‘Rude Dog and the Dweebs': ’80s Kids Show to Get Reboot as an Adult Animated Series (Exclusive)
Rob Paulsen at an event for Jimmy Neutron: el niño genio (2001)
Nic Izzi of Red20 announced on Thursday that he is developing a new version of the 1980s animated kids show “Rude Dog and the Dweebs,” which is being reimagined as an adult animated series.

The character, created by Brad McMahon in the 1980s, originated as a mascot for Sun Sportswear. In 1989, he got his own animated series from Marvel Productions and was part of the CBS Saturday morning line-up. Rob Paulsen, who voiced Yakko on “Animaniacs” and Pinky on “Pinky and the Brain,” provided the voice of the pooch with the rude ‘tude.

“Rude Dog and its brand left an indelible mark on its generation,” Izzi said. ”Rude Dog’s story evolves into a satire about the broken institutions which have left behind the working class. Audiences have embraced the wide spectrum of adult animation, from joke-heavy comedies to sophisticated tales of reconstruction, which is exactly the vibe Rude Dog evokes.

Spooky S*#t to Watch on All Hallows' Eve
Sarah Snook
We're not going to say these are the best horror flicks to watch, ever.

But we are gonna say there are a bunch of random streaming spooks with which to busy ourselves this pandemic-riddled All Hallow's Eve. We've checked many out for you here -- but are you like me, thinking there isn't really a such thing as a "scary" movie?

Anyhoodles, instead of sitting around feeling sorry for ourselves with nothing to do, we can sit around feeling sorry for ourselves and watch some creepy shit. Now, in no particular order:

Jessabelle (Hulu) - 2014

Just as they are about to start a new life together, Jesse (Sarah Snook) and her boyfriend get into a hardcore car accident, killing him, crippling her.

Moving in with her estranged father to recover back "home," Jesse encounters a lingering, dark spirit.

Is this entity the tormenting or the tormented? And what does it...

‘Bill & Ted Face the Music’ Tops Multiple VOD Charts as Chadwick Boseman Films Soar
Image
The Premium VOD debut of United Artists’ “Bill & Ted Face the Music” topped charts from the moment it debuted August 28. As a mid-budget title that’s thriving at $19.99, it could be as important as “Tenet” in determining the shape of movie distribution. “Bill & Ted” didn’t see much theatrical play, but given its day-and-date debut it also didn’t have the option. About 1,000 independent theaters did play the title, where by our estimate it grossed around $1.1 million, or around $1,000 per theater.

That’s not a lot, but it’s better than Searchlight’s theater-only flop “The Personal History of David Copperfield.” Based on those two performances, UA made the right move: Searchlight devoted marketing spend to a disappointheatrical release that now must wait until November before it can play VOD.

“Bill & Ted” was first on all three possible charts. “Fatima” (Picturehouse), the other new PVOD entry, appeared on two.

Crazy New Horror Movie Has Netflix Users Freaking Out
As cinemas continue to struggle due to Covid-19, Netflix has become the main way for many people to watch movies this year. This has been a big win for smaller titles, in particular, as social media impact and word-of-mouth is leading to some of these projects getting a lot more exposure than they normally would have, and the latest buzzy pic is David Marmor’s awesome horror movie 1Br.

For those unfamiliar, the film follows a young woman named Sarah who moves into a Los Angeles apartment complex, only to find that the residents living there aren’t quite what they appear to be. As the plot synopsis outlines:

Unable to sleep, tormented by strange noises and threatening notes, her new life quickly starts to unravel. By the time she learns the horrifying truth, it’s too late. Caught in a waking nightmare, Sarah must find the strength to hold onto her crumbling sanity…...

A Very Overlooked Horror Movie Is Finding Lots Of Love On Netflix Today
Image
When it comes to horror films, Netflix usually has something for everyone. Be it stone cold classics, undiscovered gems, hot new titles or movies that are worth a second look, there’s a lot to dig into from the beloved genre. But what’s particularly great about the streaming site it its ability to shine a light on those horror efforts that may’ve passed you by due to a limited theatrical release or even no theatrical release at all.

Such is the case with 1Br. Arriving on the platform last week without much buzz, this excellent horror movie premiered back in April – digitally, of course, given the current pandemic – and didn’t find too big of an audience. And that’s despite some excellent reviews, with its Rotten Tomatoes score currently sitting at 88%. However, now that it’s on Netflix, it seems to be attracting a much larger crowd and as of today,...

Naomi Grossman and Nicole Brydon Bloom in 1BR (2019)

The feature-length debut of writer/director David Marmor, 1Br is out now on digital platforms from Dark Sky Films, and we caught up with Marmor in our latest Q&a feature to discuss the film's timely themes of isolation and longing for community, working with Nicole Brydon Bloom and Naomi Grossman, and what he learned from directing his first feature.

Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, and congratulations on 1Br! How and when did you come up with the idea for this film?

David Marmor: The idea really started when I moved to Los Angeles in my early 20s and lived in a building a lot like the one in the movie. I would wave to the same neighbors on the breezeways...

Nicole Brydon Bloom in First Trailer for New Neighbors Horror '1Br'
Naomi Grossman and Nicole Brydon Bloom in 1BR (2019)
"We all, kind of, take care of each other here." Dark Sky Films has unveiled the official trailer for an indie horror film titled 1Br, a reference to "one bedroom" listings for apartments. This premiered at numerous genre festivals last year, including at Fantasia, Beyond Fest, Monsterfest Melbourne, and also the Brooklyn Horror Film Festival. Nicole Brydon Bloom plays Sarah, a young woman trying to escape her painful past who decides to start anew in La, but her neighbors are not what they seem. Also starring Giles Matthey, Taylor Nichols, Alan Blumenfeld, Celeste Sully, Susan Davis, Clayton Hoff, with Earnestine Phillips. This definitely looks creepy as hell, with some big twists hinted at in this trailer. Tread carefully. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for David Marmor's 1Br, direct from Dark Sky's YouTube: After leaving behind a painful past, Sarah (Nicole Brydon Bloom) scores the perfect Hollywood apartment only...

Once the Lease is Signed Sarah is in for the Long Haul with David Marmor's 1Br (out April 24th)
Naomi Grossman and Nicole Brydon Bloom in 1BR (2019)
1Br had its World Premiere in Montreal, in the Summer of 2019; this film fan was there - at Fantasia. Now, 1Br is getting set for a wide Digital release, through Dark Sky Films. A limited theatrical release is unlikely as tragic events unfold worldwide. A film from David Marmor, Sarah (Nicole Brydon Bloom) moves to Los Angeles to pursue her dreams. However, she has picked the wrong apartment as residents reveal themselves to be something sinister. Along with actress Bloom, Giles Matthey (Ford v Ferrari), Naomi Grossman ("American Horror Story"), Taylor Nichols and Alan Blumfeld. A U.S. film poster and trailer are available, ahead of the film's late April release. 1Br is a film that welcomes the viewer in to its cast of characters. At the mid-point of the film, it becomes clear that these characters are in league with each other. Sarah begins to doubt her own mind...

Telluride Horror Show 2019 Review Round-Up: Z and 1Br
This October, the Telluride Horror Show celebrated 10 years of fine horror programming. Held annually in Telluride, Colorado, this film festival prides itself on bringing an eclectic selection of feature films and shorts from the horror genre. In my third consecutive year of attendance, I navigated the programming guide like a veteran and did not sit through one screening that I hated. Here are my thoughts on two heavily psychological terror journeys, Z and 1Br, two of my favorites from the weekend.

Z: I can attest, from personal experience, that parenting is inherently creepy as hell. Children, specifically, are creepy as hell. The entire time you are shepherding this fledgling life you created, you are doubting every decision, overanalyzing every behavior, and unintentionally passing on your own issues. And this is on a good day.

Brandon Christensen's Z takes this already unnerving and relatable foundation and liberally spreads on the layer of an imaginary friend.

Fantasia Film Review: ‘1Br’
The common nostalgia for an idealized simpler time in which tight-knit communities satisfied all personal needs can be warped to serve fascist ideologies, a notion that is not at all lost on “1Br.” In this thriller, a needy, insecure young woman thinks she’s lucked out in being accepted to an apartment complex where everyone is very, very neighborly. But she gradually learns this little utopia is in fact more of a prison — one with a brutal assimilation process, and where a sense of belonging comes at the cost of absolute conformity, or else.

Writer-director David Marmor’s first feature doesn’t make much of this concept’s potential as a timely political metaphor, nor does he maximize his opportunities in such other departments as suspense, character involvement and cinematic style. Still, the premise remains intriguing enough to make “1Br” a qualified success, albeit one whose ideas sometimes cry for...
