The year 1600, the decisive moment in the Battle of Sekigahara. After the strategic retreat, Toyohisa Shimazu, a commander of the Shimazu clan in Satsuma, flees alone into the mountains, eventually finding himself in a corridor with countless doors. There he encounters a mysterious man named Murasaki, but before Toyohisa can ask him a question, he is sent to the other side of a stone door. The commander enters places, an alternative world in which so-called demon people live alongside humans. Together with Nobunaga Oda, Yoichi Nasu and other heroes who have come to this world from different times, Toyohisa plunges into the battles of another universe as a samurai.
"Drifters" has aroused my interest with its "Hellsing-like animation" and, like "Hellsing", manages to tell an entertaining story, if not exactly deep, with this animation.
The coming together of fighters from different eras is a brilliant idea and the soundtrack just doesn't let you skip the intro.
I really wish the anime got a second season.

A group of people from different era's in time, each own a great skill and are sent to a strange foreign land where there's demons, elves, dwarfs etc and they fight a battle for the greater good. Overall I can't fault this series, it has a great story, great characters and is also just worth watching just for the animation, action scenes and gore.
Also there's subtitled and dubbed versions of it
By the time I finished watching Drifters, I was not only impressed by the overall content, but also for its ability to entertain. If you have a sense of humor, then this will definitely be worth every minute of time. If you take it too seriously, though, then Drifters will probably feel more like a chore to watch. I would absolutely recommend Drifters even if you're not a fan of the author's works. I can't say this enough, but Hirano's ability to express his ideas are just too damn entertaining to evade.
Great anime with strategic action and historical figures as the antagonists/protagonists
I loved the plot and the animation itself is great, got lots of violence and humor too. It's the terrible storytelling and characters along with the dub and sub which spoiled the experience.
The setting is a medieval fantasy world with elves, dwarves, orcs, humans, and dragons. There is a war going on between the humans and the rest of the species. The twist is famous personalities with military background from earth are transferred there after their death, these guys are called Drifters. It's interesting to see how these famous people change the world around them with life-giving them a second chance. Facing them are Ends, these again seem to be famous personalities but ones who died a painful death. The ends also have mystical powers to supplement their personality.
My complaint with the anime is the focus on Japanese personality which the people outside Japan won't know about. The ones known the world over like Hannibal and Joan of Arc are given weird personalities. I would have loved it if they would have pitted a Hannibal vs Rommel. These unknown famous guys from Japan just don't hold the interest for me.
The Eng dub for the anime was missing for most of the episodes so I had to shift to sub, even that use to skip out on 2-3 minutes of gag scenes.
