The good , the bad, the awesome:
the good: VISUALS / VFX / MUSICS are seriously amazing!
the bad: turn this super short into 3 parts is a bad idea. the story is just ... nhaaa ... there is almost none.
the awesome: IF you watch this short like a video clip, THEN you get a masterpiece. It is one of the best "exercise of style" i have ever seen.
thanks for this, i get a very good time watching Blood Machines. You really need to give us more! SO Much more!

The imagery and atmosphere of this mini-series is jaw-dropping. Think Blade Runner meets Mandy meets Star Wars, and you'll have an idea (sort of) of what this is.
Beyond that, the plot is borderline nonsensical. It has to do with an AI manifesting as a weird demigod entity, and I'm sure there's some kind of commentary embedded in it that has to do with humanity's relationship to machines/religion/etc., but it's way too abstract.
Ultimately, this movie is best experienced as a visual feast, and that's about it. If you try to extract anything larger from it, you'll get caught up in an endless game of "maybe this is symbolism" that doesn't really go anywhere.
I'd love to see what this director could do with a well written script.

I like the 80's vibes, music, production art and design is superb, even actors are pretty cool and it all could have gone as smooth as "Beyond the Aquila Rift " , but the script is below average and that is where I'd want to put a 7 but I'll put a 6, if you are into spaceship sci fi and art , you will enjoy it in a certain way, everyone else will just see flashy lights...

IMO it would've been much better if it were released without all the dialog and interaction between the characters. As a music video akin to Turbo Killer, it's really nice. As a full-fledged movie, it's pretty bad.

I'm sure Seth Ickerman was trying to say something here about patriarchal control over women and machine and how they are alike. If it was any more than that then it was probably lost to bong resin. Visually it's like a Heavy Metal magazine made kinky After Effects sex to a prog rock album cover. I mean that in the best possible way. Narratively it tries a little too hard to mean something but without actually saying anything, like bad anime fan fiction, or just anime period. I'll keep an eye on Ickermans career... hopefully he let's other people do the writing... or at least gets better at it. Direction.. I dont know, give him a decent script.. and I'll make my call then. Eventhough my opinion doesn't really matter.
I'm glad this exists I just wish it was better. .

Okay, so it's got lots of female nudity. And weird inverted crosses. And pentagonal roses? And the coolest laser guns I've seen since laser guns were put in movies. And sweet space ship designs. And a monstrously impressive sound track. And absolutely no coherent script to explain much of any of this. Something something machine revolt? Feminist power? I don't know.
It's like a 14 year old dropped acid and made his fantasies into a featurette. Except with a better FX budget and musical score.
Well worth a watch, just expect a long form experimental music video instead of an actual story. And what a music video it is.
(I'd also recommend people check out the music video for Turbo Killer elsewhere (you can guess where) to get more-of-the-same, but in a SFW and shorter form)

This needed to be 30 minutes overall. The vfx and atmosphere were great, but there was no coherent story. I still didn't understand what was really going on in there.

Appallingly bad dialogue, cookie cutter tropes and some overdirected performances all played dead straight for 50minutes. As a piece of storytelling it's simply terrible, but the effects look cool and well made and Carpenter Brut's music slaps. It'll give it a 5 for those as a pity score cause otherwise this is really dull and pathetic to watch.

The plot is thin, almost nonexistent (2/10) acting is over and wooden. Visual style is very original, creative and amazing (10/10). Beats standard unimaginative Marvel blockbusters in that respect.
This feels more like demo than finished film. Creator should get good writer, story and maybe director before creating the next movie. There is only so far you can go with only visuals.

This smacks of the old pretentious 1980's scifi films but is way more bonkers.
Expect flying naked women, spinning forehead computers and a main protagonist that has more than a whiff of space-nazi about him.
There is no story just some stuff that happens around some really two-dimensional characters, none of which makes much sense.
But if you enter this with the correct expectations then this is actually pretty good.
The effects are great, the plonky Casio-keyboard soundtrack is entertaining, and interesting stuff happens.
For someone who grew up with cheap 80's scifi this feels quite nostalgic and was a nice change of pallet.
If you scroll down the reviews you will find a fairly equal amount of critics branding this Feminist Propaganda or Misogynistic rubbish.
Now I am not saying that the two are mutually exclusive but hats off to the account manager who gets such a project green lit.
A great visual spectacle but if you are expecting a "Space Hunter" or "Ice Pirates" then you are going to be really disappointed.

Really bad drawn out acting. No real story just a few strange scenes that give you no real info. it doesn't at any point try to build a rapport with the watcher. no actual science fiction, just flashy lights, wires and anything the creator thought looked spacey.
on the other hand, if you're into confusing 80s sci fi music videos with lots of naked women running round, then give it a watch.

This film is unapologetic when confronting the extra terrestrial frontier ark. its tough to make these films aimed away from the general audience - as it would sacrifice a larger potential for profit, but i appreciate the exclusivity. may it inspire further creations on par with it and provide the platform for the matured science fiction audience deserved for this future's foundation.

The gist of Blood Machines is "men abusive, men bad; women gentle; women good."
I know that seems like a crude way to sum up the film, but that's pretty much how it plays out.
The special effects -- for this to be a Kickstarted film -- really do put a lot of bigger budget Hollywood films to shame. It's mostly to do with the intricate attention to detail and physics, which make the world feel weighty and dangerous. It's just such a shame that what little dialogue we do get and what little character development we do see take place is basically to push a pro-feminist message.
It would have been so much cooler had the film been about actual villains trying to capture the souls of ships, and unbeknownst to the bounty hunters, they had no idea that the ships they were collecting had souls. At least then they could have molded a sympathetic redemption arc around the bounty hunters, having the Captain warm to the audience and to the space druid, Corey.
But instead the first season of three episodes beats audiences over the head with what's essentially a feminist revenge tale against men and their destructive weapons.
The '6' out of '10' ratings is basically for the effects, visual presentation and for Carpenter Brut's undeniably awesome soundtrack.
It's quite unfortunate because I really had high hopes for this one.

...but it is nowhere near coherent as a story. If there was just music and no dialog it would have been great. The acting is just horrible. Very drawn out and forced. More like a couple kids making a movie with no planning whatsoever. Just the acting, mind you. The visuals are decent, but not very well done. Too much Vaseline on the lens to hide the, I'm sure, myriad defects in art. I'm not even sure why they even have real people in here, as their performances (I use that term very loosely) add nothing to this, it actually detracts more than add. Also, why is this split up? It makes no sense to make three 10-15 minute "episodes".
Meh.
Meh.

Well, I can't say I was misled by the poster art. Blood Machines is everything it promised to be: a deep, dark splash of tripped-out outer-space mayhem, bold and loud and dirty like an after-hours Cinemax special with a huge, dedicated VFX team. It's a total sensory delight, no matter how poorly-acted and incomprehensible the story might be.
Music is a huge part of what makes this whole show operate, which is no surprise since it's a spiritual (if not literal) sequel to a music video from the same artist, director and production house. Carpenter Brut isn't a household name, but his particular brand of darkwave synth caught my ear a few years ago and that's what ultimately drew me to this film. The entire visual approach hinges on that style, adapting his grungy, sinister, 80s-influenced sound into a perfectly-paired series of distressed, threatening, neon-hued scenes and settings. Occasionally, it overexerts in the pursuit of deliberately edgy material (tons of T&A and blasphemous imagery in this one), but as it's already a pastiche of styles from an era where such envelope-pushing was common, if not actively encouraged, that seems appropriate. Distracting and snicker-inducing, sure, but also fitting.
I couldn't tell you much about the plot. It seems intentionally ambiguous, merely a vehicle to shift our perspective from one complex piece of shifting, shining, shaking computer-generated havoc to the next. The dialogue and acting are also afterthoughts, and overlooking those can be a bit trickier. Those seeking a thick dose of pure indulgence need look no further: Blood Machines is a conceptual marvel, an overfilled cup of fresh ideas and dramatic execution. Maybe if you're high enough, the other stuff won't matter.

A higher budgeted fan film? A very long music video? A gorgeous montage of dynamic screensavers? Whatever you want to call it, 'Blood Machines' audiovisual presentation is undeniably entrancing.
The outline: When the spirit of a young woman emerges from a spaceship, two hunters set off on a galactic chase... The story is a bit messy, and it's too short to make much sense, but it made me interested in seeing more of it; to get answers to many questions.
And it's visually stunning; when paired with an electronic score this good, it's easy to forgive its shortcomings and appreciate the obvious affection for the films and styles that influenced its young filmmaker.
Overall, 'Blood Machines' is a phantasmagorical plunge into deep-space, with glorious colours of greens, purples, pinks, and blues all coalescing into an optical overload. The senses are assaulted, heads will be scratched, and you'll see things you never even imagined: a nude woman gliding through space with a glowing, inverted cross on her abdomen... yeah, didn't think so.
7/10

I've never heard of anybody involved in the making of this.
It seems that a lot of the contributors wore multiple hats to get this done.
I could give it more than a 7 but it was too short, I am used to feature length movies. As an effort, it was quite good, you will never know what will transpire until the end. The VFX was good but of course not Hollywood blockbuster good but the aesthetics were more innovative. The story was OK, I think some of the elements had been seen before so this was a medley of multiple stories put together. As everyone else has said, the soundtrack was fantastic. It was very entertaining. I definitely recommend it to any scifi fan. We need to encourage this kind of work.

I was so looking forward to this movie. I love sci-fi, I love 80s synth and I love trippy imagery.
This move is so bad though! The acting is beyond terrible. The story is non existent and something a child could write. It's just so bad but not in the good way. But put some naked ladies in there and that will make up for it? Nope!
Terrible movie and such a shame as it will probably put people off from trying this again.
Could have been so good with a better cast and better plot
Only good thing was the visuals in some parts of it. The ship design was cool

That's how a Science Fiction should look like in my opinion... I followed the project over the years and helped funding it. Visually impressive, the actors are all quite good and the music by Carpenter Brut fits perfectly. Was great fun to watch and will watch it again and again!

I just watched this three episode - chapter "movie" and i liked it .
It was a visual retrowave fest , like a mix between Cronenberg , Lynch and Vitalic , or something like that ..its experimental and very different and that's why i liked it .
The colors glow all over the place and fits very well with the electroclash-retrowave sound . The special effects are trully fun to watch and makes this film trully unique .
The story is not to be taken too seriously since it tends to have some humour in it , not taking itself too seriously and the acting is quite amateurish but the action compensate with fantastic visuals and good electro music , and makes it feel like a three chapter long retrowave videoclip with amazing colors and fun special effects with weird creative shapes and forms making it a very different Sci Fi movie .
I feel that the message in this film is complexified by the lack of seriousness but still ....the end could be interpretated different ways , preconception or feminism's wet dream , who knows , but the spaceships are living organism , one male , the other female . Male ship goes on this planet , sees another ship that seems to be broken and investigate ...male than meets female , female seems telepathic and wants to leave this planet ...i'll let you see the rest because i don't want to leave spoilers .
I seriously think it's worth watching just for the visual and music , try to be open minded and don't see this as serious sci fi but more like an experimental pseudo-comedy with amazing special effect with visual and music that feels to fit together and if you can , smoke something really good before (shatter, weed, gummies, brownies or anything to enhance this already trippy film ...i could imagine this three chapter film on mushroom O.O woww !

Preface: I watched this on shudder and feel there's a chance they screwed up. It was 3, perhaps 15min long, episodes that didn't seem to flow.
As a movie: it's not good. Terrible acting. You have no real idea of who the caraters are, why they are in the situation and what the objective of their mission is. And why does his Lazer blaster drip and fire in odd directions? Franz Solo sucks!
As an elongated music video: IT'S RAD! Wonderful visuals, colors, and flow to an AWESOME album by Bruit.
Perhaps there will be more episodes or they will fix what feels like bad editing/coding for the streaming service and it will be much better.

Having been a fan of Carpenter Brut's video Turbo Killer, I was really intrigued by Seth Ickerman's vision. Blood Machines is not terribly coherent or fits the mold of any preset story archetype, but it sure is imaginative.
I felt like I was watching a weird science fiction fetish film drenched in neon while the film was seeking to replicate a full on acid trip. It was successful in that venture, even though the plot is pretty barebones. All you need to know is the fact rogue AI is really a naked woman with an anti-Christ cross on her body.
I suppose a smarter mind can go into the bizarre feminist theory associated with this short film, fleshing out the finer points that weak men will always lose while the apparent bondage of AI can be akin to sexual liberation and the right to choose. But alas I am not smart enough to go deeply into such subjects. So enjoy the wild visuals and listen to Carpenter Brut if you haven't.

Music amazing, and the imagery original and strong too
Not much of a story, but did there need to be?
