Bad but kinda fun

So it's definitely not a good movie but I will say I was entertained. You kind of know what you're getting yourself into so you can accept the lower quality of production and acting. Still enjoyable considering.

Set your expectations appropriately, and you'll be content.

This is not an AAA title. It clearly isn't, and hasn't been marketed as such - so what's the point of complaining about it not being up to those standards. Take it for what it is - a poor-man's Saw or Hostel. It's not a great movie by any measure, and the action scenes are immersion-busting - but again, that's to be expected, and it has a solid enough premise. As others have said, this would have been a good Black Mirror episode.

Turn off the brain, and just enjoy it.

A Bloody Critique of Fame and Voyeurism

Funhouse (2019), directed by Jason William Lee, is a Canadian horror-thriller that blends elements of reality television with a social commentary on the extremes of entertainment culture. At its core, the film explores the dark underbelly of fame and voyeurism, presenting a disturbing, yet familiar, critique of how far people are willing to go for attention and spectacle.

Plot Overview The movie revolves around a group of international celebrities-each known for their moment of fame-who are invited to participate in a reality TV show called *Funhouse*. The catch? It's a deadly competition where the contestants must play sadistic games, and the loser of each round is brutally executed, live-streamed for the morbid entertainment of a worldwide audience. The last one standing wins a massive cash prize, but they must first survive the cruelty orchestrated by a puppet master behind the scenes.

Direction and Cinematography Jason William Lee's direction effectively captures the sleazy and exploitative tone that reflects the film's commentary on media and reality TV. The visual style is slick, with a digital sheen that complements the hyper-modern, almost dystopian setting of a reality show. However, the direction sometimes falters, leaning heavily into the more predictable tropes of modern horror, such as shock value gore and shallow characterizations.

The cinematography, handled by Shawn Seifert, is sharp and appropriately claustrophobic, heightening the tension in confined spaces. There are some standout moments of visual storytelling, such as the contrast between the glitzy exterior of the show and the brutal reality lurking beneath the surface. This effectively mirrors the way reality TV glamorizes human suffering. However, as visually competent as the film is, it lacks a distinctive or innovative style that might have elevated the experience beyond its predictable structure.

Acting and Characters The cast does a decent job with the material, but the characters themselves are thinly drawn. Each contestant is a stereotypical caricature of a celebrity archetype: a fallen pop star, a controversial YouTuber, and so on. While this is a deliberate choice to emphasize the satirical nature of the film, it ends up making it difficult to truly care about any of them. Their fates feel more like fodder for the film's violence than individuals with meaningful arcs.

As the body count rises, so does the sense of detachment from their outcomes.

Themes and Social Commentary Where *Funhouse* shines is in its thematic exploration of society's obsession with fame, violence, and desensitization to suffering. The film critiques the voyeuristic nature of reality TV, the hunger for sensationalism, and the increasing normalization of cruelty in digital spaces. These ideas are highly relevant in today's media landscape, where reality shows push boundaries, and social media thrives on public humiliation and outrage.

Gore and Horror Elements For fans of the horror genre, particularly those who enjoy survival horror and gore, *Funhouse* delivers on its promise of shocking violence. The deaths are creative in their brutality, and the tension builds effectively in some of the elimination sequences. However, the film relies too heavily on these moments to sustain interest, which can make the overall experience feel repetitive.

Conclusion *Funhouse* is a competent but flawed horror film that offers a scathing, if somewhat shallow, critique of media consumption and the dark side of reality television. While its thematic ambitions are clear, the execution often feels derivative and lacks the nuance to fully engage its audience beyond surface-level thrills. For those intrigued by the concept of a twisted, *Black Mirror*-esque game show, it provides some gruesome entertainment, but it ultimately fails to break new ground in the horror genre.

No fun house

I keep reading reviews from people who didn't finish or watch most of the movie which is just dumb. I got through it. They were right to stop watching but don't leave reviews if you watched 5 minutes..

This movie features cliche characters , an unlikeable villain , poor effects and an ending that somehow makes it all so much worse. One of the worst endings I've seen in a horror movie in a long time . The worst thing I keep reading is that this is any universe near "Saw." I guess the same as "Sharknado" is as good as "Jaws." Just stop it !

This honestly reminds me of a worse version of the B-movie actual Saw rip off "Are you Scared?" So if you some how liked this movie ... maybe try that. This movie is just awful though.

I watched this for free but still want my money back.

This movie handles the idea of vapid celebrity culture and the TMZ style media coverage that follows, while playing out on the backdrop of a Saw style torture tournament. The outstanding issue is that the themes the film tries to comment on we have seen covered a hundred times in better, more subtle projects.

The damnation of meaningless celeb status is constantly waved in the audiences face which doesn't help the characters feel relatable, but perhaps thats the point? Non of these feelings are aided by the tepid script and questionable acting either, which led me into a sort of numb coma halfway through the film as I watched fictional instagram people being killed one by one and feeling nothing.

I recognise and respect that the film had a smaller budget and lesser known cast than most mainstream releases and aesthetically it was fairly pleasing and some scenes hit the mark and just about kept my interest afloat despite my often deflating attention. However I still ended the film feeling beaten down by the film's lacking apsects and especially the ending monologue delivered by the villain (AKA poundland moriarty) was so on the nose even Christopher 'headstone'Gerard would have been K.O'ed by it.

We get it, Instagram is bad, you didn't need to make a movie to tell us.

I wanted to see what the twist was...

...and it was really, really dumb.

The acting and writing are horrible, the washed out celebrities are annoying, the news show that pops up after every death is unbelievably cringey.

The 2 best parts about this movie are the hot blonde and her nice rack.

been made before but it was still "fun"

Similar to escape room and various other movies revolving around the same principle. Nevertheless an entertaining gorefest and escape room flick for those who are interested in this style of movie.

not worth spending time on this movie

This movie tried to convey something. However, the stories used are meaningless and the characters in this movie are not representative enough. The director is ambitious but apparently he needs to dig more in humanity before he could tell an eloquent story. He wants to say that morden people are becoming coarse but this movie itself is coarse enough. Yes, the director succeeded but that success resulted in a rubbish movie. The only things I can remember are an uglified panda and so many children watching a bloody live stream.

smart horror & some visions to discuss

Entertaining thriller horror. the cruelty is far from human but the messages did let me think about how much, social media is messed up in present times. Even most reality programs on TV are fake or boring or stupid. But Internet is not all that bad, it helps mankind in all aspects for creating a better world. Lets say, some creative and clever scientists or wathever company's can turn into money greedy wolverines or some psychopaths too. And on the other hand, if younger generations prefer and like to live on social media, it is their choice and someone who does not want it is not obliged to participate or look at it. In that way, the characters in the film who were the social media misfit targets got punished havily. For example, I like nice sexy woman too man! even to play memory with one or some. I got scared now. All by all, the picture kept my attention and some plot swiches were even suprising for me. And the acting? well not so bad as i read in most reviews. I could give it an 8 star instead off the 6.2 current average but it would underrate my other film ratings. There are a lot off movies using the similar genre but i need to skip them while watching. Not this one, even if there are some unstable aspects about big brother situations. Give it a try guys & dolls!

Cant find anything to watch? WATCH IT

Good for one watch if you cant pick anything, its a fun ish movie if you like gore and breast. A couple scenes are predictable with the exception of a plot twist ending thats not predictable. Like i said its a good watch for a having trouble picking a movie kind of night, you will be entertained. I gave it 4 stars cause obviously its not the best movie in the world, not the worst. But for what it is its decent and has been done before.

Panda Power!

An international cast of not-horrible actors. A seemingly thoughtful script with something to do with internet celebrity. A competitive reality show with real and inventive elimination challenges. The ending gets very twisty. It's got masked henchmen. And a villain rocking an Eldredge knot tie.

I was invested throughout.

Above average horror wt decent acting. i dare you to do better!

Great song at the end. probably will become a series like Saw. director did a good job with writing too. im going to watch his other films. if you dont like this type of horror then dont criticize it wt low scores. if you think it dosnt deserve over 4 because you are such a horror gore critic ...... same. Recommended. give it a second try if you give up after the beginning. I originally fast forwarded it and realising that it is actually ok I restarted it from the beginning .

Really weak writing and no effort made to follow the movie's internal logic

Pretty disappointing overall. The story is riddled with plot holes throughout and it is edited really bizarrely. There are weird images of weather events throughout, for absolutely no reason, as well as other visuals that make no sense with the story.

Though this is billed as a "death game with one survivor," the events are randomly either competitor vs. Competitor, or just basically "competitor dies." There is no internal logic to the people who are paired up to 'fight,' and the viewer votes don't actually do anything (seeing as sometimes a random competitor is just asked to compete for their lives, despite not being the lowest voted resident.) The characters were not bad, and the acting, though sub-par at best was not terrible. However the story developments and 'plot twists' were very, very stupid and predictable. There are also a few expository scenes where someones just speaks incredibly dumb lines into the camera, and that "dialogue" was deeply stupid.

The main bad guy also has these weird tattoos on his face for absolutely no reason. What was the point of that??

Lastly, without spoiling anything, the movie ends with a fourth wall break, very much in the vein of "Funny Games," but in this movie it just falls flat.

I wouldn't choose to see this again. Cheap Saw-wannabe, with not enough attention paid to the writing, the story and the script.

Not your typical "horror" movie

If you can see past the bad cgi and some stagnant dialogue, it raises awareness to living in 2020. Social media, news, politics. Beheading over swearing, shootings over a nip slip. Are we becoming desensitized to everytjong going on in the world? Are we becoming accustomed to killing on a daily basis? It's super weird, but I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Don't take it too serious!

This movie was entertaining, had some really creative death scenes and contained a clear and honest message towards the ending. If you're into Saw, Escape room and black mirror, this movie is for you. Don't listen to all the negativity, just turn the movie on, relax and enjoy.

Decent

Let's be honest. This isn't going to win any Oscars. The accents are hilarious and maybe the worst I've heard in recent memory. The plot doesn't make sense but its like those rubbish horror movies you used to rent on vhs. You weren't expecting them to be good. The tragedy is that I enjoyed this more than Us and I loved Get Out.
