10 best fantasy books to read, according to George R.R. Martin
Image
Fantasy fans know author George R.R. Martin is an icon in the genre space, but what books in the genre does he recommend? Well, we now have an answer.

Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels were adapted into HBO's mega success Game of Thrones, which alone made him a household name. While fans are still eagerly awaiting The Winds of Winter, the beloved author discussed his own influences in the genre. It’s no surprise that his works may influence others, but he had to draw from his own favorites in the fantasy world, too.

On GoodReads, Martin shared his own favorites, as reported by Express, noting on...

George R.R. Martin wants you to read Joe Abercrombie's fantasy books
Image
The other month, A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin sat down with fellow author Joe Abercrombie as part of Abercrombie's tour promoting his new book The Devils. The Devils is a Suicide Squad-esque story about a group of monsters undertake a dangerous mission at the behest of a young child pope. It's funny, gritty and grimdark, something that Abercrombie's books have become known for.

What exactly is "grimdark?" Martin himself probed around the edges of the definition while speaking with Abercrombie. "You've read [my] books, so you know I occasionally kill a character, and or have dark things, and you became instantly known for doing something similar, expect moreso," he said. "You were dubbed 'the king of grimdark.' And I had never heard the term 'grimdark,' but evidently I inspired it somehow. But you were grimmer and darker than I was, I think."

So grimdark,...

Visual Effects Society Awards: ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ topples ‘Dune: Part Two’ for top prize
Image
The Visual Effects Society just made the Oscar race for Best Visual Effects a lot more interesting, crowning Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes as its choice for top Photoreal Feature Tuesday night at the 23rd Annual Ves Awards. The Apes win came over a field that included heavy Academy Awards favorite Dune: Part Two along with Better Man, Mufasa: The Lion King, and Twisters.

However, the Ves feature award turned out not to be such an accurate predictor of the Oscar winner a year ago, with The Creator winning at Ves, while Godzilla Minus One snared visual effects at the Academy Awards. Avatar: The Way of Water took home both in 2023.

The Apes victory was especially surprising in that it was the film’s only win of the night, while Dune otherwise dominated in tallying four wins, the most of any photoreal feature. Those included triumphs for Best Environment,...

‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,’ ‘Dune: Part Two’ Top Visual Effects Society Awards
Image
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” won Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature, the top feature prize at the 23rd Annual Visual Effects Society Awards and the one that most closely corresponds to the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. The celebration of achievement in visual effects took place on Tuesday in Los Angeles.

The sci-fi primate sequel beat “Dune: Part Two,” which went into the evening with the most nominations (seven) and emerged with the most wins (four): Outstanding Achievement in a Photoreal Feature, Outstanding CG Cinematography, Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal Feature and Outstanding Compositing & Lighting in a Feature.

The victory for “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” does not necessarily make the film a frontrunner in the Oscars’ visual-effects race. Over the 22 years of Ves Awards, the winner went on to receive the Oscar 12 times, but the two groups have only matched three times in the last 10 years.

2025 Ves Winners Include ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,’ ‘Dune: Part Two,’ and ‘The Wild Robot’
Image
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” won the top VFX prize for Best Photoreal Feature at the 23rd annual Visual Effects Society Awards, held February 11 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel and hosted by The Sklar Brothers (“What We Do in the Shadows”). This marks the fourth Ves win for the “Apes” franchise and Wētā FX, which also took home the character award for the Robbie Williams CG chimp from “Better Man.”

But “Dune: Part Two” bolstered its status as the VFX Oscar frontrunner for Dneg by grabbing the most live-action awards with four: Oscar-nominated Greig Fraser’s CG cinematography for Arrakis, the Arrakeen Basin environment, simulations for atomic explosions and wormriding, and compositing and lighting.

However, DreamWorks’ “The Wild Robot” earned top animated film honors and also won four awards. “Civil War,” meanwhile, won the supporting VFX prize for Framestore.

“Shōgun” was named Best Photoreal Episode and snagged three...

‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ Takes Top VFX Society Award; ‘Dune 2’ Claims Three Trophies as Ves Spreads the Wealth
Image
“Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” won the top Visual Effects Society Award for outstanding VFX in a photoreal feature at the 23rd Visual Effects Society Awards. Yet Tuesday at the Beverly Hilton, the Society spread the wealth, awarding three trophies, the most in the live-action feature categories, to “Dune: Part Two.”

In “Kingdom,” VFX studio Weta FX led by its production VFX supervisor Erik Winquist worked to advance the realism of its emotive apes in areas such as facial animation and muscle simulation, while placing them in environments including rapids and a great flood.

The sequel to 2021’s VFX Oscar and top Ves winner “Dune”, which again features key work by Dneg led by production VFX supervisor Paul Lambert, collected prizes in the categories for CG cinematography, for the Arrakeen Basin; effects simulation, for the atomic explosions and wormriding; and compositing and lighting, for wormriding, geidi prime, and the final battle.

Ves Awards: ‘Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’ Takes Top Film Prize As ‘Dune: Part Two’ & ‘Wild Robot’ Lead With Four Each; ‘Shōgun’ & ‘Penguin’ Pace TV – Full List
Image
It was a rather curious night at the 23rd Ves Awards, which were handed out Tuesday at the Beverly Hilton.

The Visual Effects Society knelt before The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, handing it the marquee prize for Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature — but it was the lone win on six nominations for the 10th film in the venerable franchise.

The bigger winners with four apiece were Dune: Part Two, which came into the night with a leading seven nominations, and The Wild Robot, hot off dominating the Annie Awards over the weekend.

That raises a question: Which film has the inside track for the Oscar next month?

Well, the Ves Awards and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences haven’t followed the same script much during the past decade-plus, with only five of the Visual Effects Society’s marquee winners since 2013 going on to score the FX Oscar.

‘Dune: Part Two’ Leads Visual Effects Society Nominations
Image
“Dune: Part Two” led all films in nominations for the 233 annual Ves Awards, the Visual Effects Society announced on Tuesday. Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic received seven nominations in the Ves Awards’ eight non-animated feature film categories, followed by “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” with six, “Better Man” with four and “Mufasa: The Lion King” with three.

In the Outstanding Visual Effects in a Photoreal Feature category, the category that corresponds most closely to Best Visual Effects at the Oscars, the nominees were “Better Man,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” “Mufasa: The Lion King” and “Twisters.”

All 10 of the films on the Oscars’ Best Visual Effects shortlist received Ves nominations. In addition to the five nominees in the Ves Outstanding Visual Effects category, “Civil War” and “Gladiator II” received two nominations and “Alien: Romulus,” “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Wicked” each received one.

“He has done more for The Boys than the actual Boys themselves”: One Supe Deserves His Redemption Arc in Season 4 for What He Has Done for the Heroes That’s Hard to Ignore
Image
Spoiler Alert! This article contains spoilers from The Boys Season 4

As a team, The Boys are responsible for finding as much dirt on supes as possible, as a way to keep them in line so that they do not indulge in the powers given to them by Vought. Portraying heroes as an intersection between athletes and celebrities (with earth-shattering powers), The Boys have a very important job in their hands. However, it seems that lately, this job is better done by a super himself than The Boys, as pointed out by a Reddit post.

A-Train on The Boys || Amazon Prime Video

A-Train was the character who set a lot of things in motion for the world of The Boys. He was the reason Hughie got involved in the story, to begin with. However, it seems that the character is having a change of heart, seeing through the product that Vought has made him into,...

The Best Scenes in The Hobbit Trilogy, Ranked
Image
Thanks to the popularity of J.R.R. Tolkien's work and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey became one of the most highly anticipated films of 2012. Although the classic Tolkien book "The Hobbit" is only about 300 pages long, director Peter Jackson managed to squeeze an entire trilogy of films out of the source material. The Lord of the Rings fans still argue about which trilogy is better, but the truth is, The Hobbit offered some of the most unforgettable scenes in the franchise.

Jackson did inevitably deviate from the source material, which some fans scrutinized. These deviations were inevitable, though, especially when stretching three long films out of a 300-page book. Despite the changes, The Hobbit managed to soar to being one of the best trilogies of the 2010s and helped the Middle Earth series earn almost 6 billion Usd in revenue.

Hayden Panettiere says relinquishing custody of daughter to Wladimir Klitschko wasn’t ‘fully’ her decision
Image
Hayden Panettiere said she thought her daughter Kaya was only visiting Ukraine when it became apparent that she would be staying there with her father, Wladimir Klitschko.

The Heroes star opened up about relinquishing custody of Kaya during Wednesday’s (28 September) episode of Red Table Talk hosted by Jada Pinkett Smith, her mother Adrienne Banfield Norris, and guest host Kelly Osbourne.

In 2018, Kaya, who was born in 2014, went to live with her boxer father in Eastern Europe as Panettiere sought treatment for her addiction to alcohol and pills. Panettiere and Klitschko split that same year.

“[Kaya] was almost three and it wasn’t fully my decision,” the actor said. “In fact, I didn’t even know it was happening until she was already over there [Ukraine].”

The Independent has contacted representatives for Klitschko for comment.

Banfield Norris asked the actor: “I thought this was an agreement that you came to that you...

Andor Trailer: The Rebellion Needs All The Heroes It Can Get
Stellan Skarsgård, Forest Whitaker, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Genevieve O'Reilly, Alan Tudyk, Denise Gough, Faye Marsay, Kyle Soller, and Adria Arjona in Andor (2022)
The first teaser trailer for "Andor," the next "Star Wars" series bound for Disney+, showed Diego Luna's Rebel spy, Cassian Andor, looking around the corner at Stormtroopers, saying of the evil Galactic Empire in voiceover, "They're so proud of themselves, so fat and satisfied." Genevieve O'Reilly's Mon Mothma also chimed in to say fearfully, "They're everywhere."

It's how most of us feel on any given day as the shadow of Disney's hegemony as a mass media conglomerate — with umbrellas like Lucasfilm, Marvel, Pixar, and 20th Century Studios — grows larger and threatens to consume everything and everyone we know and love. But enough about that; you're here to see...
