‘Vaxxed’: Andrew Wakefield’s Controversial Anti-Vaccine Documentary Set for Secret Cannes Screening
Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe (2016)
Over a year after being programmed — and ultimately pulled — from the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival, Andrew Wakefield’s controversial anti-vacciation documentary, “Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe,” has resurfaced at another prestigious film festival.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film is set for a “secret” screening during this month’s Cannes Film Festival, where sales company and distributor Cinema Libre will screen it on May 25. Cinema Libre has secured distribution deals for the film in various foreign countries, but is bringing the doc to the Cannes market in hopes of selling it to further international territories.

‘Nuts!’ Director Penny Lane on Medical Quackery and Documentary Ethics
Penny Lane‘s Nuts!, following the life and chronicles of quack doctor, politician, and radio broadcaster John Romulus Brinkley — who skirted the FCC, medical establishment and international law as he was run out of Kansas — was one of many highlights this year at the Sundance Film Festival. Hilarious, yet strangely sympathetic, the film’s story is so absurd, Lane (known best for her intimate look at happier days in a troubled presidency, Our Nixon) deploys animated reenactments alongside archival materials creating a character study that both plays into Brinkley’s spin machine while pushing against it.

We spoke with director about the evolution of the film, an eight-year process kickstarted by stumbling across the story in a public library, leading to the film’s theatrical release right in the middle of a heated presidential election year. Check out the conversation below, along with an exclusive clip from the film.

Congratulations on the film.

Controversial 'Vaxxed' doc grosses $28K in Us debut
Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe (2016)
Distributor Cinema Libre has hailed a successful opening weekend for the documentary that lost its Tribeca world premiere berth following an outcry over the veracity of its scientific claims.

Vaxxed: From Cover-Up To Catastrophe by Andrew Wakefield, which among other things discusses a causal link between the Mmr vaccine and autism and an alleged cover-up by a Us medical organisation, grossed $28,339 over three days at New York’s Angelika Film Center.

Tribeca Film Festival top brass pulled the film from the line-up last week when co-founder Robert De Niro, who has a child with autism, consulted colleagues and members of the scientific community and determined the film did not adequately contribute to the ongoing discussion about autism.

In an open letter to Filmmaker magazine, director Penny Lane called Wakefield a “discredited and dangerous anti-vaccination quack.”

Wakefield, who published research into an alleged link between the vaccine and autism, lost his license in the UK and a number...

Tribeca Film Festival drops 'Vaxxed' from schedule
Robert De Niro at an event for A Single Man (2009)
Festival co-founder Robert De Niro on Saturday pulled Andrew Wakefield’s documentary Vaxxed: From Cover-Up To Catastrophe amid a backlash over the veracity of its claims.

De Niro took the decision one day after defending the inclusion of the film, which maintains there is a causal link between the Mmr vaccine and incidence of autism.

Scientists and other film-makers have taken issue with that claim. In an open latter in Filmmaker last week, Penny Lane described Wakefield as a “discredited and dangerous anti-vaccination quack.”

A medical paper by Wakefield published in 1998 that claimed to trace a connection between the Mmr vaccine and autism was later retracted by the publication in which it ran.

“My intent in screening this film was to provide an opportunity for conversation around an issue that is deeply personal to me and my family,” said De Niro, who is the father to a child with autism.

“But after reviewing...

Vaxxed axed from Tribeca by Amber Wilkinson - 2016-03-26 23:26:35
Vaxxed: From Cover-Up To Catastrophe has now been pulled from the Tribeca line-up Photo: Courtesy of Tribeca Film Festival The Tribeca Film Festival has announced it has removed controversial anti-vaccination documentary directed by struck-off former doctor Andrew Wakefield from its line-up.

Festival co-founder Robert De Niro, who had previously backed the decision to screen Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe, issued a second statement outlining the reasons for the decision.

He said: “My intent in screening this film was to provide an opportunity for conversation around an issue that is deeply personal to me and my family. But after reviewing it over the past few days with the Tribeca Film Festival team and others from the scientific community, we do not believe it contributes to or furthers the discussion I had hoped for.

"The Festival doesn't seek to avoid or shy away from controversy. However, we have concerns with certain things...

De Niro defends screening of anti-vaccination documentary at Tribeca by Amber Wilkinson - 2016-03-26 11:49:59
Vaxxed: From Cover-Up To Catastrophe has now been pulled from the Tribeca line-up Photo: Courtesy of Tribeca Film Festival Tribeca Film Festival co-founder Robert De Niro has defended the decision by the annual New York event to screen a controversial anti-vaccination documentary directed by discredited British gastroenterologist Andrew Wakefield.

Vaxxed: From Cover-Up to Catastrophe is also co-written by Wakefield, who became infamous in Britain after his 1998 study claiming a link between the combined measles-mumps-rubella vaccine and autism - which resulted in a health scare - was later found by the General Medical Council to have violated ethical standards. The British Medical Journal found aspects of the research "fraudulent", the study was retracted by The Lancet and Wakefield was subsequently struck off the medical register.

The NHS website says: "Andrew Wakefield's work has been completely discredited and he has been struck off as a doctor in the UK. Subsequent studies...

Robert De Niro Defends “Personal” Decision To Screen Anti-Vaccination Docu At Tribeca Film Fest As Protests Mount
Robert De Niro at an event for A Single Man (2009)
Tribeca Film Festival co-founder Robert De Niro today took direct responsibility for the fest’s world-premiere screening of Vaxxed: From Cover-Up To Catastrophe, a documentary about a purported link between the Mmr (measles/mumps/rubella) vaccine and an uptick in autism. That claim has been widely discredited in the medical community. The controversy has provoked angry confrontations between those convinced of a conspiracy to cover-up the “truth” about the vaccine’s…...
