team Proximity wishes them the best in their future endeavors,” they said. “After a record-breaking year, the company is excited for what the future holds.”

Cho was with Proximity for nearly four years, serving as Senior Vice President, Film. With the company for around the same amount of time, King worked on the television side as Executive Vice President. Levy was there for a little over two years, serving as Director of Development, Film.

Premiering globally on Prime Video July 30, the new modern-day reboot of the sci-fi classic comes from producers Patrick Aiello and Timur Bekmambetov, with a twist that’s very 2025: the story unfolds through the digital devices we use every day. Think alien invasion meets mass surveillance, told through smartphones, laptops, and security feeds — a visual language designed to feel disturbingly real. You mean we can't even trust TikTok? Directed by Rich Lee, this War of the Worlds follows Will Radford (Ice Cube), a Homeland Security cyber-security analyst who monitors threats via a vast surveillance network. “Six Till Midnight” will mark the film acting debut for Poarch, the Filipino-American platinum-selling singer-songwriter and one of the top TikTok creators with more than 125 million followers and 2 billion music streams. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald, the trio behind Netflix’s hit Cobra Kai, have signed on to write a brand-new Harold & Kumar movie. Hurwitz and Schlossberg will also direct the film, which is being made by Mandate Pictures, now owned by Lionsgate.

This is a full-circle moment for the team. Hurwitz and Schlossberg first launched their Hollywood careers by writing the original 2004 comedy Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, and they made their directing debut with the 2008 sequel Escape from Guantanamo Bay.

It is a full-circle moment for the gentlemen, as their Hollywood career got high thanks to writing the original movie, 2004’s Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, and making their directorial debut with 2008’s Harold & Kumar Escape Guantanamo Bay.

As of late, Hulu has been leaning towards grittier stories, with the streaming service consistently spotlighting titles from the sci-fi and horror genres on its top charts. Screenlife filmmaking, the process of telling a cinematic story entirely through characters’ computer screens, is the kind of gimmick that’s usually bad in theory and is worse in practice. There are smart exceptions, but the pandemic year we spent watching mediocre television produced over Zoom and the amount of time many of us are still professionally obligated to spend on video calls is enough to make watching them for pleasure sound like a daunting proposition.

The format is best known for the films “Unfriended” and “Searching,” both of which were produced by Timur Bekmambetov, who has gone all in on Screenlife storytelling. The “Screenlife” movie has become a bona fide subgenre here in the horror world, with films including Searching, Missing, and Unfriended paving the way for other movies that uniquely play out their stories entirely on computer screens. Timur Bekmambetov is the producer of all of the above, and he’s launched a new initiative to foster new talents in the screenlife space.

In 2023, a thriller came out that took the screenlife genre to a whole new level. Missing tells the twisty story of a teenager tracking down her mother using all the powers of the internet. Every frame of the movie is packed with app interfaces and potential clues — some of which tie into the creative team's earlier films, Searching and Run. As the family races against time to save the boy’s soul, the evil monster inside the child tears the family apart as it seeks to destroy everyone in its path.

Exclusive: Emmy Award nominee Joseph Lee has been cast as a series regular in the Apple TV+ series Neuromancer, a new 10-episode drama based on the award-winning novel of the same name by William Gibson.

He joins the previously announced Callum Turner and Briana Middleton. Lee will portray the character Hideo, who in the novel is a ninja bodyguard.

Created for television by Graham Roland and Jd Dillard, Neuromancer follows a damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case (Turner) who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high-stakes crime with his partner Molly (Middleton), a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes, aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.

A co-production between Skydance Television, Anonymous Content and Apple Studios, Neuromancer will also be produced by Drake’s DreamCrew Entertainment. Roland will serve as showrunner and Dillard is set to direct the pilot episode.

Blumhouse Productions has created a name for itself in the movie industry by releasing high-quality, popular horror films. Unfortunately, 2024 came with a mixed offering and one title set an unfortunate event that seems to change thanks to streaming.

Blumhouse premiered several horror titles in 2024, including the critically acclaimed remake Speak No Evil, with an 83% approval rating from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, but also Imaginary, with an unfortunate 24% approval score, and Afraid, which has a 22% score from the critics. Afraid set a series of unfortunate records for Blumhouse, but it proved to be a success on streaming following its release on Netflix. Now, its success continues, as Afraid ended its first week on the streaming platform in the tenth spot in the U.S. for the week between Nov. 26 and Dec. 1, according to Netflix.

Bekmambetov, who remains repped by WME, most recently wrapped the Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson starring sci-fi feature Mercy for Amazon MGM Studios. Produced by Oscar-nominated producer Charles Roven (Oppenheimer), Mercy is set in the near future when capital crime has increased. The pic follows a detective (Pratt) who is accused of a violent crime and forced to prove his innocence. 

The filmmaker broke through with his supernatural action-adventure feature Night Watch which spawned the sequel Day Watch. His first big Hollywood project was the blockbuster Wanted for Universal. That film starred James McAvoy, Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman, and it grossed $342 million worldwide. He had become smitten with the Screenlife film format by then, and set a five-picture deal for Universal to make films in that low cost format.

Meta has put its generative AI video system in the hands of some Hollywood filmmakers — hoping to build goodwill with the industry and gather feedback on how to improve the tool.

The tech giant announced Thursday that it has been working with horror studio Blumhouse and select creators as part of a pilot program for Movie Gen, its generative-ai video models. The company said it will continue to expand the program in 2025.

Meta earlier this month unveiled Meta Movie Gen, a suite of AI models that can use text inputs to produce realistic-looking videos as well as edit existing videos. Movie Gen can generate video clips up to 16 seconds in 1080p HD format (at 16 frames per second) with corresponding audio tracks. In 2018, Searching left everyone's jaws dropped on the floor as it delivered a twisty mystery through a computer screen. The novel online found-footage format was one of the major draws of the John Cho-led techno-thriller, but Searching's spiritual sequel, Missing, didn't gain nearly enough traction in 2023. Co-written by Aneesh Chaganty, who directed the former film, Missing has been criticized for rehashing the same devices and themes of its predecessor, and to a certain extent, it does. However, with tech-savvy 18-year-old June played by Storm Reid at the helm, the new thriller still feels fresh in its more updated approach to its technology, story, and trends leading us into a visceral roller-coaster of emotion and crime.

I’ve watched my fair share of cyberhorror films and, for the most part, enjoyed them for their newness and zeal. Vikramaditya Motwane’s Ctrl is certainly an ambitious film. There’s no denying that it’s got something that urges you as a viewer to keep watching. Ctrl tells the story of Nella Awasthi and her boyfriend Joe, who’ve become famous thanks to their relationship being a tool for their income. The perfect life of this seemingly impeccable couple is shattered when Nella tries to surprise Joe for their 5th anniversary and instead finds him kissing another girl. Nella immediately shuts Joe out. However, wild things start happening when Nella installs a new app to erase his memory from her life forever.
