A pleasant surprise.

Centuries after a human instigated war against dragonkind, the remaining dragons now live a sheltered existence hidden from the world of man. When human development approaches their valley, silver dragon Firedrake (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) decides he must find the mythical dragon sanctuary The Rim of Heaven. Firedrake is joined by his friend Sorrell (Felicity Jones), a forest brownie, and the two set off on their journey to save dragonkind from confrontation with humans. When Firedrake arrives in the city, a chance encounter leads him to Ben (Freddie Highmore) a street orphan and petty thief whom Firedrake mistakes for a great Dragon Rider (due to a movie poster for "How to Tame your Dragon"). Ben learning of possible treasures tied to the Rim of Heaven decides to go along with Firedrake, but when an ancient artificial being brought to life through alchemy named Nettlebrand (Patrick Stewart) learns of Firedrake and his quest, the stakes become more desperate with Nettlebrand in pursuit of not only Firedrake, but also the dragons at the fabled Rim of Heaven.

Adapted from the 1997 German children's novel Dragon Rider by Cornelia Funke, the book became a best seller upon its English language translation. An adaptation was announced in development with Constantin Films producing and distributing, and visual effects house Rise FX producing the actual animation. While Rise FX has a history providing visual effects for many large scale Hollywood productions, in particular the visual effects for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Rise has recently ventured into feature film production with the likes of sci-fi film Stowaway and now Dragon Rider or as it's known in its U. S. release Firedrake the Silver Dragon. The movie doesn't break much new ground for children's animated films, and the marketing has been more than a little blatant about evoking memories of Dreamworks' How to Train your Dragon franchise (down to using similar style font and text on the poster), but while simple Dragon Rider is an effective film that hits all the right beats.

The movie is essentially a road movie with Firedrake an adventurous dreamer who lives vicariously through the stories told to him by dragon elders, and Sorrell as the more cautious and realistic grounding element who's more practical than Firedrake. The voicework by Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Felicity Jones is really well done and you buy their dynamic and they work well together. Freddie Highmore as Ben I thought worked reasonably well as the slightly selfish character who follows the redemption arc, and while it's nothing groundbreaking I thought it was done well. Patrick Stewart's performance as Nettlebrand I rather liked because he walks the line playing a character both relentless and threatening, but also dives into silliness with a very strange running gag of using a fictional website called "fetchamatch.com" using a very steampunk looking computer that was so surreal in terms of its presentation and placement I honestly couldn't help but crack a smile over it. The animation is also qell done with the textures and models well rendered and falling just shy of the level of Dreamworks or Pixar, but more than exceeding something like Illumination.

With the story being very much inspired by road movies the movie is built around various "episodes" our characters encounter. Most of the encounters are reasonably entertaining with an encounter with a zoologist who specializes in fantastical creatures being quite fun, a sequence with a djinn who lives in the exhaust pipe of a rusted Volkswagen Beetle, and a sequence set in India filled with strong visuals and some entertaining comic banter between two one off characters. One drawback I'd say that comes from this is despite the established ticking clock of Firedrake's clan going to war with humans, very little threat seems to come from the human world and the movie seems rather detached from it despite taking place in modern day. Pretty much every human the trio comes across is friendly to them or helpful and it probably would've helped sell the desperation a bit more had their been an encounter with a malicious group of humans to establish why Firedrake's clan needed to be relocated. Admittedly this is probably a nitpick and as I haven't read the book I'm not sure if this point was addressed in the book, but it's definitely one of the more noticeable sticking points to the movie. The film also has some rather out there references to other animated films such as the previous mentioned "How to Tame your Dragon" movie poster that was rather headscratching in terms of its inclusion, and I kid you not, a blink and you'll miss it visual reference to the Ice Age films. How? Why? I have no idea, but the surrealness of its inclusion was definitely amusing.

Dragon Rider is a slightly above average children's film that will be inoffensive viewing for its target audience. While stylistically it owes a lot to the How to Train Your Dragon films, the movie finds its own voice and identity to keep itself distinct. Whether this is enough will depend on a viewer by viewer basis, but having seen a number of Vanguard Animation or Crest Animation films that reveled in their own laziness I'm probably giving Dragon Rider some leeway. It's not a bad example of what Rise FX is capable of in terms of feature production, and with some refinement I wouldn't mind seeing more from them.

It's not that great

It's entertaining enough. My little one loves dinosaurs right now and thought that's what they were so she actually liked it. I like the voices though and nettlebeard is a pretty cool character. But some of the animation is a little outdated looking. Seems like it's be a cool book though.

Repeat of how horrible humans are

Yeah! Another story created to teach our children about how horrible humans are. Same story, regurgitated with different characters.

This story was imagined more than 20 years ago

From what I've seen in the comments people are calling this a rip off of how to train your dragon, Eragon, Moana. This film and story is adapted from a book written more than 2 decades ago. If these reviewers took 30 seconds to do a quick google search they would find that all of the movies that this one is "pulling ideas from" might in fact be taking ideas directly from Cornelia Funkes 'Dragon Rider'. Now this film did not do the original text justice but it is as original as a story gets and largely influences other dragon animations of the last 20 years. Unless of course you're suggesting that the author has super powers and was able to time travel, watch movies that would be released well into the future, and then pen a story about them, you people are nuts.

***Know your facts before you post them on the internet people, otherwise you just sound stupid. :)

Great & fun story! :)

Only problem is the posh British as opposed to the everyday British, Irish & American English.

Otherwise, I loved it even more than the Disney dragon rider movies!! :) :)

Finally real D&D lore in a modern setting.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. As a Dungeons and Dragons player its enjoyable to see someone who took the time to actually do research. The lore was spot on including the way most people confuse the cockatrice with a basilisk. The only downside is the way the dragons were named. As firedrake is probably closer to Bahamut. Finally I enjoyed the setup of the chromatic metallic dragon conflict.

Good movie for a family.

Basic

The story was very basic and unoriginal. It did not give sufficient time at the beginning of the film to introduce the main characters, so you never feel an emotional connection, before they set of on their routine adventure. The humour is not funny. CGI of the landscapes looks good but the character's human faces are average. Kids under 8 will be fine with it, but kids upwards might not enjoy it much.

Cheap productions, same storyline. Sometimes, too silly & too dark. Overall, it was okay.

I watched this movie recently and I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand, the storyline felt solid, but at the same time, it seemed like something I've seen before, especially in the "How to Train Your Dragon" movies. It also included references to "How to Train Your Dragon" and "Ice Age," which was interesting.

However, the movie felt like it was trying to cater to both children and adults, and I couldn't quite figure out who the target audience was. The voice casting choices, especially for the character Ben, were disappointing, and the character designs, particularly for Sorrel and some of the dragons like Firedrake, weren't well done in my opinion. The villain Nettlebrand was okay, but on the weaker side, and it was hard to take him seriously.

Both the animation and sound quality didn't meet my expectations. I really disliked the dull, grayish tones of the animation - it looked cheap. Despite these downsides, I could appreciate the adventure aspect and the world-building in the movie. However, the original song was awful, and it seemed like the movie was cutting corners everywhere.

Worst Film since eragon

The Film Has nothing in common with the incredible book of Cornelia Funke except maybe the names. The whole story ist bad, Has no emotions, no tension. The protagnonist is in fact more an antagonist and nothing young Kids should identify with. Lung is an selfashamed thick dragon who can Do nothing on his own, the Homunkulus Has no characterdevelopement. There is nothing to laugh, the jokes are flat, the Rats are not existing and the whole fantasy and mysterious charme of the book ist here lost to modern techniques like Skype, the Internet and parshipsites, a treaterous and filthy and egoistic cowardboy and dumb figures and places. Better never watch the movie and read the book(s).

Appears low budget, but has nice dragon designs and CG environments

However, the human and furry animal designs are so low quality that it ruins the movie for me with today's standards :-(

It's a fun film

I am not familiar with the book so I can't comment on that aspect but I found this movie really fun. My three year old enjoyed it and I had a few chuckles at some of the dialogue. It's a enjoyable kids movie. Enjoy it for what it is, a fun kids movie!

This was one of the worst adaptations of a book that I have ever seen.

Bad characterization of all of the characters, rushed story, and the events of the book are done so differently that I couldn't stop facepalming. Cornelia Funke's book is a treasure of a read, this is a bastardization of it and a lousy attenpt of trying to be How to Train Your Dragon which they shamelessly have posters of in the film.

Even from a standpoint of being a generic children's movie for parents to take their children to see, it falls so much shorter than How To Train Your Dragon or even The Good Dinosaur in levels of animation and the music too. I wish the studio actually followed the source material because the book was far too long to make into one movie.

Adding this review mid movie

I thought this was part of the how to train your dragon series. It's really not good, even for a kids movie. With the likes of Freddie high more and sir Patrick Stewart I was expecting much much more. The story started without any real introduction to any of the characters so there's no connection to the characters or story at all. Disapointed

Insultingly dissapointing

The intro is stolen by Moana, in between is a whole lot of nothing. It's unbelievable with how little of a story they can fill so.much screen-time. Add a Genie (stolen from Aladin, I guess) and a whole lot of nonsense and you wasted $20 for a cinema ticket. Sad. The only good thing to say: the animations were alright and it was scary enough to keep a 5 and a 7 year old busy.

Horrible, just horrible

If you're a huge fan of the book, like I am, don't bother watching, it's horrible. They completely ruined all the characters, none of them act like they did in the book. They slaughtered the story line making it too fast paced and leaving you unable to connect with the characters. I also wasn't impressed with the design of the dragons, they all looked overweight frogs. Seriously, did the creators of this movie even read the book?? Don't waste your time watching this, you'll just be disappointed.

Not good

I love the book and I thought this would be a nice adaptation but no, not in the slightest. The dragon don't look like the description of them, the colors doesn't match and the extra bits of jokes? Just no, it could have been great but I think they didn't even try.

I wouldn't recommend it.

Also the fact that I read the book first may be the reason I'm not happy with the finish product of the movie, still I don't like it.

Please read the book, it's fun and everything makes sense when you actually have the full context. Please!!

Also, Cornelia Funke has other books with beautiful characters.

It Didn't Click With Me ✋

I did not liked This animated German film "Dragon Rider" 😣

Normally, I love this kind of movies, but this one I could not find appealing at all.

For one thing, The drawing of the characters is mediocre, especially the metallic antagonist, the multi-eyed genie coming out of chasis of an abandoned VW beattle exhaust (German movie, right?)

It's just too strange and crazy. Plus the development of the story is all over the place.

The orphan kid is is course a latino thief kid and the natives who point the kid to to rim are Indians depicting the chief as a Indian food street vendor and the wizard lady bending a fat old lady with blue eyes.

Yes, cartoons for kids do not need to be realistic, but this one goes too far, and I can not image a kid loving this film.

Think about the lovable minions, gru and so many adorable fun characters for kids.

Here you will find none of that, I promise.

This was a waste of time. I honestly did not like it. You can try if you want, but i surely do not recommend it to you. ✋

Firedrake

On Netflix it has a different title. Watched with my toddler, he's obsessed with dinosaurs & loves dragons, so I picked this for us on our Friday Night Movie Night. It was a cute film.

I'm a big animation fan but this sucked

How to train your dragon is epic and also underrated compared to Disney films but this isn't even fit to be in the same league, like Netflix sky struggle with own brand films and whilst Netflix have had a recent gem in over the moon, sky is poor. This film is awful, script is bad, animation is beyond dated, characters were one dimensional and there's no humour, there's literally nothing remotely interesting to say.

An Entertaining Yet Shallow Ride: Dragon Rider (2020)

Dragon Rider (2020) is a visually appealing, family-friendly animation based on the beloved novel by Cornelia Funke. However, despite its potential, the film ultimately falls short of delivering a story as rich and meaningful as its source material might suggest. While the movie succeeds in entertaining its young audience with colorful visuals, whimsical characters, and adventurous plotlines, it lacks the depth and emotional resonance that could have made it truly stand out in the animated film landscape.

One of the main issues with Dragon Rider is the simplicity of its narrative. The film follows Firedrake, a silver dragon, on a quest to find a mythical safe haven for dragons known as "The Rim of Heaven." Alongside his companions-Sorrell, a comical forest brownie, and Ben, a street-smart orphan-Firedrake embarks on an adventurous journey while evading the menacing Nettlebrand, a dragon-eating monster. Though the premise holds potential for a thrilling and emotionally impactful journey, the film's execution feels flat and formulaic. There is little in the way of genuine character development or thematic exploration, which makes the story feel more like a simple adventure without deeper layers of meaning.

Having not read the original book, it's difficult to make a direct comparison, but based on Cornelia Funke's previous works, it's likely that the source material offered more depth than the film. Funke's novels are often known for their rich world-building, complex characters, and underlying messages. Unfortunately, the film adaptation doesn't seem to capture the same level of intricacy, instead opting for a more straightforward and surface-level approach. This decision likely contributed to the film feeling like a standard, albeit enjoyable, children's movie rather than an extraordinary or thought-provoking piece of cinema.

One redeeming aspect of the film is its voice cast, which includes notable talents. The use of well-known actors for voice work hints at the high expectations the filmmakers had for the project. It's clear that the production team was aiming for a successful hit, banking on the appeal of familiar voices to elevate the film's entertainment value. However, despite the strong voice performances, the overall output doesn't quite match the star-studded cast's potential. The dialogue feels uninspired at times, and the characters themselves are somewhat one-dimensional, limiting the actors' ability to bring true emotional depth to their roles.

A significant factor contributing to the film's shortcomings lies in its direction. The director, Tomer Eshed, who is relatively inexperienced in feature-length films, struggles to navigate the complexities of adapting such a beloved book into a cinematic experience. The film feels rushed at times, with little room for building emotional connections between the audience and the characters. This lack of pacing and development results in a story that, while entertaining, lacks lasting impact. The missed opportunity to create a more meaningful narrative is perhaps one of the film's most notable flaws.

In conclusion, Dragon Rider is an enjoyable yet average animated film. It succeeds in providing light entertainment for its target audience but fails to deliver the depth or emotional punch that could have elevated it to a higher standard. While the strong voice cast and appealing visuals help keep the film afloat, the weak direction and simplistic storytelling ultimately hold it back. For fans of Cornelia Funke's work, it may feel like a missed opportunity to see a richer, more layered adaptation of the beloved story. Overall, Dragon Rider is neither great nor terrible-just a middling film that could have been much more.

Funny and beautiful

This movie was clearly making a parody of how to train your dragon and used a lot of that in both the early story and visual jokes. I found the chemistry with both the protagonists and antagonists really funny. As well as many of the side characters' lines. All the character designs are amazing and unique, I especially liked the old dragon's design. Throughout the movie there were blink and you'd miss it visual gags to many films and tropes and it was all and all a fun film that managed to stay lighthearted when dealing with rather dark themes.

Would of been better if it was standalone

The film by itself is actually pretty good, voice acting was good, the character designs were great, especially the antagonist's design and the humour struck accord with me. I haven't read the book but from what I've heard, it isn't as faithful to the book as everyone hoped. So if you like light comedy and beautiful visuals, I say give it a watch.
