Nintendo Switch 2 Direct: Donkey Kong Bonanza Gameplay Looks Suspiciously Similar to a Goty PS5 Game
Image
Nintendo just wrapped up its latest Direct, finally revealing the much-rumored Nintendo Switch 2. But while new hardware is exciting and all, it was the gameplay footage of Donkey Kong Bananza that really had people scratching their heads. This isn’t just a case of “Oh, the graphics look different” or “Wow, they actually let Donkey Kong wear pants now,” they didn’t, relax.

No, something about the way the game moved, the way our beloved tie-wearing ape navigated its vibrant world, it felt eerily familiar. Nintendo fans, bless their banana-hoarding hearts, were quick to celebrate the return of Dk in a fully 3D adventure. Announced for release on July 17, 2025, Donkey Kong Bananza marks the character’s first fully 3D platforming adventure since Donkey Kong 64.

However, some players had a sneaking suspicion that they’d played this game before, on a completely different console.

Manga, Manhwa, & Manhua: What Are the Differences?

In recent years, the international popularity of manga has led to an increased interest in manhwa and manhua. Manga, manhwa, and manhua sound the same and, generally speaking, are similar in artwork and layout, which can result in accidentally categorizing these comics as all being Japanese in origin. The question of what manhwa and manhua is a frequent refrain, especially given that one of these has historically been kept out of the West.

However, there are several subtle but important differences between the three. This can be noted in the art styles of the creators involved, not to mention the country-exclusive names. Since there is so much anime being produced today,...

10 Retro Anime That Could Shine with a Studio Ghibli-Style Remake
Image
As more and more time passes, retro anime continues to fall out of the public eye. Anime that were once the pinnacle of their time fall into obscurity. However, this doesn't need to be the end of such anime. All it would take to return them to popularity is a proper remake, perhaps even one by Studio Ghibli.

Although the studio typically creates their own works, they're no stranger to creating films for other franchises. One of their earliest works is Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro, bringing the gentleman thief Lupin more attention as he steals the audience's hearts. Studio Ghibli could revitalize other retro anime with a movie, if that was something they chose to do.

A Bizarre Jurassic Park Theory Connects It to an Iconic 61-Year-Old Sci-Fi Series
Image
Quick Links How Astro Boy Predicted the Jurassic Park Series Was Jurassic Park Based On "Dinosaur Dilemma?" How Jurassic Park Built Upon a Legacy of Dinosaur Stories

Jurassic Park is one of the most influential stories in modern mythology, but a bizarre theory connects it to an iconic 61-year-old sci-fi series. Inspiration often comes from unexpected places. Without Akira Kurosawa's films, Star Wars might have been a very different story. Similarly, The Lion King is said to have been inspired by Kimba the White Lion and It! The Terror From Beyond Space reportedly inspired Alien. These examples raise questions about the fine line between homage, inspiration, and convergent evolution in pop culture. In the case of Jurassic Park, while it emerged as a defining blockbuster of the '90s, its origins may be traced back decades earlier to the legendary anime Astro Boy.

Debuting in 1952, Astro Boy (or Mighty Atom...

Image
Astro Bot's success in the few short months it's been released has been nothing short of spectacular. Players were quick to fall in love with the cute robot and the vibrant, breathtaking worlds which he explores in search of his crew. The abundance of creativity and charm on display in every facet of Astro Bot makes its recent success at The Game Awards all the more clear. In fact, Astro Bot's claim of the top prize only cemented the title as one of the best offerings currently available on PlayStation 5.

However, this victory may be more important than it first seemed. The huge success that Astro Bot has seen is the sign Sony has needed for years to dip...

The Game Awards 2024 has come and gone, leaving in its wake a trail of jubilant winners, gracious losers, and… tears? In a surprising turn of events, it seems that not everyone took their losses in stride at this year’s ceremony. As the dust settles on “gaming’s biggest night,” a peculiar story has emerged from the front row of the Peacock Theater, involving the team behind one of the year’s most celebrated titles.

Black Myth: Wukong Losing Goty to Astra Bot Will Get No Sympathy After Dev’s Meltdown: ‘I came here for nothing’
Image
The 2024 Game Awards ended with Sony’s Astro Bot winning the Game of the Year (Goty) title, and this has left many fans and developers divided. Feng Ji, CEO of Game Science and producer of Black Myth: Wukong, took to social media to express his feelings.

Feng Ji expressed disappointment at Wukong not winning Goty and claimed to have prepared an acceptance speech two years prior. This in particular has sparked controversy, humor, and critique. It really takes away from the criticism of the criteria of The Game Awards and what truly defines the best game.

Every Xbox Announcement From The Game Awards 2024

The Game Awards came with a lot of new announcements for Xbox players, and the list is staggering. While there were rumors of some, many were completely new and were unexpected. There were so many that it was hard to keep up with them, but they were definitely worth going back to and checking on again.

Every game announced seems like it will do incredibly well. There's a lot of hope that there will be no delays for games where release dates were given, but that could always be the case. For now, the fans are just lucky to have gotten mentions of what there is to keep an eye out for and what's coming in the future.

The Game Awards has become the gaming industry’s equivalent of the Oscars, a stage where innovation, artistry, and impact are celebrated. The 2024 Game Awards concluded with Sony’s Astro Bot taking home the coveted Game of the Year (Goty). But did it really deserve it over the other nominees?

Nominations for the 2024 Game Awards, which honor the year’s most innovative, unique and impactful story-driven narratives in the gaming industry, were announced Monday.

Power Rangers Star Wars-Inspired Season Even Had Its Own Version Of The Force
Image
One of the best things about the Power Rangers franchise is how it can explore different genres and settings within the same world, and the show even had its version of Star Wars. From 1993 to 1995, the Power Ranges universe followed the Mighty Morphin team as they went to school and saved the world from Rita Repulsa or Lord Zedd. This formula did not change much from Mmpr to Zeo or even from Zeo to Turbo. However, the show would change forever in 1998 with Power Rangers in Space.

While it is considered a Zordon Era show, Power Rangers in Space was unlike all the other seasons that had come before it. On the one hand, we were still following most of the Turbo cast, except that now T.J., Ashley, Cassie, and Carlos needed new powers. On the other hand, In Space brought in a brand-new Red Ranger and took place primarily outside of Earth.

10 Years After Its Release, New Bloodborne Lore Could Have Big Story Implications
Image
Despite very little being done with the IP since its first game ten years ago, Bloodborne still remains a firm favorite among fans. Some Soulsborne players claim that this game is the best of the bunch, still beating out Elden Ring and anything from the Darks Souls series thanks to its faster combat and unique, gothic, bloody setting. Ten years later, Bloodborne still has a vice grip on the same audience it introduced itself to on the PS4, and despite no new title or project in the series, more lore has come from an unlikely source.

Thanks to its popularity and cult status, Sony has claimed Bloodborne as an integral part of its library. Doing anything with the IP has proved tricky; however, since FromSoftware has been busying itself with making Game of the Year winners like Sekiro and Elden Ring. Although many other PlayStation exclusives have received PC ports of late,...

Manga artist Naoki Urasawa has scooped out about the intense personal struggles he faced when starting his series Pluto, a reimagining of Osamu Tezuka’s iconic Astro Boy storyline The Greatest Robot on Earth. Overlapping with the Netflix anime adaptation of Pluto, Urasawa publicized the effect the project had on his psyche and creative process.

The manga was published in 2003, which made a departure from the more optimistic tone of Tezuka’s original work. It dived more into the darker themes of conflict, artificial intelligence (AI), and the nature of humanity. His candid reflections offered a rare sight of the psychological toll he had to endure while adapting such an influential piece.

The Weight of Legacy

Naoki Urasawa first encountered The Greatest Robot on Earth at the tender age of five, and describes the story as “the manga that sat at the center of all manga in my heart.

Why Does Nintendo Get a Free Pass From Criticism From So Many Gaming Journalists?
Image
Nintendo first gained international recognition in 1981 after the release of Donkey Kong. That escalated to newer heights with the main protagonist of the Mushroom Kingdom, who became the mascot for the company following its popularity. New characters then joined the party, including Link, Kirby, Pikachu, and more.

Many of those characters will give nostalgia to the fans who used to play the games created by the company. Maybe that’s why they are delivering fun to the gamers by repackaging nostalgia in the form of characters like Mario and Zelda today.

Nintendo, Mario, and Zelda Makes a Great Trio But it Needs a Break

The term Nintendo is said to have the meaning ‘leave luck to heaven’. They aren’t really adhering to it; instead, they have left their luck to characters like Mario or Zelda. There’s a variety of them, but these two can be seen walking around...

Blue Ant Media’s Carlyn Staudt and Jon Penn Break Down the Asia TV Scene, Business Opportunities in an Industry Slowdown and Life Without Beach House Pictures (Exclusive)
Image
Carlyn Staudt, who has previously overseen the growth of Blue Ant Media’s Love Nature channel, travels to the Apos conference for the first time in her new role as the company’s EVP of global channels and streaming. Together with Jon Penn, the group’s MD for Asia Pacific, she takes stock of the corporate restructurings that include the disposal of Beach House Pictures and the establishment of a sales hub in Asia, as well as analyzing the business opportunities at a moment of industry turmoil.

Explain the thinking behind the Asian hub

Staudt: I joined Blue Ant seven years ago to expand its channel offering around the globe, and launched love nature, which was at the time, a fledgling natural history service, for SVOD only. We’ve expanded it around the globe to over 100 countries and had success on multiple different platforms, pay-tv, VOD, Fast. That helped feel...

Astro Bot: How To Defeat Enemies With The Tripcaster (What A Trip Trophy)
Image
To unlock the Platinum Trophy in Astro Bot, players will need to unlock the secret What a Trip! trophy. This trophy involves defeating seven enemies with the Tripcaster, one of the many weapons available to Aloy, the protagonist of Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West. To unlock this trophy, players must find Aloy in Astro Bot and unlock the Horizon-themed Machine Learning level.

Machine Learning unlocks once players defeat the boss in the Feather Cluster, the last and perhaps least impressive of Astro Bot's five clusters. Other levels based on PlayStation IP do appear, and they all have secret trophies; for instance, the Ape Escape-themed Apes on the Loose level features a secret Golden Butterfly that can be caught. However, the Tripcaster works quite differently in Astro Bot compared to the Horizon games.

The level starts, as with all other Astro Bot levels, with the player landing in the world using their glider. The landing site itself hints at how bananas the rest of the adventure is going to be. Dealing with some enemies and crossing the bridge,...

‘Astro Bot’ Review: Elevated State of Play
Image
Somehow, in defiance of reason, Astro Bot has been PlayStation’s best kept secret, seemingly only trotted out when Sony has new technology to show off. As far back as 2013’s The Playroom, when the little guy was tasked with acting as a digital concierge for the PlayStation Camera and the DualShock 4 controller on the occasion of the PS4’s release, you knew that he was a superstar in the making. That’s even been the case this gen. Ask PS5 owners if they knew that the system came with a free game installed on the Ssd—the brilliant Astro’s Playroom—and if they actually played it. The yeses are going to be fewer than they should be.

Still, better late than never. As great as Astro’s Playroom was, it’s a mere tech demo compared to what Team Asobi have accomplished with Astro Bot. Here we have...

We Need More Aaa Experiences Like Astro Bot and Less Like Call of Duty
Image
Now don’t get me wrong, I love experiences like Call of Duty and Battlefield, but Astro Bot is simply too beautiful to ignore. Now especially, since the popular military shooters have lost their creativity while moving like those rotting carcasses in Zombies modes.

I have been playing these military shooters since 2003. This is what gives me the feeling that the good old days are lost somewhere in an effort to churn out content to give more juice to those microtransactions. And this is why we need experiences like Astro Bot.

More Astro, Less Duty Please!

It feels like Sony is trying to show us the beauty of PlayStation 5 via the gameplay of Astro Bot. And without entering any argument, I have fallen for it; I want to stay there. The first time our character enters the Sky Garden in Astro Bot, it does exactly what video games are supposed...
