Believing that a serial killer is at the heart of the show would miss the finer aspects of this deep, complicated, Spanish Noir series It manages to keep a slew of stories aloft while throwing in teaser tidbits for distraction. There are no heroes here, mostly imperfect humans with varying degrees of appeal or revulsion. Almost every major character, and there are many, is explored enough to let us almost know them but to leave us questioning still. The title,I assume, is a metaphor for how we show ourselves to the outer world by day and how we trot out our demons by night. The killer is the least interesting of them all. Psychopaths can be so dull in real life. Lack of guilt and lack of remorse are traits of inhumanity. Lust, desire, loneliness, grief, ambition, guilt, and remorse, are part and parcel of us.
I thoroughly enjoyed this excellent series thanks to " Walter Presents" on the UK's Channel 4 and its iplayer "All 4". Agree with the other 2 reviews but a warning to older viewers and those whose memory is not the best. There is so much going on and so many characters that I wouldn't leave it too long before you watch the next episode. Similar in suspense, acting quality and production values as the excellent "I know who you are" a previous Spanish series.
This Catalan offering is packed with characters, each having to deal with their own demons and life's foibles. It starts off as an interesting Noir type thriller, but as the series progresses takes on the feel of a Spanish Telenovela. It seems as if every character that's introduced has some flaw or story attached to them. As the story progresses, so do the number of characters and subplots, to the point where so much stuff becomes distracting and tiresome. It's as if one might need a complex algorithm or software program to remind the viewer whose who! Some of the acting is good, at other times, really bad. As is common to a lot of the Spanish produced series, there is a lot of sex that covers the spectrum from deviant to standard! I guess the message here is that everyone has many sides to their character, and these can be as different as night is from day. If the show is not analyzed too deeply, and watched only for mindless entertainment, taking the events in stride as they happen, it'll pass muster as an average series to watch!
This is the best TV show I have watched this week. Has a sort of French feel about it what with all the broody and faulted characters. No rose ending for some but plenty of closure for others. Super performances all round. Well worth your time, see Spain isnt all the inquisition!
Loved watching both series, depth of characters was fantastic and storyline brilliant. Would love morr of the same from the writer's who wrote this.
