Despite being Dutch, so not native German, I would like to state that these series set themselves apart by solid acting, good storytelling, authentically set, very pleasantly paced (1,5 hours each) and on top very nice camera work and production. This is something you won't find so easily. I highly recommend it to those loving this genre; crime stories.
The reason why it's possibly not so popular is because of the language and dialects spoken in this series. I had to watch it with German subtitles, tho this is something one needs to be used to, which Dutch people are.
The appeal to me is the scenery and setting, beautiful landscapes which fulfill their part exceptionally well, not being idolized or romanticized in such a way to become enjoying yet being very realistic nicely authentically portrayed. With excellent cast, plot and acting.
