HBO Max is making a major appeal to anime fans with a slew of acquisitions that include some of the greatest anime films ever made.

As reported by Variety, HBO Max is partnering with acclaimed anime distributor Gkids to bring 20 titles to the streaming giant. The titles include works by Makoto Shinkai, such as Your Name and The Place Promised in Our Early Days, in addition to classics like Satoshi Kon's Perfect Blue.

Live-action offerings such as Shin Godzilla and Love & Pop will also be included.

When Are Gkids' Films Coming To HBO Max?

A handful of anime will be released on September 1st, with the rest trickling out over the remainder of 2025 and 2026.

Italian production designer Tonino Zera will receive the Campari Passion for Film Award at this year’s Venice Film Festival. Zera — whose works include production design for Giuseppe Tornatore’s The Unknown Woman (2006), Paolo Virzì’s Like Crazy (2016) and Michele Placido’s Caravaggio’s Shadow (2022) — most recently created the sets for Roman Polanski’s The Place, which will have its world premiere at the 80th Venice Film Festival next month. The dramedy, set in a luxurious Swiss hotel on a fateful New Year’s Eve in 1999, stars Oliver Masucci, Fanny Ardant, John Cleese, Luca Barbareschi and Mickey Rourke. It will screen out of competition in Venice.

Zera will receive his award Sept. 2 ahead of The Palace premiere.

Italy’s True Colours has taken international sales on “Perfect Strangers” director Paolo Genovese’s new movie, a comedy drama titled “The First Day of My Life.”

The Rome-based sales company will be launching pre-sales at the upcoming online EFM market on Genovese’s latest concept pic, which has echoes of Frank Capra’s classic “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

Based on Genovese’s novel of the same title, which was a bestseller in Italy, “The First Day of My Life” revolves around four characters on the brink of taking their lives who make a pact with a stranger with supernatural powers, played by “The Great Beauty” star Toni Servillo.

The Italian sales company reunites with director Paolo Genovese.

True Colours has added Italian filmmaker Paolo Genovese’s Superheroes to its Afm slate. Jasmine Trinca (Euphoria) and Alessandro Borghi (Romulus & Remus: The First King) star in the sentimental comedy drama about a young couple struggling to keep their relationship alive.

The film reunites the two actors who last shared the screen together in Sergio Castellitto’s 2017 drama Fortunata, also sold by True Colours, for which Trinca won the best actress award in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard.

This year’s FilMart marks the international sales debut of Beijing-based distributor Times Vision, which brings to Hong Kong a slate led by crime thriller “Savage” and animated feature “Nezha.” The company will be presenting nine live action films, including one documentary, and seven animated titles.

Times Vision is led by CEO Nathan Hao, who co-founded Chinese indie distributor Lemon Tree and led its international division before joining the newly established Times Vision in 2017. Times Vision imports foreign titles – primarily arthouse films, but it also has begun delving into the remake rights market – and is now getting into production as well. It is currently at work with Chinese partners on pre-production for a remake of 2016 Japanese Oscar entry “Her Love Boils Water.”

Golino’s second feature shows the difficult relationship between two brothers.

At the eve of the Efm, Italian world sales company True Colours adds Valeria Golino’s new film Euphoria to its slate.

Produced by Ht Film and Indigo Film, who are partnering again after the success of Sergio Castellitto’s Fortunata, together with Rai Cinema (Fire At Sea, Daughter Of Mine), Euphoria will be distributed in Italy by 01 in 2018.

The film is currently in post-production after finishing its 8 weeks of shooting in December.

Euphoria’s cast includes Riccardo Scamarcio (Them, John Wick 2) and Valerio Mastandrea (Perfect Strangers, The Place) as the two brothers, as well as Un Certain Regard Best Actress Jasmine Trinca (Fortunata, Honey) in a supporting role.
