Brian Tyree Henry had 10 projects come out in 2018 alone. Widows, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Atlanta Season 2 were just some of the things he was seen in that year. He also snagged his second consecutive Emmy nomination in 2018. He also had time to nab a Tony nomination. In the time since, the accolades have continued. His star-making turn as Alfred/Paper Boi in Atlanta came to an end in 2022, Causeway earned him an Oscar nomination in 2023, and now he could win Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for Apple TV+‘s Dope Thief at the 2025 Emmy Awards in September. In an alternate universe somewhere, four-time Emmy nominee and internationally beloved sweetie pie Pedro Pascal could have spent the better part of the 2010s acting on The CW. As writer, director, and producer Julie Plec once revealed to Entertainment Weekly, the fan favorite actor who's currently headlining "The Last of Us" and "The Mandalorian" actually auditioned for a key role in "The Vampire Diaries" and its spinoff series "The Originals" over a decade ago.
During the glory days of The CW (before its entire programming slate was slam-dunked into the trash), "The Vampire Diaries" rode the bloodsucking trend of the late aughts, delivering a juicy, dramatic, often polarizing teen soap adaptation of L.J. Smith's book series of the same name. The flagship series lasted eight seasons, and midway through its run, it introduced a New Orleans-set spinoff: "The Originals." It's this show that series creator Plec says Pascal auditioned for,...

Four years have gone by since Chris Stuckmann, a movie critic and author with a channel on YouTube that has over 2 million subscribers, signed a deal with Paper Street Pictures to write and direct the mystery horror film Shelby Oaks. With filming of The Boys season 5 wrapped, focus is now on the next spinoff series in the works. It’s all about Vought Rising.
Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash will lead The Boys prequel series, bringing Soldier Boy and Stormfront back into the mix. As we know, both of these characters were around in the 1940s and 1950s, allowing for a prequel series about the growth of Vought International.
Like The Boys and its spinoff Gen V, the show needs more than two actors to run the series. Now that Vought Rising production is getting ready to start, we get to hear of more joining the cast.

Glen Powell may be closing the door on ever joining the ranks of superpowered heroes in the Marvel or DC universes.
In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, the Top Gun: Maverick and Twisters star revealed he's not particularly drawn to roles that involve capes, cosmic powers, or mutant abilities.

The Old Guard 2, the sequel to the Covid-era Netflix streaming hit, continues to waste our time in more ways than one. The action is dull — especially when it involves the actors — and only rises to “acceptable” when the stunt team takes over.
The script, particularly the dialogue, is yawn-inducing, making me grateful I’m not immortal. I can’t imagine watching this intellectual property get recycled for centuries. Then again, maybe it can be — since the writers have conveniently discovered a new storytelling device to write themselves out of any corner.
As Conan O’Brien jokes on his podcast, most superhero movies open a portal whenever they need one. In The Old Guard 2, immortality is traded like playing cards. Sometimes you have it, sometimes you don’t. It’s not a power—it’s a vibe.

Before you watch Charlize Theron (Mad Max: Fury Road) lead a star-studded ensemble when The Old Guard 2arrives on Netflix next month, listen to the sounds of sacrifice in Collider’s exclusive reveal of one of the main tunes from the film’s score. Aptly titled “Sacrifice,” the single is the first to come from the movie’s soundtrack, which was co-scored by Ruth Barrett and Steffen Thum. The composition in question fully leans into the goosebump-inducing powers that only a full orchestra can provide, as rousing strings drive the piece forward with plenty of emotion, and a perfectly placed timpani highlights the theme’s building intensity.
Giving some insight into the vision that went into this specific track, Barrett and Thum said:

There was a time when Uma Thurman simply couldn’t stay away from action movies. Titles like Pulp Fiction and Batman & Robin saw her at the center of the high-octane drama, but she’d solidified herself as a genre icon thanks to her appearance in Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill series. Following the second movie’s arrival and theatrical success, Thurman put down her katana and changed lanes in an effort to seek out roles that were unlike the ones she had become so known for. Dominique Thorne’s Ironheart Journey Began With A Failed Black Panther Audition(Photo Credit –Instagram)
Before Ironheart, Dominique Thorne had her eye on another Marvel role, Shuri in Black Panther. She came close, too. But in the end, the role went to someone else. It was a tough break, but Thorne didn’t sulk; she shifted gears and years later became Marvel’s Ironheart.
From Failed Shuri Audition To MCU’s Rising Star
Dominique Thorne first crossed paths with the MCU when she auditioned for Shuri, Wakanda’s tech genius and fan favorite. She didn’t land the part, but she didn’t sit around sulking either. She doubled down on the grind, hit the books hard, and stayed locked in on her goals.
That grind paid off. Soon, she was racking up screen time in Oscar-caliber films like If Beale Street Could Talk and Judas and the Black Messiah.

Dominique Thorne made her live-action Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as Riri Williams in 2022's "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" and left us wanting an "Ironheart" series right there and then. What with everything we know about "Ironheart," the show should prove to be worth the wait, too. With executive producer Ryan Coogler (who also directed the first two "Black Panther" movies) fresh off his bloody vampire masterclass "Sinners" and the MCU itself on the upswing following the emotional gut punch of "Thunderbolts*," the hype train of "Ironheart" is drawn by two capable locomotives ... and that's before you take into account the amount of talent attached.
Series creator Chinaka Hodge was a staff writer on AMC's dystopian sci-fi train thriller "Snowpiercer." Directing duties of the six-episode series are shared by Sam Bailey and Angela Barnes ("Mythic Quest," "Atlanta.") On the acting front, Thorne has ample backup from the likes of Anthony Ramos and Alden Ehrenreich.

Bunny drops us into a single, sweltering summer day in a cramped tenement where Bunny (Mo Stark) hustles his way between neighbors, petals of chaos unfurling with every knock on his door. When a routine gig turns deadly, Bunny and his loyal sidekick Dino (Ben Jacobson) must scramble to conceal a corpse while keeping the building’s eclectic inhabitants from spiraling into panic.
As a first feature from Jacobson—who also co-wrote and co-stars—Bunny wears its indie roots on its sleeve, channeling the raw energy of downtown Manhattan’s guerrilla filmmaking past. The Steadicam roves through cluttered hallways and crowded rooms, letting us catch glimpses of tenants juggling petty dramas, impromptu parties and two munchie-addled cops circling like cartoon vultures.
This off-the-cuff ensemble comedy-drama moves at a breathless pace, each long take doubling as a narrative beat: a comedic aside here, a tense hide-and-seek there, all stitched together by a pulsating soundscape of sirens,...

Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament has returned, and as you’ll see from the most profitable films of 2024, a movie’s game doesn’t end at the box office. Rather, its downstream revenues and subsequent home windows must be taken into account. Streaming continues to be a wildcard: While traditional motion picture studios such as Disney, Warner Bros, Sony, Paramount and Universal rely on lucrative pay two and pay three streamer deals to catapult their slates into the black, those streamers who’ve embraced theatrical (specifically Amazon MGM Studios and Apple Original Films) have a clandestine metric as to how they evaluate a movie’s post-cinema success. By traditional studio P&l standards, some of those releases would be considered flops. Given that, Apple and Amazon are excluded from this year’s survey. The Most Valuable Blockbuster series runs later rather than sooner as we gather the best data possible...

Mountainhead, from Succession creator Jesse Armstrong, stars Steve Carell as a billionaire who goes on a trip with his ultra-wealthy friends during an international crisis. The HBO original film, which will air on the channel and stream on Max next month, just got an official teaser trailer that unveils the timely drama with an eerie air of comedy that fans of The Big Short will immediately gravitate towards.
As seen in the official teaser below, Mountainhead stars Carell as Randall, Jason Schwartzman as Souper (Hugo Van Yalk), Cory Michael Smith as Venis, and Ramy Youssef as Jeff. Per the official logline, the story follows a group of billionaire friends that "get together against the backdrop of a rolling international crisis." From the new footage, Mountainhead appears to be tackling a current, not-yet-existent crisis that stems from the companies and platforms owned by billionaires. Ed Skrein didn't appear on "Game of Thrones" for long. The English actor popped up on the HBO series in 2013 during season 3, playing Daario Naharis, a sellsword leader and ally to Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), across just three episodes. By the time season 4 rolled around, the "Game of Thrones" role had been recast, with Dutch actor Michiel Huisman playing Daario instead of Skrein. Huisman stuck with the series for the duration of the character's run, leaving some fans to speculate as to why Skrein was replaced so quickly.
It's not unusual for scheduling conflicts to cause recastings on major ensemble-driven shows, and early reports of Skrein's departure suggested that's what happened. The story was that he chose to prioritize "The Transporter Refueled," the 2015 reboot of Jason Statham's action franchise, but in later interviews, Skrein emphasized that it wasn't actually his decision to leave "Game of Thrones."

A sci-fi thriller about the quest for eternal life is on the way, coming from Barry Jenkins and Glen Powell. More on The Natural Order here.
While it may well have its admirers, there were plenty of people out there who let out a collective sigh of disappointment when Barry Jenkins announced that he was tackling Mufasa, Disney’s big budget prequel to its own live-action remake of The Lion King. For such a feted filmmaker to surrender himself to the cogs and gears of The House of Mouse’s franchise machine seemed like a waste when he could be making beautiful cinema like Moonlight or If Beale Street Could Talk.
Jenkins himself has admitted that the process wasn’t entirely satisfying, even if he has delivered a hit for Disney with Mufasa. Still, it’s a relief to see that for his next project, he’s reverting back to...

Turns out, when you’ve won Best Picture, most of the time, the only place you can go after that high is down.
Opening this weekend at the box office is “Mickey 17,” the first film from director Bong Joon Ho since his film won Best Picture for “Parasite” back in 2019. “Parasite” was something of a unicorn, an international film that crossed all borders and became a $259 million global commercial hit and an awards circuit sensation. Even with Robert Pattinson helping his cause, that’s going to be a tough benchmark to surpass. Warner Bros. is projecting a $40-50 million global opening weekend.
The difference this time is director Bong is working with a major studio, Warner Bros., rather than indie distributor Neon, and “Mickey 17” will open wide on 3,400 screens domestically, whereas “Parasite” at its peak only hit 2,000.
But when a director’s movie wins Best Picture, does their next one perform better?...

Kieran Culkin capped off a dominant Oscar season Sunday, winning Best Supporting Actor for A Real Pain — and ended a streak to boot. Culkin is now the first to win the category without a Best Picture nomination for his film since 2012.
Christopher Plummer was the last one to pull this off when he triumphed for Beginners. His nomination was the only one for the Mike Mills film, and he swept the season. At 82, Plummer became the oldest acting winner at the time, a record that has since been broken by Anthony Hopkins, who was 83 when he won Best Actor for 2020's The Father.
Since Plummer's victory, every Best Supporting Actor winner until now had hailed from a Best Picture nominee. Five of them were in Best Picture winners, including the last three: Troy Kotsur (Coda), Ke Huy Quan (Everything Everywhere All at Once), and Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer).

The 2025 Sundance Film Festival — and perhaps its second-to-last in Park City — has wound down with the annual awards ceremony.
On January 31, jurors presented prizes in the competitive sections, including the U.S. Dramatic Competition, U.S. Documentary Competition, World Cinema Dramatic Competition, World Cinema Documentary Competition, and the Next lineup. Jurors across the sections looked at nearly 90 films representing more than 30 countries and territories.
Hailey Gates’ Iraq war satire, starring Alia Shawkat and produced by (among others) Luca Guadagnino, won the festival’s top award: the Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic competition. The politically charged comedy, which follows an aspiring actress in a military role-playing facility, is still looking for U.S. distribution amid mixed reviews out of Sundance. Meanwhile in that section, Eva Victor’s staggering feature debut “Sorry, Baby,” a startlingly wise and unsentimental depiction of trauma set in American academia, won a Screenwriting prize...

Sony Pictures has finally set a release date for acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky's upcoming movie starring Elvis and Dune: Part Two's Austin Butler. Caught Stealing, which features a star-studded cast alongside the Academy Award-nominated actor, will premiere in theaters on August 29, 2025.
Per Deadline, Aronofsky's film takes the date of Sony and Blumhouse's next Insidious movie, originally set for release this year. Based on Charlie Huston's novel, which the author has adapted for the big screen, Caught Stealing will follow Butler's Hank, a former baseball player whose life has taken a downturn. Now working as a bartender in Manhattan's Lower East Side, Hank's mundane existence is shattered when he crosses paths with some dangerous individuals, plunging him into a perilous fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of 1990s New York City. Fans will be eager to see Aronofsky's vision for Huston's story, which they will not...

For the past dozen years, the eventual Oscar winner for Best Supporting Actor has hailed from a Best Picture nominee. But that streak could finally end this year, based on Gold Derby’s predictions.
Kieran Culkin is the odds-on frontrunner to win Best Supporting Actor for his performance in A Real Pain. He plays Benjamin “Benji” Kaplan, who embarks on a roadtrip through Poland with his cousin, David Kaplan (Jesse Eisenberg), following the death of their grandmother. The Searchlight Pictures film also received a Best Original Screenplay nomination for Eisenberg, who directed, wrote, produced, and starred in the project, but it was snubbed in Best Picture.
Culkin has dominated the precursor awards and should he prevail at the Oscars, he would end a 12-year streak that began after Christopher Plummer won for Beginners (2011). Plummer notably claimed this award at age 82, making him the oldest acting winner at that time (an...

In Barry Jenkins’ oneiric adaptation of James Baldwin’s If Beale Street Could Talk, Stephan James plays Fonny, an incarcerated sculptor wrongly accused of a crime. He enchants from the moment we see him on screen: When his character talks to his girlfriend (KiKi Layne) from behind a glass wall, James communicates the severity of carceral rupture with his anxiously clasped hands and melancholic gaze. The actor’s expressive eyes, often emphasized by furrowed brows, tell stories when words fail his character.
Language often fails Ricky, the protagonist of Rashad Frett’s meaningful but uneven feature debut. The 30-year-old Hartford native, portrayed with soulful precision by James, has just been released from prison. Life on the outside is a challenging obstacle course and Ricky, who was incarcerated at 15, understandably struggles to navigate it. He suffers from anxiety and Ptsd, as relayed through scenes of fitful sleep and muted sound as he enters states of agita.
