Saving Jaws

For a so-called documentary, it was disappointing to see them refer to Hong Kong as China. If you're going to try to assess how prevalent the practice of shark finning is by talking to people, which is a totally subjective and scientifically unsound practice, then maybe you should go to ACTUAL CHINA to do that. SMH. White people are so ignorant of other cultures it's ridiculous.

Anything that's helps try and change public perception on sharks or to stop shark fin soup is a worthwhile venture.

This show was both truly inspiring and deeply depressing. It shines a light on our generation's equivalent of the last generation's horrific whaling practices, and should be required viewing in schools throughout the world. The longer it takes societies to quit doing absurdly stupid things and wasting egregious amounts of natural resources, the more detrimental it's going to be for every generation after us. Killing sharks for their fins is equivalent to killing an elephant for its tusks or killing a tiger for its tail... It's just horrifying. It's also encouraging to know that at least a few people are committing their lives to educating the ignorant and trying to invoke change.

I wish a program like this would air on shark week. I have watched dozens of programs on sharks and had no idea how bad the shark fin industry was in the world. The interactions and beauty of sharks was well captured as well.

If you enjoy Shark Week, shark docs, shark films and other shark related material, it's a must watch. The message of protecting sharks for the sake of the species as well as for their vital role in maintaining the oceanic ecosystem is admirable, and the filmmakers do a great job of arguing their point. Are sharks scary? Absolutely. Are they vital? Also, absolutely. This film contains some of the most beautiful locations in the world, with some of the most incredible shots of shark/human interaction you will ever see. Ocean dances in the sea with a beautiful grace that may actually convince you the woman is part mermaid. The film may lack the action you're accustomed to in shark films, but it also lacks the constant repetition of scientist interviews and the usual "I don't know what we'll encounter" interviews that usually cause most people to use the bathroom or get a snack and replaces them with intelligent narration, smooth, talented, and charismatic swimming and interaction with nature in it's natural habitat, and some of the most stunning, brilliant, beautiful shots of the open ocean and it's alpha predator that you've ever seen. Definitely worth a peek. Check it out.
