Super fun & adrenaline pumping! Yet also really emotional, great experience centered on a strong social crusade.

I went to this film after a colleague recommended it. I'll be frank I wasn't fond of the really random dance sequences (as an American they're a bit too random for me, though Mr. Vijay can dance really well) but the film got those out of the way early. I was told a couple things about this film before going in- it is a huge "mass masala" so it fuses many different genres together. And that the actor, Vijay, is an enormous superstar in the Tamil state who the people really adore. As soon as the film started, the audience whistled and cheered at just his name appearing on the screen! And then when he first appears in the film, the audience was overjoyed and so many cheers, I've never been among a crowd like that. It's crazy I hadn't seen a film by Vijay yet but I got chills seeing how much the audience loved him. And throughout the film, it was too easy to see why: spectacular performances as 3 different people, and he nailed them all. Especially the village role, was a terrific and moving performance, he has a huge screen presence and powerful flair about him. I've noticed that the Indian superstars are really a class apart in this, I can see these select few are at that level due to these certain intangibles that have won over the audience, its an trait I don't see in even the biggest of Hollywood actors. Anyway about the actual film's story, the beginning had more comedic elements, I didn't understand some of the jokes, but that's okay because there is tons more to this film. I felt the first female character was completely unnecessary and the second one was acceptable but also not needed. The third actress, however, was GREAT! Nithya Mennon is her name, she and Vijay in the second half brought tears to my eyes repeatedly, I didn't expect to be so moved! I had similar reactions to some really heart-wrenching scenes in the first half as well, the film had lots of emotional power at its core. The film was unique to me in that Vijay's characters stood up so strongly against corruption, malpractices and deception by the medical industry, especially against the poor people- the people who need it the most but end up also losing the most in these scenarios. A new subject for me, handled so well. I'm not aware of what the medical policies for patients in India are like, do people always pay before the treatment or is that just certain types of hospitals? Some questions I would just ask my colleagues on Monday. Another thing was when Vijay's characters said certain dialogues, the crowd cheered and clapped a lot, especially during his speech scenes where he criticizes many injustices in front of large crowds in the film. Not only did the crowd in the film cheer strongly, so did my audience! It was as if I was in the film. And the action!! It was tremendous, lots of intense fight scenes with nice use of wire-work. Every hit by Mr. Vijay felt powerful with lots of emotions to it: these aren't your normal "beat up the bad guys because they're against you" fight scenes but rather they felt like a man who has had to go through so much emotional pain that every punch and kick roared of justice. And wow was the crowd happy and loud during these fights! Wonderful experience really, I laughed, cried and was also really fired up during the film. I'm interested to watch more of Vijay's films now and I will definitely anticipate when his next film releases.

A Ultimate Treat For Thamizhans Across The World!

I went in for the USA Premiere Show (FDFS) For The Much-Awaited Action Entertainer MERSAL. Oh god, the crowd was unbelievable! Everyone was set for a Diwali Treat:)

Firstly, the screen presence of THALAPATHY VIJAY, was absolutely amazing, for sure Vijay steals the show right from the title-card to the ending of the movie.

His Triple Role : Farmer, Doctor, Magician were all new get ups for Vijay and has he done well with these characters? 100% YES! Right From The "Mersal Arasan" To The Flashback Sequences Of The Leader Farmer, Thalapathy excels!

As Usual, he excels in his romance, dance, comedy and attitudes throughout the film which keep the audience entertained in each way.

The Story by Baahubali Writer "Vijayendra Prasad" was quite different even though it had some elements of an action Marsala film but Atlee's direction of the film keep it unique.

AR Rahman's BGM is merattal masss! He proves his Oscar winning award in Mersal, songs such as Aalaporaan Thamizhan and Neethanae bring out the audience a real taste of Mersal!

SJ Surya as a villain plays his role neatly (look out for his dialogues/scenes in the second half) a perfect suit for the movie - Stylish.

Also, actors such as Vadivelu and Sathyaraj stand out not just for their comedy but for their highly rated emotional scenes which Atlee narrates well. Vadivelu fanatics will leave the cinema with smiles on their faces:)

Heroines play their role superbly in each of Vijays Characters and so do other actors such as Sathyan, Kovai Sarala, Vikram Vedha's "Cheta" etc.

GK Vishnu has fantastic cinematography for a debut, thanks to Atlee for giving him an opportunity to see how perfectly he can do his job! Visuals in Aalaporaan Thamizhan and Many of the magician scenes excel, thalapathy is captured spot on!

Ruben the editor has done his job well, with neat cuts and editing to keep the movie at a smooth pace.

What can I say, a pure Thalapathy Vijay entertainer with high emotional/ mass scenes which will impress the audience of all type. A film for thamizhans to enjoy, so worth the wait? TOTALLY YES, go grab your tickets and have a great Diwali ahead!

A Persistent Mass Masala Flick -- Nothing More

Vijay's recent films a mixed bag, with a lot of good ones and a lot of extremely bad ones, but Mersal might stand out from this crowd as being almost entirely different from what he usually plays.

From his beautiful portrayal of the three roles that he suits up to his astounding screen presence, Vijay is a sure bet in any film. From a simple Farmer to a Magician, Vijay essays all his characters in style. AR Rahmaan's music was good, considering that he is one of the finest music directors in India, it's a kind of a let down for him. All the Heroines( Kajal, Samantha and Nithya ) essayed their roles perfectly, with almost no attachment that we feel to each character (pun intended). All the other roles were superbly done, especially by Sathyaraj and Kovai Sarala.

The Cinematography By GK Vishnu was not up to par, considering that Atlee usually pairs up with George C. Williams in the matter of cinematography. George knows how Atlee wants his film to be, where Vishnu fails miserable. Although he was able to scrap up a decent Masala-type atmosphere in every shot.

Vijayendra Prasad's story might have been the main attraction, considering that he wrote Baahubali, VP's script was lacking the need to explore different concepts, one thing he might have missed out. In a nutshell, the story is quite OK, just not into it.

From a seemingly OK 1st Half, the film stretches into a great Mass masala film. SJ Surya has done a exemplar job as the villain, providing Nail biting dialogues as well as a terrific job of acting out the ' Villain ' Scenes.

In short, Mersal is nothing more of a Mass Masala Flick ; the type that every Tamilian might have seen before.

Watch it for the Mass And Not For The Content.

Ignoring some logical loopholes and the film's length, the film is surely one of the best mass masala entertainer from Vijay and Kollywood in recent times.

Watched Mersal on First Day !! Ignoring some logical loopholes and the film's length, the film is surely one of the best mass masala entertainer from Vijay and Kollywood in recent times.

Pros: Performances b all characters,Characterization for each and everyone,Cinematography,Action Sequences,Emotional dialogues, Climax,Screenplay(maintained a slow but nice pace),Social Messages,Music and Editing.

Cons: Length and Loopholes

3 hours is a bit too much for any film. There are some logical loopholes but the best part about them is, you will only realize their existence after the film ends.

Cinematography is colorful(giving the tone for the film)and each frame is crystal-clear.It is done by GK.Vishnu.He makes his debut via Mersal.Action Sequences are very good, which includes magic tricks. They are interesting to watch.ARR songs are the best and the BGM is divine at times, esp. emotional scenes . Performances are very good, especially Vijay, Nithya Menen and Kaali Venkat's performances are very good. Kaali Venkat once again proves that he can also do character roles.Social messages in this film are very relevant to the current state of India. They also raise awareness about medical corruption in India.

Final note: Though the film's story is old,it's presentation makes it a treat to watch.TREAT A REAL TREAT TO WATCH !!!!!!

Average movie with good social message

Good message at climax Vijay boldly talk abt gst and other issues. But overall as a movie, content is very week. Vijay can give chance to other director who ve good story rather concentrating in politics. Father Vijay character is too good and interval block scene is good noting more. Other than Vijay only sj surya and nithya Menon got some scope.

Poorly written banger!

4 stars for acting, cinematography, songs and the thing you get in all movies by actor vijay. I wanted to give another star just to appreciate the effort to convey a social message. But then, unlike any other media, it focuses on giving one valuable blunt information. Things shown are greusome truth, truth that scared me. Until, you realize the other side of the story and that the director has a really poor knowledge and instantly found that he put no effort into researching/collecting facts and understanding things or about whatever the info that he wanted everyone to be aware of. Watch it for the extravagant music videos but the story disappointed me as to how it made me feel and think of the society at the end of the movie.

Mersal is overly clichéd oora-commercial film which appeals only for Vijay fans and for the rest, this one is passable entertainer.

Mersal (2017): Of all the terrific actors from Kollywood,I feel that Vijay is overrated. His performances are just average but he is excellent in dances.Till now I watched his best performances only in Thuppaki and Kaththi. In 2017,he already released Bairavaa, which is one of the worst movies of 2017.Now its time for Mersal which already achieved the status of highest grossing Tamil films and been in news with controversies as BJP raised objections to the scenes that referred to "GST" and "Demonetization".How is the movie? Plot: Maaran (Vijay) is a sincere doctor who does medication for free. Seeing his service, a renowned organization in Europe confers him with an award. This is also the time when a lookalike of Vetri (Vijay), who is a magician, kills one of the doctors who has come for the same award ceremony. As a result of this, Maaran gets arrested by the cops. Who is this Vetri? What does he have to do with Maaran? and what is the scam behind all these murders?. To know the answers, you need to watch the film on the big screen.

My Review: There's no escaping a feeling of deja vu when you watch an Atlee film. But that feeling has never been as strong as when one watches Mersal. The director must really have been Shankar's most diligent assistant.Ten minutes into Mersal and all you see is Shankar (and Murgadoss in parts), not just in terms of treatment, even in the tropes and plot points.

As you watch the film, it's like you're playing 'Spot the Original'. So when Maaran is taken away to jail to the sounds of a wailing crowd, you're thinking Sivaji. And when Vetri goes into flashback mode, about how a young girl dies due to the result of a corrupt system, you're thinking Anniyan. And again, when Thalapathy pulls down a water tanker to douse a major fire, you're thinking Baahubali or any Vijaykanth movie. The story is right out of Aboorva Sagotharargal. A father is brutally murdered. A son takes revenge. The other son is thought to be the killer.

In a sense, it feels like a compilation of sequences from earlier blockbusters.Even if you watch bits of it on television, you will have a hard time guessing which Vijay movie it is. All his movies look the same. But that doesn't make the film dislikable; in fact, it's quite enjoyable. For Vijay fans,Mersal is definitely a treat.Entire Paris episode looks lavishing but slow.Entry of Samantha evokes some laughter but it lasts for short time.Flashback episode is so long but it is one of the descent parts of the film with terrific performances from Vijay and Nithya Menon.

Vijay has played three roles that of a father and two sons. The movie entirely works on the charisma and performance of Vijay. He is in terrific form here. Some of the mass moments performed by Vijay would definitely make the audience whistle and clap. There are lot of political dialogues here which appeal for Vijay fans but don't they care for those who aren't his fans? Technically though, Mersal scores on most fronts. The visuals (by GK Vishnu) are terrific and AR Rahman's music chips in to make the overall 'product' worthy of a big festival release. There are several slo-mo shots which could have been edited to save half-n-hour of its 2hr50min runtime.

So,Mersal is overly clichéd oora-commercial film which appeals only for Vijay fans and for the rest, this one is passable entertainer.

Best Film of Vijay's Career and Best of 2017

Mersal is treat for anyone who enjoyed kaththi and thupakki because it contains the style and content as both films. This film can't be hated, *first of all, the story is a simple story but the execution was mind blowing. *The film can't be any better without Vijayendra Prasad the story/screenplay writer of the film. There some noticeable epic baahubali type of scenes in this movie which are the major plus points. *Dialogues of the film turned out really well especially dialogues about current situation of Indian government and medical system. *Cinemotography of the movie is chance less since the cinematographer is a debutante. Every frame was crystal clear and unique. *Two songs were unnecessary, but the rest two were visual treat for fans. *Vijay's screen presence was outstanding and one of the best in his career. *SJ Surya's character was redefined as stylish villain after Aravind Swamy. *Nithya Menon's role was perfect for the story and Divine. *Kajal and Samantha's role were just side roles and not so important but not irritating as well. *Kali Venkat's acting was mind blowing *Ar Rahmans BGM is the back bone of the film.It elevated many mass and emotional scenes to different level. *Sathyaraj/Kovai Sarala/Vadivelu's character were decent but Vadivelu tops it for the best. Conclusion: In overall, Mersal is one of the best Diwali Treat for true entertainment lovers. It is a true blockbuster after Thuppakki and Kaththi for Diwali. It is a must watch for all.

A good entertainer

in one sentence i could say Mersal is a visually beautiful and stylish entertainer with relevantsocial message ! Vijay shines his triple roles ; Emotional scenes,Mass scenes he just nailed it <3 film by film he is improving his acting skills n Entertaining Mass Stylish appeal <3 :) <3 in the case of heroines, for me Nithya Menen steals the show ,nice performance and dialogue delivery ,other Kajal and Samantha just did OK,small roles.

villein role is safe with S J Suryah ,nothing big to perform, still good direction by Atlee kumar is almost good ,mixture of commercial and social message together ;done well,he just fall behind in terms of execution and convincing area- just little bit.

long running time ,lack of convincing, unnecessary scenes- two songs in the first half is doesn't needed but good ones over all mersal is full of Entertainment ,Magical scenes, excellent Cinematography ,,especially in song scenes- composition by A.R. Rahman and beautiful Picturization by Atlee gave me Goosebumps, this film is a treat for Vijay fans and good entertainer for the audience! BLOCKBUSTER loading!

"Thalapathy Show All The Way"

'Atlee' has become a dependable brand with just 2 films 'Raja Rani' and 'Theri',both which were efficiently packed masala entertainers that managed to gain humongous success at the Kollywood box- office.Naturally, the expectations were sky-high from the combo of Vijay and Atlee who were expected to repeat the success of Theri, which I felt was to some extent a slightly better movie altogether on comparison with this much more predictable mass masala entertainer.

An elaborate affair running around 170 minutes,Mersal has all the ingredients that one conjoins with a festival entertainer, heavily relying upon the charisma of Vijay who ensures that the loopholes in the screenplay is overshadowed by his massive screen presence up to a good extent.K.Vijayendra Prasad who's known for his epic mass entertainers like 'Baahubali','Bajrangi Bhaijaan' and 'Samarasimha Reddy' has stick on to the basic formulas of a typical masala flick, the result being an average to above average cinematic experience in a nutshell.

Atlee's pattern of narrative reminded me of his mentor Shankar's 2006 blockbuster 'Shivaji',revamped with plot elements similar to A.R Murugadoss's Vijayakanth starrer 'Ramana'[2002] and a conclusion upon the lines of yet another Murugadoss flick Katthi [2014].The introductory portions of the movie was impressive followed by a slightly weaker 45-50 minutes which luckily ended with a thrilling interval block. The second half holds the flashback portion of 'Thalapathy' which is highly emotional and has moments to connect with the native audience in particular.

The fact that the easily predictable narrative could have been trimmed by at least 15-20 minutes cannot be blanked out and hadn't there been a solid performance by Thalapathy Vijay as the saving grace, the movie could have been rather a mediocre experience altogether. The plethora of hard-hitting punch dialogues added with a good social message towards the end was effective in increasing the emotional connect of the movie.

As mentioned before Vijay was at his awesome best throughout the movie and succeeded in portraying the roles entrusted on him with required perfection. The pick among the female cast was Nithya Menon who shined with an energetic performance.Samantha and Kajal Agarwal didn't have much role to play except for being part in two songs that didn't make any impact in the narrative whatsoever.'Vaigai Puyal' Vadivelu gave an impressive supporting performance .S J Surya's villain role was too stereotypical and lacked necessary detailing.

Songs by maestro A.R.R ranged from mediocre to good with the pick among the songs being 'Aalaporaan Tamizhan' and 'Nee Thaane' that were picturized well by Atlee. The background score of the movie wasn't exceptional but nonetheless decent.Frames by debutante G K Vishnu were catchy and edits by Ruben was fine in general.

Overall,Mersal is a satisfactory festive flick that ensures a paisa vasool one time watch for those who have a taste for masala entertainers.

An intriguing revenge thriller

Mersal is a simple story told in the grandest way possible. While the film certainly has its flaws, it has effortlessly been vanquished by an interesting screenplay. The film is hugely benefited by the stylish direction of Atlee. Certainly, the film is nothing new in term of its content but the way its story has been executed, makes it stand out.

The whole film is a celebration of the charisma of Vijay. He is outstanding in a triple role, especially his role of wrestler Vetrimaaran was exceptionally played. Nithya is wonderful in her role. Kajal and Samantha are just to fill the spaces. Justin Selvaraj is magnificent in the role of the corrupt doctor. His mannerism is peerless. There was a certain cold-blooded gleam in his eye which gave her character a new altitude. Vadivelu is good as always.

The film is overly long and needs to be trimmed. There are some questionable editing choices in the film. Runtime is indisputably a big drawback of this film.

Atlee is here in its full form. He directs the film with his full energy. Another winner for his career.

The film keeps you entertained for almost its entire run-time. It has a good message too but in the rabble of masala, it has lost its intensity. If a little more attention would have been paid to the script, the film might have attained a different level. While the film manages to entertain you for most of its run-time, it never really tries to emphasise on something which is new and has never been explored earlier, which sadly is a mighty drawback in itself.

Nevertheless, it is a nice entertainer and is a must watch for Vijay fans. Even if you are not his, the film manages to entertain for most of the time. A good one-time watch...

Boring

It's one of worst films of vijay. It's total boring illogical film. Don't waste your time on watching this. The main blame is on director Atlee who is copy cat. He copied concepts and scenes from old movies, and modified it to look like an original film. Die heart vijay fans no matter what will love the film. Strictly for vijay fans.

A must watch festival bonanza !!!

The only reason I gave 10 for this movie is it gave me all the ingredients that I wanted this Diwali. It has its flaws... But it's a perfect festive treat for everyone. The non linear screenplay was well handled. The characters were designed to the point... Kajal agarwal's character was actually not needed. Brilliant music from ARR. Clinical direction from Atlee.. He has mastered the packaging of a old used to script in an engaging way. Vijay was brilliant as usual and the dance, stunt and dialogues are OMG moments. Lot of current issues have been discussed. Hats off to the effort. Special mention to SJ Surya.. There was a goosebumps moment when he delivers the 30 years later dialogue. Over all... A happy Diwali for movie watchers
