Speaking at a Disney FYC (For Your Consideration) event for Ahsoka, Christensen was asked about his character, Anakin Skywalker, appearing for Rosario Dawson's Jedi in the World Between Worlds. On this subject, Christensen said that he knew about the World Between Worlds before filming, giving him a greater understanding of the story at hand and the role Anakin would play. This will come as no surprise to some Star Wars fans as Christensen has previously said that he watched the animated series The Clone Wars and Rebels before returning to a galaxy far, far away.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Filoni said that he was cautious not to “devolve into a Star Wars history lesson,” so he opted against including a Force ghost scene of Anakin speaking with his former Padawan. Rather than doing that, Filoni opted for the World Between Worlds as the setting of the duo’s reunion, so rather than writing a Force ghost scene, he set their reunion in the World Between Worlds, which allowed for the Jedi to revisit their experiences together during the Clone Wars. Filoni stated that he was in-part inspired by the dreamlike sequences in Akira Kurosawa’s movie Kagemusha, citing that film as a particular influence on the World Between Worlds sequence.

Ahsoka episode five takes a break from the conflict at hand to take a nostalgic trip down memory lane — one that expands on a major cameo revealed at the end of last week’s episode.

Directed and written by Dave Filoni, the midseason episode picks up right after the major cliffhanger in episode four, in which Hayden Christensen reprised his role as Anakin Skywalker, confronting Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson) in a location that appeared to be the World Between Worlds.

Dressed in black Jedi garments akin to his look in Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of Sith, and de-aged to look like his younger self, this version of Anakin is different from that of a traditional blue Force ghost. While that part isn’t fully explained in the episode, it may have something to do with the World Between Worlds itself, which was first seen in Star Wars Rebels season four.
