The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences (NATAS) on Thursday revealed the nominations for the third annual Children’s and Family Emmy Awards, which will take place in Los Angeles on March 15.

According to NATAS, the “standalone competition spotlights the pinnacle of creativity and innovation in children’s entertainment.”

Additionally, two winners and an honorable mention in the juried category, Pubic Service Initiative, were announced on Thursday. Winners in the juried individual achievement in animation categories will be announced early next year, as will the lifetime achievement nominee and ceremony host.

The Tiger's Apprentice from Paramount+ showcases a few overlapping story arcs. It focuses mostly on young Tom Lee, as he harnesses his mystical side. Little did he know, he was meant to be a Guardian like his passionate grandmother, Mrs. Lee, in San Francisco.

Their job is to protect the Phoenix gem from the sinister Loo (played by Michelle Yeoh). This sorceress wants the relic to remake reality, creating a powerful journey of self-discovery for the teenager. However, as the animals of the Chinese Zodiac join Tom to save the planet, The Tiger's Apprentice carves out a rich tapestry, subverting Chinese culture for modern audiences. In the process, the plot does get a tad convoluted, leaving a few mysteries and plot holes hanging.

A few surprises elevate a rote script that struggles to differentiate a generic protagonist. We've seen this type of character before countless times and frankly done better. That said, the supporting ensemble of shapeshifting critters, an umbrella-toting villain, and slick action scenes add just enough fire to fuel this CGI adventure for children.

Just like with almost every other 2024 film, I didn’t know much about The Tiger’s Apprentice. In fact, besides the fact that it had a tiger, I really didn’t know anything else about it. Therefore, I was surprised to see a cast boasting the likes of Henry Golding (The Gentlemen), Lucy Liu (Shazam! Fury of the Gods), Sandra Oh (Quiz Lady), and Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once), as well as talented screenwriters like David Magee (The Little Mermaid) and Christopher Yost (Thor: Ragnarok). Director Raman Hui (Monster Hunt) was the ‘wildcard’ I was unfamiliar with, so overall, I held no expectations whatsoever.

There are animations that speak to audiences of all ages and there are those that are simply meant to engage younger audiences for an hour and a half. The Tiger’s Apprentice is the latter. The film’s pacing is swift, leaving the story unfolding too fast to allow characters to breathe before we’re thrown into the next big action sequence. The story is generic, and it’s definitely not memorable. There’s a lack of warmth and heart to the character dynamics, and its overarching story is sometimes doing too much without slowing down to give attention to its worldbuilding and development.

Last week's news never sleeps. HBO has announced the premiere date for the 11th season of its award-winning current events show “Last Week Tonight With John Oliver,” which will premiere on Sunday, Feb. 18.

The half-hour satirical, insightful, and meticulously researched series takes a microscopic look at current political, social, economic, and cultural issues in the United States, as well as lesser-reported topics. Since its premiere in 2014, the weekly series has received 28 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Scripted Variety Series and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series at the just-past 75th Primetime Emmys.

He comes to the role of Globes host after breaking sales records on his “Funny Is Funny World Tour,” which came in as one of the highest grossing of the year according to Pollstar, at a gross of $29.4 million for 88 performances in arenas and theaters around the world.

While the Golden Globes are almost always hosted by comedians these days, the introduction of Koy to the stage is particularly appropriate in a year that’s seen the ceremony introduce a category recognizing Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television, alongside one for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement.
