I found it pretty entertaining

It's finally got around to watching Hanna and have to say I found it pretty entertaining. I never saw the movie so I had no expectations going into it. I know some fans of the movie didn't like it and then there are others who say it was even better. I do know that the series has a very solid 7.6 rating here and the movie a less solid 6.7. Anyway, I was thoroughly entertained throughout the entire series and glad they were able to give it a proper ending instead of a cliffhanger. It's only 3 seasons with 22 total episodes so it's an easy binge. It actually watches better as a binge watch instead of waiting over a year between seasons and forgetting what was happening. If you're looking for a solid thriller with plenty of action then give Hanna a try.

A rare series that's better than the movie.

It doesn't happen often, but this series gets a 9 from me while the 2011 movie gets an 8. And that's saying something since I'm a huge fan of Saoirse Ronan, who played Hanna in the film version. Esme Creed-Miles is very effective in the role of the highly-skilled yet "fish-out-of-water" Hanna, and the supporting cast are also quite convincing. Perhaps an obvious fact (given that there's much more time available) but I feel that this series fleshes out the various characters more than was possible in the movie, which allowed me to become more invested in them. My only complaint is minor, but the production team clearly spent less money by filming a lot of scenes at night, so I'd suggest watching in a dark room if you want to understand what's going on during those moments. Keep an eye out for future roles played by Esme as I predict she's got quite a career ahead of her. I was also captivated by Rhianne Barreto, who very believably plays Hanna's one true friend. The direction, scoring, location scenery, and cinematography (albeit a bit dark at times) are impressive. Highly-recommended binging material.

Worth Watching

I thought Hanna was a show that's definitely worth watching, it's actually pretty good. From what I've read it seems that most of the low reviews are from people who are comparing it to the movie and they don't like that it's a little bit different from it. Who cares? Just enjoy it for what it is and that's an entertaining tv show that's separate from the movie. Season 1 is probably the best of the seasons but they're all pretty good. It may start off a little slow for some but stick with it because it turns into an action packed thriller that will keep you entertained throughout the entire series.

Great show ended too soon

Downloaded this show on a whim for a trip and watched on my flight. The first episode was a real attention grabber and had me hooked right away. The first season was fantastic and non stop action and subtle humor. Season was a bit slower and less action packed but Season 3 was outstanding again up until the finale. I felt the finale was a bit rushed and I was very sad to see the show end. Esme Creed Miles was an amazing actress in this show and it was impossible not to love in this show. I will miss watching this story unfold further and her immensely. I would love to see another series of a similar nature on Prime!

Good action thriller

I just finished watching season 2 and I really liked it! I won't compare it with the first season because it has been a while since I've watched it but I would say that it felt almost at the same level, although the story took a different direction. But hey, it's a new season! And I really hope that Amazon keeps it up with more and longer seasons. It's a fairly good mix of drama, action, thriller and many unexpected turns. I found myself really caring about what happens to some characters, seriously annoyed about the decisions of others and often on the edge of my seat, so to speak. Compared to so many average and boring shows available today, this is refreshingly entertaining. Esme Creed-Miles did an excellent job, as well as all the supporting artists.

Season one was better

Season one was great. I was hooked with every episode and the character development was great. Season 2 seems to be pretty bad. Its very redundant and decisions are made that frustrate you beyond belief. Shame cause this series was so good it's first season.

Don't compare this show with the movie.

I see a lot of reviews comparing this tv show with the movie. Just don't. This is a totally different thing to watch and it's very good.

The acting is perfect, the cinematography is also very well done and there is a lot a thrills going by in one way or the other.

And Esme Creed-Miles (Hanna)? Where did they find this actress. She is so good. I Knew Joel Kinnaman allready from Altered carbon. But Esme did it here. Mireille Enos as Marissa also did very very well.

I'm at epdisode 5 now and i wanted to wait with my review till the end but i couldt resist cause of all the negative reviews. Mostly after seeing the first episode only and comparing it with the movie. Just don't and watch it like somthing new.

Just watch and enjoy. I think this is Prime's best show till now.

Greetings from the Netherlands and excuse me for my English.

Hanna: Enjoyable but something was missing

Plot

In equal parts high-concept thriller and coming-of-age drama, HANNA follows the journey of an extraordinary young girl raised in the forest, as she evades the relentless pursuit of an off-book CIA agent and tries to unearth the truth behind who she is.

Cast

Esme Creed-Miles leads in a performance that flits between decent and I can't believe they didn't do a retake. Mireille Enos is at a career best, Áine Rose Daly, Dermot Mulroney, Ray Liotta, Joel Kinnaman and a standout performance by Gianna Kiehl.

Verdict

I enjoyed Hanna (2011), though far from flawless it was a well constructed feature and Saoirse Ronan was excellent as was Cate Blanchett. I was hesitant going into this as let's be honest movie to television adaptations have a dreadful track record.

Hanna is wonderful paced, that I'll say out of the gate. If you think the story can't be dragged out across 3 seasons you're mistaken, they do a decent job there.

The cast for the most part are competent though some are more consistent than others, Creed-Miles accent peaks and troughs, this really should have been addressed and not made it to the final product.

It's action packed with a passable enough story and I did enjoy it but though I had no problem binge watching it throughout without boredom I did feel that there was something missing. After much head scratching I came to the conclusion that, I have absolutely no idea what it was! Something just didn't click, the show was enjoyable and was fairly engaging but something just failed to complete the show.

I'd advise people stick with the movie, but on the flipside there are worse shows to throw some hours into.

Rants

IMDB is known for not vetting reviews very well but yeesh, check out the 1/10 ones. People who haven't even watched the show reviewing, people who bailed after an episode thinking they can have an opinion on the show, countless one line reviews and stupidity like "I just finished episode 1 and I have no idea what any of the characters look like. Just sat there listening, staring at a black screen." and "Hate White Men, This is for You!, If you think all men should die, more so white men but Blackmon as well, then this show is for you. Guys, if your wife or girlfriend likes this show, I would sleep with one eye open".

Time for IMDB to start vetting better or the IMDB community to grow up.

The Good

Mireille Enos Gianna Kiehl Soundtrack Great pacing

The Bad

Esme Creed-Miles's performance can be pretty poor at times Not as engaging as it should be.

Something is missing.

[7.5] Season 2_ Little Alias with teens

Though I hoped that this season would be better than the first, as per my review about 5 months ago, I was kinda let down.

  • The story is not better than season 1.
  • We've got sort of 5 episodes of fillers and 3 more serious and better ones.
  • We do not see Hanna more in action (aside the last 3 serious episodes). She should be more on the spotlight, with shininess and more crazy good performances. She is like a human "Bionic" girl with awesome abilities and amazing aiming. The producers & writers really need to understand that and give her increased brilliant spots to shine (martial arts and guns alike).
  • Sandy (Áine Rose Daly) was one of the highlight of the season. She's a talented and beautiful actress who has the potential to become a really bad yet powerful smart girl in the series.
  • Nothing of real interest for Marissa, aside adding mother-like behaviors to her collection in the show; Although, her personal style of handling guns are one of the best I saw in women and men alike.

Again, I ask the producers, to give to series aim & purpose and squeeze it into a powerful beam for it to really deliver and shine.

Less "useless" characters and more of Hanna in action.

A roller coaster ride

I love CIA type shows and Hanna stands in a world of her own in this universe as a very unique and much needed offering. The characters are so complex that it's hard to label even the evil ones as purely evil. Incredible writing and acting. They do a great job of showing human nature and exploring various interpersonal relationships. You see characters that do the most despicable things, hate them, yet still understand how they got there. Some even later turn out to be the good guys.

Various father/daughter relationships are explored - the sacrificial, the nurturing, the abusive, etc. And you see the outcome, the kind of children and adults shaped from each.

You see what unaddressed childhood trauma can do to a highly accomplished, extremely powerful and unbreakable adult, shattering and reverting them back to the traumatized child in an instant. I don't want to give much more here but this story line was intriguing to watch unfold.

If you love shows that really delve into human nature and explore the outcomes of psychological manipulation and grooming/conditioning, you'll get your fill here.

If you love shows that feature school-like settings and/or shows that take place in various countries, you'll love this.

If you love a good action-thriller, emotional roller-coaster drama, great entertainment, great writing and acting, you'll surely enjoy this.

This show deserves at LEAST an 8/10, IMO. I thoroughly enjoyed this and the only reason I can think of for not watching this sooner was because I assumed it was a teen show. Thankfully, I was wrong. It's a great show for adults.

Season 1 is the only season you should watch.

Every episode in season 1 is like a mini movie, definitely must watch. Although the ending feels some what forced and not really justifiable; it's still a solid watch.

Season 2: 🤢 bruh, it's the classic let me tell the exact same story but in a worse way for the easy cash grab. I'm not even finished with the second season and the lapse of logic has been astounding. Character growth is dumb inconsistent. One episode she does things that she has no justification for knowing how to do, the next she's throwing a temper tantrum like if she was still that dumb little girls from episode 1. This isn't just her thought, almost all main characters go from overly cautious & or super competent to incredibly careless & or incompetent the next. What a sad waste of time and money.

Best action pack show!

Tv Show is really good it's not all over the place like other tv shows that start off good then they fall apart or get weird .full of action, sad, thrilling scenes full package if you ask me. Hannah is absolutely the perfect actor for this show. The movie doesn't compare anything to this tvshow it actually makes people not want to watch the tvshow but I decided to give it a chance and I'm really glad I did. I told my whole family about it and they all got addicted. We all finished it in like 3 weeks straight binge watched it and we all can't stop talking about it. I'm sure you guys will love it and have something more to chat about with your fam and friends.

What happened with Season 2?

I really enjoyed season 1 of this show. Good writing, lots of action, and good acting. I would rate S1 as a 9. I was *really* looking forward to season 2. Boy was I disappointed. It's as if they tossed out all the writers from S1 and brought in writers from the CW. They turned the show into a teenage girl's clique drama. Until the last 2 episodes of S2 they completely neutered Hanna's bad-assory and made it a show about a bunch of teenage girls living in a dorm together. Bleh.

Superb! Stunning! One of THE BEST TV series ever!

I picked up on some tiny continuity errors but overall this series ranks amongst the best. I would rate it at 9.5 because it is action packed from beginning to end and often has you sitting on the edge of your seat screaming things like "For Chrissakes, LOOK BEHIND YOU!"

We watched all 3 seasons while staying with friends over Christmas and my wife and I came to the conclusion that any series we would watch after this was going to be an anti-climax.

The direction was great and the story unpredictable. All actors played their roles well and were very convincing. I take my hat off to Mireille Enos and that smile which told you everything you needed to know every time she used it. She was magical!

Interesting interpretation then divergence from the movie. Good series.

Update November 24, 2021: The third season became available today. At the end of season #2 Hanna, as Mia, at the swimming pool asks, "So, what now?" The first episode in season #3 doesn't specifically answer that but we are taken to a new class of teenage girls just finishing their training as assassins and given their assignments to different parts of the world. The show retains that sense of intrigue and "who can you trust" feeling. I look forward to watching all the episodes.

The 2011 movie "Hanna" is one of my favorites, but in reality a lot of story is compressed into its running time.

In season #1 Amazon Prime offered roughly 6 hours of story over 8 episodes. The first one, which I saw last night, is a fine start. The actress who plays Hanna is the daughter of Samantha Morton and she is fine in the role, but quite different from what Ronan brought to the role in the movie. As the series progressed I found myself liking the new Hanna character more and more. By the end of season #2 she owned the role.

The basic premise is the same but it is told somewhat differently. It is a bit darker and grittier and the scene where Hanna is discovered and captured is done quite differently from what is depicted in the movie. Neither good nor bad, just different. Also throughout they added enough "salty" language to get an "R" rating if this were a movie.

Now that I have watched the whole series I can say "pretty good effort." While all the story lines are consistent with the movie most are depicted quite differently, a lot more depth and extrapolation are added to the basic story lines and, most of it works quite well.

It is not useful to directly compare this Amzon series to the 2011 "Hanna" movie because they had different goals and they accomplished them differently. I say "kudos" to Amazon for bringing us this very interesting and entertaining series.

Season #1 ended close to where the movie ended so season #2 had to do an extrapolation of "what might have become of Hanna". It does a credible job of inventing something new. The experimental program to train young girls to become expert fighters has been restarted and Hanna becomes part of that, plus a handful of new and very interesting characters. This has become one of the better "invented for streaming" series. Hanna has the last line in season #2, at the swimming pool, "So, what now?"

75% is made by Top notch filmmakers take a break and the other 25% B movie masters take over

I'm still trying to figure it out what happened here and what I mean by the headline. I also think people saying the second season is action packed really threw me off. It's not. It's more of a thriller. I get they wanted to humanize some of the characters, but episodes 4-5 almost put me in a coma from boredom. The first 3 were intense and the final 3 were really good. There's a lot of mistakes made and lessons not learned by the characters and it was driving me crazy. You'll see. It felt like the budget was slashed or something also. Something just felt off. It was like there was a grade A filmmaking crew was shooting this and they would go on break and film school would take over for a few scenes here and there and suddenly everything is laughable or just really bad. Esme Creed-Miles is about the only constant that stays good even in these bad scenes. Like there's a shootout that's going really good with great effects and it was like they called timeout and finished the scene in a kitchen that looked like it was shot in one take on a smartphone, if you read this before watching the last episode pay attention to this scene. There's a extra baddie that catches on fire in the kitchen scene that is absolutely so bad it's hilarious. Even Enos and Mulroney are all over the place. It's weird. In the end I enjoyed it, but it's way overhyped and it's not action packed. So just know that going in. Even the IGN review said action packed. I'm really trying to tell you it's not action packed so you know this from the get. You'll enjoy it much more. I know I would have.

"I put babies in the furnace"

I just binge watched season 3 and I don't know if it's because I watched 1 and 2 a long time ago but I think this could be the best season yet, although I still hold s1 really close to my heart. Such a great series especially if you like action and it has a compelling story to add onto that as well which keeps you engaged throughout in between fights. I hold s1 at heart because that's when we first feel the chemistry Hanna and her father had, s2 brings girl 249 into the picture, it wasn't bad though not as good as the fist season but in s3 everything seems more mature and it's just as thrilling as s1, brought back that edge of the seat feeling while maintaining a more complex plotline; you could sense the tension and urgency in each episode without overdramatizing it. And at 6-8 episodes a season it's incredibly binge worthy.

Hannah brilliance is not only about well executed action scenes and beautiful location but also captivating story...

Hannah season 1 was captivating. I loved everything about this TV show. It was shot well, the scenery and locations were amazing. Finally something different than USA. Europe is also beautiful and worth exploring.

The screen filter was not the typical one you see for European locations by American film/TV makers. Unlike other productions shot with this grainy, darker filter, making you thing that streets of Europe are polluted, dirty , always dark locations - here everything has natural feel to it. Forests, cities are full of charm which is even more striking during spectacular action sequences.

The story will take you all over Europe. You will be following steps of Hannah, a fugitive teenager chased by CIA. All the dark secrets are waiting for you to explore them. Awesome. All of the actors did a really good job. Joel Kinneman and Mirelle Enos playing Marrisa Wiegler are spectacular.

There are no good/evil characters here which I really like about the show. Hannah did a great job too. She behaved exactly like a person would in her situation. Music was stellar. I think that amazon has a winner here. Marissa Wiegler smile again for me with your super fake and deadly semi corporate smile. Yes !

Good start before....

This series proposes a good, if not amazing first season before everything falls apart in the second. This is though genuinely not a bad series but too much teen girls audiences oriented for my taste. And I am not a teenage girl. And action sequences are not believable at all, but I admit that belongs to the DNA of the show, even the movie, which I saw nine years ago. And the forever smiling CIA operative woman, even when she threatens someone, disturbs me, annoys my nerves.

They turned this in to some teen type wb show that is slowwwwwww i mean gone with the wind slow..... it doesn't build to anything dont watch this you have been warned. And yes its literally that bad, its not a thriller its not a drama its a show who budget they clearly cut for the second season... its just a show about teen love in the 2nd season the action is minimal and the story line is painfully slow and disconnected

Everything you want a thriller series to be.

Hanna is one of the best thriller series I have seen. Engrossing, intelligent, exciting and with great performances, especially from Mireille Enos and Esme Creed-Miles. It's incredible to think that Esme Creed-Miles was just 17 when the series began. She brings such maturity, subtlety and intelligence to the role of Hanna/Mia, as well as an otherworldly aspect to the character. All of this makes her so believable as a young girl, brought up in a forest, naive and emotionally undeveloped, who only knows how to fight and does so with courage and determination. Creed-Miles makes Hanna's a moving and exciting journey, a real testimony to her acting ability - but then Samantha Morton, another great actress, is her mother. It must be in the genes.

Hanna and her sisters.

I've reviewed each season of "Hanna", which can be found against the final episode of each run - but I thought I'd put something here too, so sum up my overall thoughts.

I haven't seen the film version of "Hanna", so came to the Amazon Prime series with a relatively clean slate. (I did watch the remake of "The Killing" so it was nice to see Enos and Kinnaman together again). Though I was concerned about what I thought the premise was, being extended into a show, I found an enjoyable series, with excellent music choices and good performances.

Erik Heller (Joel Kinnaman) rescues a baby and her mother from a covert military facility in Eastern Europe. Pursued by soldiers, they crash their car and the mother is killed, however, Erik and the baby escape into the woods. 15 years later, Erik has brought Hanna (Esme Creed-Miles) up in the wilderness, infusing survivalist skills with her already unnaturally heightened senses. However, she's frustrated at the limits of her life and a chance encounter leads the agency, led by Marissa (Mireille Enos), to resume their hunt.

There was lots I found I liked about this series. Coming off the back of watching "Treadstone" I worried that again the plot would prove overcomplicated, dealing as it does with a couple of different time periods and a country hopping story, but none of this was the case. I understood everyone's drives all the way through and though there is a little cross and double cross, all the motivations were explained to us ahead of time. Performances are strong, with Kinnaman and Enos standing out, along, of course with Esme Creed-Miles as the titular character. She plays Hanna wonderfully, like a fish out of water at times, but always on the cusp of snapping back into survivalist mode and killing everyone in the room. I really liked the stuff involving the family, and the excursion to Kent but oddly, my favourite part about the show was the music, lots of Karen O, and Yeah Yeah Yeahs, but the newly created score music was nice too.

I enjoyed the first season of "Hanna" more than I thought I might, with its strong performances and coherent plotting. The second season expands the universe a little, but without sacrificing any of it's core strengths. It's took me a while to get around to season three of "Hanna", around a year in fact since this final season arrived on Amazon Prime. It's through no fault of the show though, as I've enjoyed the previous two runs. This too, was a worthy season and rounds out a series that was much better than I thought it might be.

It surprisingly rare to see a series as consistent as "Hanna" with a true beginning, middle and end.
