A moving portrait of a family seeing each other as they are

This movie really spoke to me as someone who has dealt with mental illness in my own immediate family. It's a thoughtful exploration about how trying to fix someone is much less effective - and sometimes even less compassionate - then just seeing them for who they are, in all their complexities, and taking things from there. Of course, it's also about learning to setting boundaries in dealing with that person, and taking care of yourself so you can be as helpful as possible without harming your own journey though life. And, finally, being aware of how it affects other relationships in your family, which can be hard to see. Great performances, and a really lovely score too.

Vibrant!

Engaging story about family and mental illness - beautifully acted and shot- I whole heartedly recommend!

The story draws you in to a young woman's life, just as she is reaching adulthood - who, on top of all the typical struggles of finding employment and love, is also figuring out how to deal with voices and visions that are haunting and her. The film crafts its narrative between sympathizing with the young, vibrant woman and following her on her bouts of schizophrenia. It deals with the delicate struggle of her older sister, torn between love for the person she knows is there, and frustration with the madness that she can't ignore or solve. The movie was thoughtful, engaging, and touching, and I recommend.

Draws you in

"Good Side of Bad" is such a powerful movie. The story pulls you in right away with its real, emotional characters, and you can't help but feel invested in their journeys. It does an amazing job showing what it's like to deal with mental health challenges, whether you're going through it yourself or watching someone you care about struggle.

Lexie's performance is incredible-she's so relatable and raw. You really feel every bit of her pain and strength, and it's hard not to get emotional watching her.

This movie isn't just something you watch; it sticks with you. It's a beautifully told story that makes you think and feel. If you've ever dealt with mental health issues or supported someone who has, this movie will hit home in the best way.

Compelling, raw and true

The actors gave such revealing performances about the realities of mental illness, the necessity of our loved ones supporting us and the challenges we face supporting one another when we share unfinished conflict.

This story is an important one to share so that we can accept mental illness as sort of our common thread. This is the only way we can begin to heal it.

Lexi Simonsen's performance was raw and heartbreaking as she combines the frustration of being misunderstood with the fear of not knowing what is actually real or what direction to go.

Jules Bruff's performance as the centerpiece of the family rang so true in her portrayal of the deafening dedication it takes to hold a struggling family together.

Masterful performances. Compelling story.

Great sibling film

Loved this movie. Just a great film about the power of the sibling relationship. Reminded me of "You Can Count on Me" but with a bigger mental health crisis. (Maybe like "David and Lisa" meets "You Can Count on Me?") Wonderful performances + direction and a great tone. Same actress / director duo did "Part Time Fabulous," also a fantastic film. Check it out if you haven't seen it. It's heartening to see indie films like this getting made! Reminds me of the heyday of indies back when I was in college :) The sibling actors had excellent chemistry. They really felt like sibs! I had the chance to see this one in the theater and loved it. Bought it on Amazon for my collection.

Love can heal even the deepest wounds...

Good Side of Bad is a raw, heartfelt exploration of family, mental illness, and the power of connection. The story pulls you in as three siblings come together to navigate an incredibly difficult situation, forcing them to confront their past and redefine their relationships.

The older sister's character stood out to me-her performance was deeply moving, capturing both the strength and vulnerability of someone trying to hold it all together. Every scene felt so real, like peeking into the lives of people you know.

This film isn't just about struggle; it's about finding light in dark places and how love can heal even the deepest wounds. It left me with a sense of hope and reminded me of the importance of family. Definitely worth watching.

Heartfelt and realistic

This captivating indie film is a heartfelt story of how a normal family realistically deals with mental illness. Based on a book by the same name, the main character draws you into the inner workings of her schizophrenia so that you really do feel like you understand how her brain sees what it does. The sister/mother character is so empathic I just want to hug her and the brother - he is played just like a typical older brother usually is. I love how this movie seems like it's told by the "family next door" and it's captivating enough to make you want more when it ends. And since I need 24 more characters.

Beautifully written and acted!

Good Side of Bad is a poignant story about the impacts of mental illness on an entire family. Against the backdrop of younger sister Florence's schizophrenia diagnosis and struggles with treatment, older sister Sara steps in to support Florence while trying to shake off the doldrums of midlife and their brother Peter tries to balance the responsibility of caring for their aging mother with the increasing demands of Florence's deteriorating mental state. The delicate balance of trying to care for yourself while simultaneously taking care of a family member is a painful struggle that most can relate to and/or will eventually experience, and Good Side of Bad, while showing how difficult and demanding mental illness can be also reminds us to appreciate the good times and to cherish the strong connections in our lives.

Heartfelt and Worthwhile

Good Side of Bad portrays an extremely honest and nuanced relationship between three adult siblings working through hardship together. Their arguments, banter, and expressions of care for one another are beautiful to watch. Coming from a family that faces similar mental health challenges, I could see myself in the characters. The yoga scene captured the way I speak to my own adult siblings. The film showcases family in a way that I rarely see on screen. Bruff's performance as Sara especially stands out, as she navigates her role as caretaker while learning to care for herself. Overall, the film is beautiful and certainly worth watching.

A Family Disease

Good Side of Bad is a brilliant and unsentimental portrayal of how mental illness (and, incidentally, alcoholism) is best understood as a family disease. By looking at the disease, and telling the story, through the experiences of the sister, brother, and mother of the designated patient, it avoids the common tropes of triumph, or rescue, that render so many stories about mental illness unconvincing. The pathetic failure of institutional efforts to treat mental illness as a purely medical problem addressed by medication, and creation of a controlled community, separate from family and environment, makes understandable the patients' efforts to heal themselves by subverting, rather than following, the coercive and unfeeling efforts to "fix" them.

There are no stars in this movie. Every character is convincing as a flawed human being struggling with the many different ways mental illness impacts their lives. The arc of the story reveals no solutions. Only that this family disease is best addressed by family responses.

And while there are no stars, this reviewer was in awe of Tess Harper, whose performance, 40 years ago, gave all the heart to Tender Mercies. Here, in a completely different role, she reflected all the pain from another family disease.

Indie Filmmaking at its very best!

"Good Side of Bad" is a heartfelt and powerful film that explores mental health and family bonds with authenticity. Lexi Simonsen delivers a deeply moving performance, capturing the complexities of her character with nuance and sincerity. Jules Bruff and Alex Quijano also shine, bringing emotional depth to their roles as devoted siblings. Director Alethea Root handles the subject matter with sensitivity, balancing intensity with warmth. While the film stays focused on its central theme, it offers a realistic and touching portrayal of resilience and love. A must-watch for those who appreciate strong performances and character-driven storytelling.

A must see, heartwarming, informative, film diving into family struggles.

Family - represents love, support, and togetherness, but also one that, for many, can come with very deep emotional struggles and complexities. This film dives deep into these difficulties and brings to light the importance of discussing mental health. And the painful reality of what makes a family whole. The film explores how a family struggles with divisions, each member grappling with their own battles. This film exploration, but it is not just about highlighting the difficulties of family dynamics, but also about bringing awareness to the importance of mental health. This film carries a powerful reminder: family is not always perfect, but it's in our imperfections, in our struggles and in our healing, that we find out what truly holds us together. And that's what makes a family.

Perfect Family Drama

Good Side of Bad is a beautiful exploration of family, mental illness, and the power of just showing up. It is the story of three siblings coming together to navigate a very difficult reality, forcing them to confront their past and redefine their relationships. This film really hit home for me. Living with a sibling with mental illness can be such a challenge. The relationship between the two sisters is so messy and moving. Jules Bruff and Lexi Simonsen's performances draw the viewer right into the reality of this world. This is more than a film about mental illness, its about family connections and what it takes to keep them.

An indepth understanding of a family dealing with schizophrenia

This film is exceptional in presenting the perspectives of all those in a family dealing with schizophrenia. We watch as the characters face the challenges of coming to a happy equilibrium when a member of the family falls into deep psychosis. We see how each person perceives the illness and how they learn to come to grips with it. An excellent film for families with newly diagnosed members as well as for anyone wanting a better understanding of the challenges of living with mental health problems. Not since A Beautiful Mind have we seen psychosis described so vividly. The film brings hope and understanding of mental health issues and is a must see for anyone who knows anyone with mental health issues. The acting is superb as each character is developed and evolved over the course of the film.

"A Powerful and Poignant Portrayal of Schizophrenia and Family Resilience

This film navigates the complexities of schizophrenia and its impact on families with grace, never shying away from hard truths. The characters are fully developed, allowing us to experience their struggles, hopes, and emotions. The direction is stunning, and the breathtaking scenery enhances the film's depth. It portrays mental illness with honesty and sensitivity, making it both a moving drama and an important commentary on mental health. I deeply connected with the story and its characters, finding it both heartbreaking and inspiring. A beautifully crafted and emotionally powerful film. I recommend it.

A stirring indie triumph, hard-won

There's something rare about Good Side of Bad-a film that never announces its importance, but earns it scene by scene. Directed with clear-eyed sensitivity by Althea Root, the film invites us into a fractured family dynamic without judgment, sensationalism, or sentimentality. It simply tells the truth, and in doing so, it hits hard.

At the center is a trio of compelling performances. Tess Harper, a veteran of emotionally weighty roles, brings a weary grace to the role of the family matriarch. Her scenes carry the quiet authority of someone who's endured more than she says aloud. Jules Bruff is equally strong as the sister trying to hold everything together. And then there's Lexi Simonson, whose turn as the youngest sibling in crisis is nothing short of revelatory. In her hands, the character is unpredictable, aching, and alive-reminding us of how rare it is to see mental illness portrayed with such immediacy and nuance. Simonson doesn't play "troubled," she is troubled, and we feel every spike and spiral.

Despite its title, there is little good side here, and this is not film that offers tidy closure. Instead, there is something deeper: the authenticity of experience, told with compassion and care.

This is a film for those who have lived it-or who want to understand.
