I happened to stumble upon the 2013 movie "Night of the Living Dead Reboot" by random chance here in 2023. Needless to say that I didn't even know that this movie existed. But with it being a zombie movie, of course I had to sit down and watch it.
And needless to say that given the movie's title, I was somewhat already thinking 'no' before even watching it, because George A. Romero's classic is something that really didn't need to be rebooted or reinvented, especially when it has been done so several times and failed miserably, well aside from the 1990 remake from director Tom Savini which was actually quite good. So the cards were stacked in disfavor of this 2013 reboot, I have to admit that. But I still opted to give the movie a chance.
Writer and director Lewis Guthrie delivered a fair enough attempt at reconstructing the classic Romero movie. However, the movie was pretty low-key and amateurish, and there was no denying that. But for an endeavor of its kinds, it was actually a fair enough result, if you enjoy low budget movies.
It should be noted that of course I wasn't familiar with a single actor or actress in the movie. But the acting performances were, for the majority, actually fair enough. Sure, you're not in for Award-winning performances here, but some of the actors and actresses on the screen did manage to put on performances adequate enough to carry the movie.
The zombie effects and make-up were low-key, but it wasn't among the worst of zombie make-up that I've seen in movies. So that certainly spoke in favor of the movie.
I have to say that I was sitting with a 'this is a very unnecessary reboot' throughout the course of the 62 minutes that the movie ran for.
My rating of writer and director Lewis Guthrie's 2013 movie "Night of the Living Dead Reboot" lands on a four out of ten stars.
