Milla 22: el escape

A Disastrous Liam Neeson Sci-Fi Flop Was Almost Canceled
Image
Peter Berg's 2012 would-be blockbuster "Battleship" was doomed from the start. The film was based on the popular Hasbro board game of the same name, wherein players attempt to guess the coordinates of their opponent's battleships on a hidden grid. The game boasted no characters or plot beyond that, however, making a feature film adaptation seem foolish by design; it's not so different from the idea of making a "Kool-Aid" movie, as seen in the satirical TV series "The Studio."

And it turned out to be just as disastrous as it sounded. "Battleship" was a massively expensive affair, sporting a budget of (by some reports) up to $220 million. Despite this, it was terribly unpopular, grossing $65.2 million domestically and $313.5 million overall. It was also reviewed very poorly and currently boasts a decidedly "Rotten" score from hundreds of critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The film's premise is thin, and its characters are uninteresting.

Mark Wahlberg’s $66 Million Spy Thriller Sneaks Into Free Streaming Charts Despite 23% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Mark Wahlberg released one of the first movies of 2025 with Flight Risk, but another of his action vehicles that’s now seven years old has resurfaced on streaming charts. Wahlberg stars alongside The Walking Dead veteran Lauren Cohan in Mile 22, the spy thriller following a small team of American intelligence officers who try to smuggle a police officer with sensitive information out of Indonesia. The film is currently streaming for free on Tubi, and it’s one of the most popular movies on the platform at the time of writing, sitting at #9 on the streamer’s charts. Mile 22 earned “rotten” scores of 23% from critics and 44% from audiences on the aggregate site Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed $66 million at the global box office against a $50 million budget.

Graham Roland and Lea Carpenter wrote the script for Mile 22, and Peter Berg directed the film. Roland is also known for his...

Who Plays Maggie Greene On The Walking Dead?
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

"The Walking Dead" may not have kept up with its highest of highs, but it's still, by many measures, one of the most successful cable TV shows of the 2010s. Based on Robert Kirkman's Image Comics series of the same name, the zombie series focused on Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), who awakens from a coma into an apocalypse populated by the undead. While Rick was the central character for much of the show's run, he was far from the only character contending with the reanimated corpses of the deceased.

Maggie Greene was one of those characters. First introduced in "The Walking Dead" season 2, Maggie went on to become one of the most important figures in the franchise. Not only did she appear in more than 140 episodes of the main series, but she also headlined the spin-off "The Walking Dead: Dead City" alongside Negan.

Paul Bettany's Religious Horror Movie Is Making A Mark On Tubi's Charts
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

15 years after it became a modest hit in theaters, "Legion" is finding new life on streaming. Not to be confused with the FX TV series of the same name, based in the world of Marvel Comics, we're talking about the movie starring Paul Bettany, known best for his work as Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But before he became the Vision, he was an actor with an interesting resume, including big hits like "A Beautiful Mind" and "The Da Vinci Code." Yet, for whatever reason, this movie is gaining traction right now.

As of this writing, director Scott Stewart's 2010 religious action/horror flick "Legion" is sitting at number seven on Tubi's most-watched movie charts, per FlixPatrol. It's just ahead of Mark Wahlberg's action flick "Mile 22" and just below the Tubi Original "Rhythm and Blood." Tyler Perry...

Liam Neeson’s 34% Rotten Tomatoes Sci-Fi Thriller Lands in Top 10 Days Before It Leaves Streaming
Image
It’s been a quiet year for Liam Neeson so far, but more than 10 years ago, he starred in an alien invasion film that’s climbing streaming charts. Neeson features alongside Alexander Skarsgård (Murderbot) and Taylor Kitsch (Friday Night Lights) in Battleship, the 2012 sci-fi thriller following a fleet of ships forced to battle an unknown enemy to stop them from destroying the planet. Battleship has been streaming on Prime Video for a while now, and although the film is due to exit the platform in 11 days, it has landed in the top 10, sitting at #6 at the time of writing. The film earned a “rotten” 35% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience-driven Popcornmeter also landed a poor 54%. It grossed $303 million at the box office on a $209 million budget.

Jon and Erich Hoeber wrote the script for Battleship, and Peter Berg stepped behind the camera to direct the film. The Hoeber...

‘Flight Risk’ Lifts Lionsgate To Second No. 1 Opening Of 2025 With $12M+ – Sunday Box Office Update
Image
Sunday Am Writethru: It’s bound to be one of the lowest overall grossing weekends of 2025 with around $70.2M for all movies, and there’s not even a snowstorm to blame.

That’s how this part of the calendar typically swings at the box office. A year ago at this time, all titles counted $54.5M per Box Office Mojo, and that was the second worst weekend of 2024. For all the blah-blah from distribution heads that moviegoing can be a 52 weekend business, there are just some dead zones on the calendar. Today, it’s a run-up to the Super Bowl with Commanders vs. Eagles and Bills vs. Chiefs, so don’t expect any guys to go to the movies. Hopefully this weekend doesn’t come in lower than what we are seeing here.

Still, where others see pitfalls, Lionsgate sees opportunity, so good on them once again for programming a wide...

Mark Wahlberg’s Rotten Action Thriller 'Mile 22' Finds Success on Streaming
Image
Mark Wahlberg’s panned action thriller from 2018 is currently finding new life on streaming. Mile 22, which sees Wahlberg reunite with Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and Patriots Day director Peter Berg, has now found its way into the top 10 on Starz, with audiences turning to this no-nonsense tale of Marky Mark and his leadership of an elite, top secret CIA unit.

Starring Mark Wahlberg, Iko Uwais, John Malkovich, Lauren Cohan, and Ronda Rousey, Mile 22 was met with largely negative reviews upon release. The action outing stands at just 23% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with audiences slightly more enamored and scoring the movie 44% on the Popcornmeter. “Mile 22 lets the bullets fly -- and not much else -- in a thrill-deficient action thriller whose title proves sadly fitting for a film that feels close to a marathon endurance test,” the critics’ consensus reads. Boogie Nights Cast: Every Actor & Adult Film Industry Cameo
Image
Boogie Nights takes place in the world of adult entertainment. Paul Thomas Anderson's 1997 classic stars Mark Wahlberg as Dirk Diggler, a California native who became a well-known adult film actor in the San Fernando Valley during the '70s. Recognizable actors portray most characters, but several real-life adult film stars make cameos in small roles. Before Boogie Nights, Mark Wahlberg had already established an impressive resume in the entertainment industry, but this movie made him a star.

Boogie Nights transformed Wahlberg into a mainstream movie star, thanks in large part to his tragicomic lead performance and a climactic scene that literally exposes the film's lead character, Dirk Diggler. However, what many P.T. Anderson fans remember is that this film is full of character actors who would go on to appear in several of the director's movies over the next two decades, some in lead roles and others always working as brilliant supporting actors.

‘Lanterns’: HBO’s DC Studios Series Casts Poorna Jagannathan
Image
Poorna Jagannathan has been cast in a recurring role in the upcoming HBO series “Lanterns,” Variety has confirmed.

The show is based on DC’s “Green Lantern” comics. Jagannathan joins previously announced series leads Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre in the series, as well as cast members Kelly Macdonald and Garret Dillahunt.

Per the official logline, the show follows “new recruit John Stewart (Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

Jagannathan will play Zoe, who is described as “effortlessly confident and poised in any setting, even those where she stands out. She is every bit as composed and cunning of the influential men around her.”

Jagannathan previously starred in the HBO limited series “The Night Of” in the role of Safar Khan. In TV, she is also known for her role in...

Gary Dauberman’s Initial ‘Salem’s Lot’ Cut Was 3 Hours Long and Included Marsten House Opening
Image
The long-awaited movie adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot from director Gary Dauberman (Annabelle Comes Home) is now available to stream on Max, unleashing a stylish vampire outbreak without much in the way of story. It turns out that there was a much longer cut of the film that Dauberman ultimately trimmed down for a leaner runtime.

The filmmaker revealed in a recent interview with Den of Geek, “My first cut was about three hours. There’s a lot left out. My first draft of the script is 180-odd pages or something because you’re trying to include everything. And a lot of it has to do with a lot of the secondary characters and stuff that I spoke about. So it was sad to see that stuff go, but it’s like a necessary evil.”

One of the key scenes trimmed? Ben Mears’ chilling encounter with Depression-era hitman...

Ronda Rousey Apologizes for Sharing Sandy Hook Shooting Conspiracy Video 11 Years Ago: ‘I Was Ignorant’ and ‘Deserve to Be Hated and Detested’
Image
Former UFC fighter and actor Ronda Rousey issued an apology on social media for an incident that took place 11 years ago in which she shared a conspiracy theory video about the Sandy Hook shooting. While Rousey deleted the video post at the time and told her followers that “she never meant to insult or hurt anyone,” she now published a lengthy apology statement on social media in which she admitted that she deserved to be hated and “should’ve been canceled.”

“I can’t say how many times I’ve redrafted this apology over the last 11 years,” Rousey wrote. “How many times I’ve convinced myself it wasn’t the right time or that I’d be causing even more damage by giving it. But 11 years ago I made the single most regrettable decision of my life. I watched a Sandy Hook conspiracy video and reposted it on Twitter. I didn’t even believe it,...

Mark Wahlberg's New Movie Looks Fun, But I Have Serious Doubts Over It Breaking His Rotten Tomatoes Streak
Image
Mark Wahlberg's latest action-comedy, The Union, features him as a construction worker turned reluctant spy alongside Halle Berry. Out of the star's last 11 movies, only two were certified "Fresh" on Rotten Tomatoes. While The Union may not break Mark Wahlberg's recent Rotten Tomatoes streak, it's shaping up to be Wahlberg's best action movie in some time.

I'm weirdly excited for Mark Wahlberg's next action comedy, but I doubt it's going to help his current Rotten Tomato streak. Wahlberg has had a varied acting career, which includes acclaimed dramas like Boogie Nights or The Departed, but audiences still know him best for his action output. Mark Wahlberg action movies are (usually) a fun time, with some of his best offerings including Shooter, Four Brothers and 2 Guns with Denzel Washington. In recent years, I've noticed an interesting trend in his career though.

Following the failed franchise starter of Mile 22...

Mark Wahlberg's New Villain Movie Should Set Up Joining $487M Action Franchise To Pay Off A Career Trend
Image
Mark Wahlberg will play a negative role in Mel Gibson's upcoming thriller Flight Risk. Wahlberg and Gibson's Flight Risk collaboration could get the former a part in Lethal Weapon 5. Owing to Wahlberg's history of working in buddy cop action comedies, he would be perfect for Lethal Weapon 5.

Mark Wahlberg's negative role in an upcoming thriller should set up his involvement in a $487 million franchise that would finally pay off his biggest career trend. Since his 1994 debut with Renaissance Man, Mark Wahlberg has come a long way as an actor and now has a resume that includes myriad films. The actor may be better known for doing comedy and action, but has even proven his acting forte in several serious films like Lone Survivor, Mile 22, and Patriots Day.

However, despite being in the acting business for over two decades, Mark Wahlberg has rarely taken on antagonistic roles.

An Upcoming Mark Wahlberg Thriller Could Launch The Franchise Jason Statham Failed To 11 Years Ago
Image
The upcoming Play Dirty will star Mark Wahlberg as anti-hero thief Parker, setting up a potential Parker movie franchise. Previous adaptations of Donald E. Westlake's Parker novels struggled, with Statham's 2013 Parker film failing to launch a franchise. Director Shane Black is leading the potential Parker movie franchise, promising a fresh take on the iconic character.

A new Mark Wahlberg thriller could launch the Parker franchise that Jason Statham failed to kick off in 2013. Wahlberg used to star in a fairly reliable output of R-rated action movies and thrillers, but in recent years, he's dialed back and focused on dramas and comedies like Father Stu or The Family Plan. This has been a welcome change of pace for the star because while his action output was fun, by the time he starred in movies like Mile 22, they began to feel a tad samey.

Wahlberg is set to find his...

Mile 22 Sequel: Updates, Story Details, Will It Happen?
Image
A Mile 22 sequel has been in the works for multiple years, but it still hasn't moved forward yet. Peter Berg's 94-minute spy thriller was released in the summer of 2018 and was heavily criticized. The director previously collaborated with Mark Wahlberg for several hit films; however, the negative reviews for Mile 22 suggested the duo missed the mark and didn't create enough buzz to warrant a sequel. Mile 22 follows an elite CIA squad led by James Silva (Wahlberg) escorting an asset on a 22-mile journey. Needless to say, things don't go as planned with Silva and his team facing dangerous enemies every step of the way.

Director Pete Berg and Wahlberg previously collaborated a number of times, most recently with Spenser: Confidential, based on the Richard B. Parker Spenser For Hire book series. Their previous relatively low-budget productions such as Lone Survivor and Patriots Day earned solid reviews and box-office results,...

Mel Gibson to Direct Mark Wahlberg in Lionsgate’s Actioner ‘Flight Risk’
Mark Wahlberg
Lionsgate has nabbed global distribution for “Flight Risk,” an action-thriller starring Mark Wahlberg and directed by Mel Gibson. This will mark the first film Gibson has directed since his blockbuster ($175 million on a $40 million budget) and Oscar-nominated “Hacksaw Ridge” in 2016. The mini-major will be launching the project, featuring Wahlberg as a pilot transporting a dangerous criminal for trial, at Cannes.

“We love the undeniable electric pairing of Mel Gibson and Mark Wahlberg,” Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Joe Drake said. “These world-class talents combining for this dynamic, character-driven film will make ‘Flight Risk’ one of the most suspense-filled, must-see events of the year.”

Wahlberg and Gibson have starred in a few projects together, including “Daddy’s Home 2” and last year’s faith-based “Father Stu.” Considering the number of high-concept or true-story action movies Wahlberg has made with director Peter Berg over the last decade, it is a mild surprise that Gibson will be in charge.

Why Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg Should Go Back to Biopics
Image
Peter Berg has had an interesting career trajectory, and has earned his reputation as a filmmaker unafraid to tackle nearly every genre. While Berg has certainly not had a perfect track record, his greatest achievements suggest that he’s on the verge of creating a truly sensational project if handed the right material. Berg began his career primarily working in action films, including Dwayne Johnson’s star-making adventure film The Rundown and the military thriller The Kingdom. After the highly negative reaction that his science fiction film Battleship received, Berg took a break from crowd pleasers to initiate a new partnership with Mark Wahlberg.

Wahlberg was in a similar place as an actor; he seemed to be interested in everything from prestigious arthouse projects to generic studio comedies. However, the duo successfully worked together on the films Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and Patriots Day, each of which analyzed a recent...

Netflix has ordered a six-episode limited series titled “American Primeval” with Taylor Kitsch set to star, Variety has learned.

25 brilliant movies that were box office bombs, from Babylon to Fight Club
Niños del hombre (2006)
Predicting which movies will set the box office alight seems like an easy task, but there’s a reason studios get paid the big bucks to do so.

However, every so often, an acclaimed film can come along that absolutely tanks after being unveiled for the public.

Over the years, there have been a startling number of films that have struggled, or indeed failed, to recoup their budget, and have consequently earned the “box office flop” label.

It’s hard to pin down exactly why movies such as these – Children of Men and It’s a Wonderful Life, to name a few – initially struggle to find an audience. Fortunatrely, though, the film’s quality shines through and it ultimately finds a fanbase beyond its theatrical release.

Thanks to the advent of streaming services, reliance on box office figures has diminished somewhat over the years. This also means that films which struggled...

Thanks to the advent of streaming services, reliance on box office figures has diminished somewhat over the years. This also means that films which struggled...

23 terrific films that were box office bombs, from Children of Men to It’s a Wonderful Life

Predicting which movies will set the box office alight seems like an easy task, but there’s a reason studios get paid the big bucks to do so.

However, every so often, an acclaimed film can come along that absolutely tanks after being unveiled for the public.

‘Salem’s Lot’ – Lewis Pullman Says the Remake is Very Faithful to Stephen King’s Novel
Reggie Nalder in La hora del vampiro (1979)
The new adaptation of Salem’s Lot from director Gary Dauberman is currently missing in action, originally set for release in September 2022 before more recently being bumped to April 2023. As we learned over the summer, the WB/New Line movie is now without a release date entirely, and we’re waiting to hear more on that.

In the meantime, star Lewis Pullman (The Strangers: Prey at Night) has offered up some thoughts on Salem’s Lot in a chat with ComicBook.com, teasing the faithfulness to Stephen King‘s novel. How faithful is the new adaptation? According to Pullman, quite faithful.

Pullman tells the site, “Gary Dauberman, the director, is really keen on doing justice to the book. But also, the previous adaptation was a two-parter, because it’s such a hefty book and there are so many different moving parts and so many characters. So there are some parts where Gary had...

The ‘Salem’s Lot’ Remake Is Once Again Without a Release Date
Nicholas Crovetti in El Misterio de Salem's Lot (2024)
In the midst of many big time changes over at Warner Bros., we’ve learned tonight that the Salem’s Lot remake from WB/New Line has been bumped from release yet again.

Originally set for theatrical release on September 9, 2022, the new Stephen King adaptation was recently bumped to April 21, 2023, and now the film has been undated altogether.

It’s likely that Warner Bros. is trying to figure out what to do with the movie, and whether to bring it to theaters or to streaming on HBO Max. We’ll report more as we learn it.

James Wan produced for Warner Bros. and New Line, with Gary Dauberman (It, The Nun, Annabelle Comes Home) writing the script and also directing the new movie.

Salem’s Lot 2023 is set “circa 1975 (when King’s book was first published).”

In Salem’s Lot 2023, “Haunted by an incident from his childhood, author Ben Mears returns...

Actor Mark Walhberg Aims To More Meaningful Content Like ‘Father Stu’ “I Feel Like This Is Starting A New Chapter For Me”
Image
Father Stu star Mark Wahlberg wants to be a part of more uplifting content.

While speaking with Entertainment Tonight, he spoke about his journey filming and how the inspirational message behind the film, is opening up a new door in his career and transitioning out of the Hollywood spotlight.

“I feel like this is starting a new chapter for me in that, now, doing things like this [with] real substance can help people. I definitely want to focus on making more. I wouldn’t say necessarily just faith-based content but things that will help people. Hopefully this movie will open a door for not only myself but for lots of other people in Hollywood to make more meaningful content.”

Maybe Wahlberg is looking to make films that are seen as inspirational (like Father Stu), opposed to his more violent action cinema like Infinite, and Mile 22, or escapist films like Uncharted.

Peter Berg’s Film 44 Sets First-Look Deal With Netflix
Image
Peter Berg’s Film 44 has set a new first-look deal with Netflix, under which Berg will produce and direct live-action films and series for the streamer.

The new deal follows the success of last year’s “Spenser Confidential,” which Berg produced and directed at Netflix. The action film, starring Mark Wahlberg and Winston Duke, was a massive hit, with Netflix reporting 85 million members watching the film in its first four weeks.

“For me, in this moment, Netflix is the perfect creative fit,” Berg said in a statement. “I could not be more excited to get to work!”

The filmmaker and his scripted entertainment banner Film 44 have produced films such as “Lone Survivor,” “Deepwater Horizon,” “Mile 22,” “The Rundown,” “Hancock” and “Friday Night Lights” (both the 2004 feature film and the Emmy-winning television adaptation). Berg also served as executive producer and director of HBO’s “The Leftovers” and “Ballers.” Berg has...

“For me, in this moment, Netflix is the perfect creative fit,” Berg said in a statement. “I could not be more excited to get to work!”

“Pete Berg has created iconic television. Authentic, visceral and kinetic, Berg’s style has elevated storytelling for years and we are proud to welcome him to Netflix,” Brian Wright, head of overall deals at Netflix, said.

A Forgotten Mark Wahlberg Movie Is Dominating Netflix Today
Image
Mark Wahlberg may be an Academy Award nominated actor and producer, former rapper, underrated comedian, restaurateur and regularly finds himself named as one of the highest-paid talents in Hollywood, but over the last two decades you’re a whole lot more likely to see him starring in a run of the mill action thriller than a prestige drama, comedy or family film.

The 49 year-old has built a decent career out of headlining mid-budget genre movies that do solid if unspectacular business at the box office and are the subjects of middling but hardly scathing reviews. If you were looking for one of Wahlberg’s efforts that saw him playing a character with a military or law enforcement background that wields a gun on the poster, there are hardly a shortage of options to choose from.

The Corruptor, Four Brothers, Shooter, Max Payne, Contraband, Broken City, 2 Guns, Patriots Day and...

An Underrated Mark Wahlberg Movie Hits Netflix This Week
Image
November will bring about a brand new month, and that means that we’re losing a bunch of content on Netflix and gaining some fresh stuff in return. You can rest easy knowing that you’re all set for a ton of great new movies and shows throughout the coming weeks, and the 1st, in particular, will be adding quite a collection, including heavy hitters like the ensemble heist flick Ocean’s Eleven, Jim Carrey comedy Yes Man, children’s classic The Indian in the Cupboard and the Keanu Reeves thriller Knock Knock.

And although all of those films – and plenty others set to arrive on the 1st – are worth adding to your list right away, there’s an underrated action pic that you might want to check out, too. Of course, that goes double if you’re a fan of Mark Wahlberg.

Mile 22 is available to dive into beginning November...

Netflix Is Adding Over 40 New Movies/TV Shows This Week
Image
Netflix is adding a ton of great titles over the next seven days. From Monday to Sunday, the streaming giant is unleashing some new Halloween-related originals for you to dig into as we approach October 31st, while it’s an usually busy weekend for the site, too, as Sunday marks November 1st, meaning a load of newly licensed movies and shows are being added to Netflix’s library.

Unfortunately, they aren’t bringing us anything fresh on Monday or Thursday, but the rest of the week is well-stocked. As you can see below, Tuesday the 27th delivers three new originals. The highlight of that day’s haul, though, has to be Blood of Zeus, the much-anticipated anime-style series that’s adapting classic Greek myths. Jason O’Mara, Jessica Henwick and Claudia Christian star.

For more, here’s the full list of what’s hitting the service this week:

An Underrated Mark Wahlberg Movie Is Dominating Netflix Today
Image
Mark Wahlberg is never going to be considered one of the most acclaimed dramatic actors in the industry, but when he shows up in more serious fare, he’s usually much better than when we see him in the run-of-the-mill action movies that seem to be his bread and butter.

For instance, Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon and Patriots Day are far superior to generic output like Mile 22 and Spenser Confidential. Make no mistake about it, Wahlberg is certainly able to command the screen if he’s given the right material, but he doesn’t always pick the best projects.

One of his more underrated films, though, is 2018’s Instant Family, which did decent business at the box office after earning $120 million worldwide off a $48 million budget, but certainly isn’t remembered by too many people these days when it comes to listing highlights of his career. And that’s a shame,...

Mark Wahlberg Has Reportedly Had Talks For McU Role
There are very much two completely different sides to the career of Mark Wahlberg, and they’ve combined hugely effectively to see him become one of the biggest and highest-paid movie stars in the industry over the last two decades. The 49 year-old is often accused of being a very limited actor, but with the right material in the right project, he’s dispelled those doubts on countless occasions.

One side of Wahlberg’s established screen persona is as the star of a series of mediocre and forgettable action thrillers that includes the likes of Shooter, Max Payne, Contraband, Mile 22, Spenser Confidential and the fourth and fifth installments of Michael Bay’s Transformers franchise. As a general rule, his mid-budget genre output tends to be mediocre at best.

On the other hand, there’s also a dedicated and committed talent, not to mention a hugely underrated comedian, that we’ve...

One Of Mark Wahlberg’s Best Films Hits Amazon Prime Next Month
Image
Mark Wahlberg is never going to be regarded as one of the most acclaimed dramatic actors in Hollywood, despite picking up an Academy Award nomination for The Departed, but his performances in more serious fare are usually much better than the ones he gives in the run-of-the-mill action movies he regularly appears in.

His frequent collaborations with director Peter Berg are a perfect example of this, with the duo’s true-life stories Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon and Patriots Day far superior to the generic and uninspired Mile 22 and Spenser Confidential. Wahlberg is more than capable of commanding the screen if he’s given the right material, but more often than not he reverts firmly to type as a one-dimensional hero in standard genre movies, although he does remain an underrated comedic talent.

Patriots Day arrives on Amazon next month, on September 1st, and it isn’t just the best...

How Russell Crowe’s ‘Unhinged’ Will Pave The Road To Reopening Cinemas After Covid-19 Shutdown
Image
Exclusive: Even if New York City theaters aren’t opening, and even if Warner Bros. decides to move Tenet to August, Solstice Studios’ Russell Crowe road-rage movie Unhinged still will open on July 1.

While Tenet is being pinned as the long-awaited launch of the summer season after exhibition’s great shutdown since mid-March, Unhinged is the warm-up act to get turnstiles primed as multiplexes and their staffs adjust to operating in an environment of reduced auditorium seating (25%-50%), face covers, and heightened cleaning with a greater space between showtimes.

Tracking hits tomorrow for the first theatrical release from the new studio from Mark Gill, Guy Botham and Vincent Bruzzese which opened its doors in October 2018 as Deadline first told you.

It will be interesting to see what projections that the B.O. stat agencies put forth for director Derrick Borte’s Unhinged, especially for a theatrical marketplace which is far...

Mark Wahlberg in Early Talks With Netflix for Spy Movie ‘Our Man in New Jersey’
Image
Mark Wahlberg is in early negotiations with streaming giant Netflix to produce and star in spy movie “Our Man in New Jersey.”

Should the deal be made, Wahlberg would portray a blue-collar 007 James Bond-type character. “Safe House” writer David Guggenheim is also in talks to develop the script. Stephen Levinson, who came up with the story idea, would produce with Wahlberg.

Wahlberg and Levinson worked with Netflix on the action-comedy “Spenser Confidential,” which began streaming on March 6 with Wahlberg in the title role and producing. Levinson also produced along with Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher and director Peter Berg.

Wahlberg’s most recent feature films include “Transformers: The Last Knight,” “Mile 22,” “Daddy’s Home 2” and “Instant Family.” He recently wrapped shooting the independent drama “Good Joe Bell,” directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green with Reid Miller, Connie Britton, Maxwell Jenkins and Gary Sinise also starring. Wahlberg received Oscar nominations for...

Fifth Time’s The Funny: Mark Wahlberg & Peter Berg Lighten Up With ‘Spenser’

Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg have a long history together, going back to 2013’s Lone Survivor. Mark Wahlberg and Winston Duke in Spenser Confidential (2020)
Spenser Confidential Movie review: Critics Review, Rating, Cast and Crew
Mark Wahlberg and Winston Duke in Spenser Confidential (2020)
There are films that sink under the urge to be too 'cool' with narrative structure, and "Spenser Confidential" is one of those. The effort is clearly to give an extra boost to a jaded, eighties-style cop action comedy. Yet, as the rather routine climax action sequence plays out at the end of a runtime of less than two hours, you are left wondering if this film was at all necessary in the first case.

Which would seem strange because "Spenser Confidential" marks the return of a viable Hollywood team. Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg are back together for the fifth time here, after collaborating on "Lone Survivor", "Deepwater Horizon", "Patriots Day", and "Mile 22".

Based on Ace Atkins' novel "Wonderland", the screenplay by Sean O'Keefe and Brian Helgeland casts Walhberg as Spenser, a disgraced former cop who was notorious for playing by his own rules. As the film opens,...

Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci in El irlandés (2019)
Spenser Confidential Review
Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, and Joe Pesci in El irlandés (2019)
There’s nothing confidential about the fact that for every movie as quality as The Irishman that Netflix releases, they drop about five as mediocre as Spenser Confidential. Based on the series of novels by Robert B. Parker, later adapted as a television show starring Robert Urich, Spenser Confidential is the kind of movie that you’d be livid spending money to see at the cinema, but you’ll shrug off and forget about five minutes after streaming it. Even Mark Wahlberg, who stars as the titular Spenser, seems bored with the film.

Set in Boston (because where else would a Mark Wahlberg vehicle be set?), Spenser Confidential centers on Spenser, a recently released convict and ex-police officer. Spenser was thrown in jail after assaulting the captain of his precinct, and on the day of Spenser’s release, that same captain is murdered. The murder is pinned on a young...

‘Spenser Confidential’ Review: Mark Wahlberg’s First Netflix Film Is a Dire Action-Comedy Only an Algorithm Could Love
Mark Wahlberg
A far cry from the previous four movies that Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg have made together (the two men Voltron-ing into a single creative entity that will henceforth be referred to as “WahlBerg”), the hilariously titled “Spenser Confidential” is a high-testosterone action thriller about a red-blooded, blue-collared, perpetually open-mouthed American patriot who decides to take matters into his own hands when some bad guys besmirch the good name of these United States. Just kidding — the only significant difference between this chaotic dreck and the likes of “Mile 22” is that “Spenser Confidential” is going straight to Netflix.

Beyond that — and maybe a surprising cameo from Post Malone — . By now, WahlBerg making a “funny” crime movie about an aggro ex-cop trying to sniff out corruption in South Boston is like if Wes Anderson made a “Succession”-esque screwball comedy about an inbred family jostling for control over a Bavarian tweed factory.

Watch Post Malone, Mark Wahlberg in Trailer for Netflix Action Movie
Post Malone plays a prison inmate in the trailer for Spenser Confidential, the upcoming Netflix action-comedy film from director Peter Berg. Mark Wahlberg, Winston Duke, Alan Arkin and Iliza Shlesinger star in the movie, which hits the streaming platform on March 6th.

The clip opens with imprisoned Boston detective Spenser (Wahlberg) getting into a brawl with a group of fellow inmates. From there, he’s released from jail and links up with his former mentor and boxing coach, Henry (Arkin), and a new roommate, aspiring Mma fighter Hawk (Duke). When...

Mark Wahlberg & Winston Duke Serve Justice in First Trailer for Peter Berg’s Spenser Confidential
The career of Peter Berg is a roller coaster ride of ups and downs. There’s the throwback highs of The Rundown and strong drama of Friday Night Lights mixed with sturdy biographical films such as Lone Survivor and Deepwater Horizon then incomprehensible actioners like Battleship and Mile 22. He’s now back quickly after the quickly forgotten lattermost film and reteaming once again with Mark Wahlberg.

Spenser Confidential, also starring Winston Duke, Alan Arkin, Iliza Shlesinger and Austin Post, follows an ex-cop who serves some jail time after being framed by dirty cops and upon getting out, serves up some vigilante justice. Berg looks to be in a more playful mode here while still delivering the action beats he’s known for, so hopefully this is some diverting entertainment.

See the trailer and poster below.

Mark Wahlberg & Alan Arkin in First Trailer for 'Spenser Confidential'
"It's time you tell me what's really going on here." Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for Spenser Confidential, the latest film from the actor-director team-up Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg. Based on the "Wonderland" book series, Wahlberg plays an ex-cop named Spenser, of course. Just out of prison and trying to escape Boston, he is sucked back into Boston's criminal underbelly when two Boston Police officers are murdered. He teams up with his no-nonsense roommate, Hawk, to take down some criminals in this Boston crime world action-comedy. Also starring Winston Duke, Alan Arkin, Colleen Camp, Bokeem Woodbine, Michael Gaston, Marc Maron, Iliza Shlesinger, with an appearance by Post Malone. This looks like exactly what you'd expect from Peter Berg, which nowadays means some forgettable action nonsense. Berg keeps churning these out. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Peter Berg's Spenser Confidential, from Netflix's YouTube: Spenser (Mark...
