Behind the Mask: The Fall of Abbie Bladecut

Bloody Axe Wound initially comes across as another subversively interesting slasher that aims to have fun with the rules of the sub-genre, but eventually becomes a wasted idea executed in a fun enough way to keep it watchable.

Acting is decent from the Bladecuts, with Billy Burke being an easy highlight of the movie as he handles the humour and the intensity to an impressively balanced degree as the fatherly killer Roger Bladecut. Moreover, Sari Arambulo is really fitting in the lead role of Abbie Bladecut; she is able to convey the struggles and aspirations to follow in her father's footsteps in a straight-faced and very comical way that is still funny but never comes across as silly or overacting. On a more technical note, the cinematography, lighting, and practical gore effects are all very well done. And the story itself starts out pretty strong, with an interestingly funny set up, and the balancing between the jokes and the killings is done to an effective degree.

However, that is also where it seems to be a point of struggle for the film. It can't consistently maintain its aforementioned balance, where the second act very much becomes a high school romance story that very nearly hijacks the main premise several times. The third act, in an attempt the balance the scales again, instead tips them entirely to being a straight up generic slasher flick with a strange and underwhelmingly unrewarding ending.

But it's biggest weakness is by far the world building, with several aspects and plot mechanisms left either unexplored or unexplained. Furthermore, the script can never decide how it works, and it leaves the audience with an utterly baffled sense of confusion as to how particular mechanisms drive the narrative.

Overall, it is funny enough to keep you entertained, but not interesting enough to stick with you and leave any kind of lasting impression.

My Girlfriend is an Axe Murderer

This was a very silly movie that parodies slasher flicks that revolves around a slasher dad who has a family business in creates slasher films and owns a film rental store who is trying to groom his adopted daughter to rise up and take over the business and save it before it goes under. It was very campy and corny at times but some parts were entertaining and there was some kind of underlying message about breaking the status quo of being a typical slasher when you start letting your emotions run wild. For what it is, if you're into seeing a mock up flick that pokes fun at slasher flicks while showcasing what it would be like to be the kid of a Jason Voorhees like character then check this one out.

Your only hope is to accept the absurdity

I've never seen a film that so nonchalantly asks you to simply accept the ridiculousness of its premise. It doesn't even try to explain the absurdity and implausibility of it all. There isn't even anyone filming these murders? I thought I was losing my mind. After about 20 minutes though I realised the only way to get any enjoyment out of the film was to simply sit back, accept it, and go along for the ride. Even then, it's touch and go whether you'll enjoy it.

The one thing the movie does well, and really its saving grace, is that it creates some likable characters. It's hard to make a young woman who murders innocents for profit into a pleasant character, but the movie finds a way. Also some of the side characters are quite well created. And so while the horror and story may not always be working for you, at least you can fall back on that.

Some of the gore was quite effective and it's a nice and short film. It knows not to outstay its welcome. It's not all bad, but it certainly does require some effort on the audience's part. A generous 5/10.

The amount of wasted potential is...upsetting

Abigail is the daughter of legendary serial killer (and snuff film maker) Roger Bladekill. When Roger starts to see the effects of age slow him down, he entrusts Abbie to follow in his footsteps - killing teens on video. Upon entering high school to scope out her victims, she encounters friendship and more, snagging her plans of a murder spree. And Dad isn't happy.

Now, that's my synopsis. A good pitch right? If I was a Shudder exec, I would also be putting money behind this. It sounds pretty damn awesome.

Sadly, this falls victim to oh so much. The writing is not coherent in its genre or mood, the characters are given some depth, but it's not delivered right and they still feel 2D, the whole snuff subplot is kinda forgotten for the most part? And something that bothered me to the nth degree: this seems to be set in the 90's, but I'm not sure the costume or set department got the memo.

That bothered me probably more than it should. The 90s have this specific...touch. Taste. Vibe. The clothes used here seem to be repurposed modern day pieces layered to appear grunge-esque. Sam Crane wears a chain as a belt, but it looks like cheap crap bought from Hot Topic. It doesn't look NATURAL. They look like your average current day citizens.

I started noticing corded phones, cassettes, wood-panelled cars, corded headphones, and I realised this is either satirising the popularity of slasher flicks in the 90s or, more likely, supposed to be set in that decade. The integration of old tech didn't make it pass though, too many things were too clean, too cheap, too flimsy, all aspects that are more common to modern day items. This is very specific but it did distract a whole lot, and possibly changed the mood of the whole film.

Most acting is pretty average, with the exception of Margo Anderson-Song, Eddie Leavy, and Billy Burke (yes, Bella Swan's dad in Twilight). These three really seemed to feel their characters. They were much more into it and managed to land their jokes.

That's a whole other problem. The writing. This film doesn't quite know where it wants to sit when it comes to mood. Are we serious? Are we comedic? Are we going into slapstick humour? We can have all of it in one scene, for sure, but the way these bits are written, they mostly fall flat on the floor. It's the sort of jokes where you nod, you don't laugh. You know it's meant to be a joke, but it's terribly unfunny. And it happens every few minutes. It's unbearable. The writers didn't leave time for us to breathe. Just, maybe space the comedy out next time, okay?

I think, overall, I wish there had been a bit of reworking this script before even shooting it. With some changes, it could have even more potential. It might've even been a good film.

I don't think this should be the end for the filmmakers, I do think they clearly have a vision, but it wasn't realised here. Maybe next time.

We left midway through the film

Painfully awful movie with a totally misleading star rating. I am puzzled by this rating in fact. The '90s video rental store(necessary for the storyline it appears) precede the age of 99 percent of the actors within the film. I hear there is some nostalgia for this decade lately but it is certainly overshadowed by the hodgepodge of a storyline and/or screenplay. We have not walked out of a theater in many years but this one has surely earned the distinction.

The dad's makeup and the quality werewolf mask alone do not make a movie. The high school cast must also have been responsible for the ratings it received. Gen Z does it again it appears.

Cheesy, Lame, Boring

Save your money and watch In a Violent Nature for a significantly better homage to slasher movies

This movie's failings are numerous but above all it was boring and lame, and just doesn't keep up with the golden age of horror we have going with released such as Terrifier, Oddity, Skinamarink, Late Night with the Devil etc..
  • corny plot trying to explore empathy and friendship at the expense of creating a compelling horror movie with excitement. Completely fails to capture the magic of the genre it makes meta commentary on
  • no good kills, so tame and afraid to push any boundaries
  • humor is completely random and is just thrown in gags (not in the good crazy way like terrifier)
  • massive pacing issues. First 10 mins are interesting and then the rest of the movie is a hallmark drama

Please skip, do not encourage shudder to continue making these lame stream milquetoast releases.

Slightly different from the norm, but good and entertaining.

I went into this blind knowing nothing about it. The whole premise of this movie was something I had not exactly seen before. While I found it somewhat predictable, that had no effect on the joy of watching. I jump from movie to movie if they bore me and not only was I not bored, but I didn't pause the movie at any point as I wanted to see how this would play out. I would have liked to know more background on the main family, there was enough I guess but I want to know why the father is so sure of why these things need to happen. Was some other force a driving factor in what they do or is it just their own set of rules that they always follow to a T. Either way I think anyone will enjoy the watch.

Get the minimum out of a cool idea

I watch tons of horrible movies. I'm always open to independent and low-budget movies (although the huge influx from streaming services has made me hesitant). Bloody Axe Wound could have been just another one of those bad low-budget movies that I would rate low and immediately forget about.

The problem is, it has such a cool concept for the premise and an interesting spin on the subgenre. The premise of them actually doing murders so they could make movies about it is pretty awesome. And the idea of a female slasher villain sounds highly intriguing.

That's why I'm so disappointed in this. It could have been great. And I wish they saved this idea until they could get better funding, writers, directors, etc. If done right, this had the potential to be a movie I loved. Instead, I couldn't make it past the 26-minute mark.

Huge Potential Wasted in This Bloodline of Boredom

This movie is most easily described as your average teen slasher with a bit of Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon mixed in. We follow Abbie Bladecut, the daughter of a local serial killer and slasher legend. After her father realizes he is getting older, he wants her to continue his legacy of killing innocent teenagers. However, the problem arises when she joins her local high school and is met with kindness and love from the other students. She even finds a potential love interest, which makes her mission to kill rather difficult.

The pitch sounds great, and the movie had immense potential to create something as unique as Behind the Mask. Unfortunately, that potential is not fulfilled, and the movie ends up feeling pretty generic given its premise. The characters are dull and not particularly interesting, and aside from the developing love interest, there isn't much for the audience to latch onto. Even the romance feels generic and disrupts the pacing by creating tonal inconsistencies within the narrative.

Instead of action and kills, we get boring conversations and a fairly predictable romantic subplot. The comedy rarely lands and is definitely not the film's strongest suit. However, the kills are decent and the gore is solid, which is arguably the most important aspect a straightforward slasher needs to deliver.

The movie ends up being enjoyable overall, but it's far from great or particularly engaging. Genre fans might still have a decent time, but with a premise like this, it could have been much more unique and entertaining. Sadly, it just ends up as another average horror release.

Gory, surprisingly sweet coming of age story

The premise of this script is hilarious: the adopted daughter of a serial killer is ready to take over the family business. Or thinks she's ready until she falls for the cool girl in biker jacket and lip gloss who is next on the kill list. The nostalgic 80s context was perfect, down to every hairstyle, rattly car, and interaction with cassette technology. Good performances from an appealing and funny cast.

I like how the film cleverly has it both ways. I didn't really want to see adorable, dutiful daughter Abbie Bladecut become a cold-blooded killer, but this is a horror movie after all. So people do have to go in bloody, sometimes hilariously accidental ways. I had to close my eyes several times, and laughed a lot.

Unexpected fun!

This is a slasher horror film with some wonderful comedic elements. Now, I don't really like slashers much, and if you're looking for a classic slasher, you might not like this film. This is not a serious slasher; it's fun, and there are some silly bits to it. Yes, it does touch on the standard slasher tropes, but with a little left-field humor. If you liked Heathers, this film might be for you. Great cinematography and sound, shot on location and mostly at night, this might be your next date night movie. Jeffrey Dean Morgan gives a great, if brief, performance, and Billy Burke shines even through the thick makeup. Keep an eye out for the Easter eggs!

Surprisingly good Shudder movie

I had Shudder for a year & canceled bc all the movies weren't even B movies - more like Z grade. I absolutely love JDM so I knew I had to watch this. Compared to other Shudder movies, this is award-worthy. Otherwise, it's still a good, campy slasher flick that I quite enjoyed. If all Shudder movies were like this, I'd subscribe again.

Apparently, I need 300 more words for my review. Um.. I like slashers and there's not really new ideas out there these days but this movie did pretty well with the mish-mash of general ideas. It ended in a way there could be a sequel & I'd definitely watch a sequel.

Maybe just let JDM & his wife take over Shudder so it doesn't suck.

An immensely fun and over-the-top slasher effort

Working in a video store, a teen wanting to follow in her father's footsteps as the town slasher for their rental service line of horror films finally gets her chance when an accident forces her to go to high school to follow her intended victims, but complications arise that threaten to derail the experience.

This was a massively enjoyable and fantastic genre commentary. One of the finer aspects of this one is the spectacular atmosphere created here involving the killer haunting the town and how it operates. Creating the kind of environment offering the father figure as a maniacal serial killer using the rules of slasher films as a guide for how to operate, the resulting work being distributed as a rental tape in their video shop for clueless customers to rent, and the resulting chaos that emerges as she tries to force her way into the family business, the main setup her is immensely intriguing with quite a lot to like. The ease with which they openly discuss the subject matter and how they operate their lives in the town allows for a lively tone in the beginning with how it sets up the mindset of a film-slasher rather than a serial killer with how they're shown to operate in the heat of the moment. The fact that it goes from that into a spectacular build-up of friendship that goes on while attempting to go about the traditional rules of a slasher film. Forced to go to high school to scout her prey, the idea of her taking an interest in the rebellious student the more they hang out makes for a nice bit of conflict with her father as that conflicts with the rules of a slasher villain. The reckless behavior and free-spirited nature exhibited should paint her as a classic victim in a slasher film and going about it here where her personal feelings towards them makes it harder to knock them off as there's a fine mix of comedic interactions and genuine pathos experienced while this plays out. Going for the romantic subtext as well over this section while trying to paint the rules of the slasher film villain who has to take over the mantel for her infirmed father is a fun touch and creates further disillusion between everyone for how it tries to change up the traditional formula in these films. The finale here, involving the surviving group heading off to a local campground for safety only to realize that they've stumbled into his birthplace, the way it goes against those traditional formulas by having the group far more cognizant of the rules than they expect and use that to undermine her attempts at bringing them together for following the rules of the films. These are based on the series of encounters at the campsite which not only takes on the type of wild confrontations and over-the-top stalking present in the rest of the film which has a slew of disgustingly brutal and wild kill scenes featuring equally wild gore and deaths that are as similarly over-the-top. The setup takes a bit to buy into how the whole series of exploits are captured on videotape for others to watch as films that no one else in town seems to recognize at all, but if that's not much of an issue there's little to dislike here.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence and Graphic Language.

Funniest horror of the year!

This is by far one of my favorite movies of the year behind "I Saw the TV Glow". They did such a great job jumping right into the plot and believing the audience would be smart enough to understand the premise. The villain's struggle between being a father and a slasher was hilarious and watching the main character become one of the "good guys" was great.

Every one of the cast did such a great job and I plan on watching it again in theaters. I hadn't heard much about the film beforehand, so now I have to go and tell all of my friends! It's on par with tucker and dale vs. Evil and behind the mask.

Great work.

These were the kind of movies we saw in the 80s!!!

Before the world turned into a bunch of PC sissies, movies like this played at drive ins in the early to mid 80s and by the late 80s and early 90s you found them at video stores for rent. Although the ones at the video store were little known but the cover art attracted your interest. The cover art here is pretty impressive which caught my interest.

There's some awkward humor and annoying teen characters reminiscent of those slow witted teens Jason and Michael used to kill. There's a lot of tropes here and throwback to the 80s video cassette covers. Billy Burke from those cheesy Twilight movies stands out here with a solid premise here. Thinking Dawsons Creek but with some bloody violence. I got to say this reminded me of crushing the video store shelves then begging my parents for the latest low budget slasher. Anyhow, a definite recommendation and puzzled as to why this didn't hit the big screen. It's a lot better than what's come out in multiplexes the last few years calling themselves horror.
