The title of each episode in the first season is a quote from the 1847 novel 'Jane Eyre' by Charlotte Brontë. The titles of episodes in the second season are taken from quotes in the 1871 novel "Middlemarch" by George Eliot. Similarly, the title of each third-season episode is a quote from Mary Shelley's 1818 novel "Frankenstein".
The show was canceled after Season 3 because of the split between Netflix and CBC, despite its success and strong ratings. Fans started a Twitter campaign to persuade Netflix to renew it, using the hashtag #RenewAnnewithanE, which was used over one million times since the cancellation. Producers attempted to develop a fourth season with another network or create a movie to wrap up the story, but sadly, they were unable to do so.
Canadian fans criticized the US promotional poster, which displayed a retouched version of Amybeth McNulty. The image featured brighter eyes and teeth, fewer freckles, slightly altered hair, and the removal of shadows under her eyes. Photographer Caitlin Cronenberg, who captured the original portrait, expressed her surprise on Facebook, stating, "As the person who took this photo, I'm pretty surprised to see this. Completely unnecessary to do anything to the spectacular and captivating Amybeth."
The phrases carved into branches in the opening credits are: "A perfect graveyard of buried hopes," "Will you swear to be my friend forever and ever?" "Big ideas you need big words to express." "To sleep in a tree in the moonshine." "Anne with an 'E'". All of these phrases are quotes from L.M. Montgomery's "Anne of Green Gables".
Executive producer Miranda de Pencier played Josie Pye in the 1985 miniseries Anne of Green Gables (1985) and its sequels.
