    Romanians are not Gypsies

Again, Romanians are not Gypsies! Gypsies are a minority in Romania and the point of this documentary is making it seem like all Romanians are thieves and beggars. We're not! We really do have cars and rather modern cities. We don't ride horses to work! We are not that poor. Why is every documentary or show about Romania making it seem like we steal jobs and basically steal all we can get our hands on. We are first of all white Caucasians. I am not racist but let's get our facts right. Our ancestors were the ancient Dacians and later our territory was conquered by the Romans and suffered the process of romanization. We spoke Latin, we were modernized by them. All the theories say that we are the descendants of the Roman Empire. Look it up on Wikipedia under Romanians. We were part of one of the greatest empires that ever was, us R.o.m.a.n.i.a.n.s. Please do not confuse us with the Romani, or Romi as we call them, the Gypsies. They are a minority here in Romania. Just like the Hungarians in Transilvania, just like the emigrants from the Moldavian Republic in Moldova. Transilvania and Moldova are both Romanian regions. But Moldavians and Hungarians are not Romanian and neither are the Gypisies. We are not responsible for them. They do not belong to our country and it's not our fault that they went to in different European countries because they are a minority, not a population with a country. They belong to everyone not only us so stop making documentaries about them saying they left our horrible country to pillage others. Wikipedia about Gypsies says: "The Romani (also spelled Romany; / ˈroʊməni/, /ˈrɒ-/), or Roma, are a traditionally itinerant ethnic group, living mostly in Europe and the Americas and originating from the northern regions of the Indian subcontinent, presumably from where the states Rajasthan, Haryana, and Punjab exist today. The Romani are widely known among English-speaking people by the exonym "Gypsies" (or "Gipsies"), which some people consider controversial due to its connotations of illegality and irregularity."They originated from the northen regions of the Indian subcontinent. I am a citizen of Romania and this documentary is based on falsities and makes my country look bad and I do not agree with it!

I think the other reviews misunderstood

This documentary was heartfelt and portrayed both the good and the bad, with the bad mostly struggling people who, if they were British and not foreign, would be viewed as having mental health problems instead of just being inherently 'bad people/ thieves/ criminals'.

I think the other reviewers have misunderstood the documentary. It makes very clear that only some of the Romanians filmed are Roma, and it is clear about which they are. It films people who come to the U. K. with absolutely nothing, but it also films those who have qualifications and jobs, who came from a life they loved in Romania (see: the nurse). I thought it was an honest and unbiased series, and it opened my eyes to a lot. I really enjoyed it and found it incredibly touching in places. It also made me laugh at times, and I feel I've learned more about the reasons people migrate to the U. K. - as well as how difficult it can be for people. I found it shocking that people sometimes have to live in such conditions, and I thought all who were filmed are brave, with most putting up with awful lives for the good of their families.

Another Frustrated NoBody makes a movie to feel "above"

You can make people from any nation look like this.

The Americans are coming. The Europeans are coming. The Russians are coming. The Chinese are coming. So what ? Everybody "is coming the same way" when you search for people at the bottom of any society. How do you people think Nazi propaganda started in Germany ? It's the same with the ethnic Hungarians from Romania. They make these Nazi movies to tare down the country they live in, while at the top of Romanian society. I wonder how live of this "Romanian" director Fechete, looks like... living in Romania at the top of the Romanian Society. So watch this movie and get to know who's coming, through the eyes of a naive and frustrated wannabe something ... who knows what.

well, where do i start ?

I am a mixed Romanian/English citizen with parents from both countries and I can actually say that this was painful !

Its true Romanian does have areas that frankly you are afraid to walk through but !!! most of it is a normal country with normal people. Why do people try to move their political agendas by making documentaries that portray the bottom of the barrel ?

If you go though the UK, you will find similar people that are British and live in similar conditions !

I for example have a degree, a job, a house, a English wife, my friends are of mixed races ranging from Romanian, African, British, Oriental and all of them function well in the society, contribute and to be frank if we didn't need immigrants why are we letting them in ?

The person sitting at home claiming benefits because they cant be asked to work: WHO DO YOU THINK PAYS FOR YOUR BENEFITS ?

In conclusion quite a few (birth) Brits were disappointed with this weak attempt to denigrate a nation of hard working people !

    Ethnocentric at best

That said Romanians are not Romani and G*psy is a slur unless you're Romani it's exactly like the n-word. Lots of racism in the comments and yes all of Europe need to take a hard look at themselves for their treatment of my people. That said Romania is an exceedingly special case in that they enslaved Roma for over 500 years in the exact manner the U. S. enslaved Africans however here we teach the history and in Romania they hide it. Maybe correct the way you teach history and the world won't get so confused.

    • Trivia
Director/producer/cinematographer James Bluemel on his film: "I spent a year filming Romanians in the process of leaving their country to come and live in ours. I was with them as they wrestled with the idea of leaving their homes; I was with them when they said tearful goodbyes to their wives, their children and their elderly parents; I was with them when they arrived in the "new country"; and I was there as they began to look for work and attempted to build some sort of a life here. The decision to leave your family and move to another country cannot be an easy one to make. It's something you would do only if you really needed to.(...)That level of commitment and determination is impressive. British people moan that foreigners are taking British jobs, but I wonder how many Brits would be willing to endure what Adi does in order to support their family. The fundamental right to free movement for EU citizens is important, correct and valuable, but let's not be blasé. Leaving your family and friends behind as you move 2,000 miles across Europe in the hope of finding a job is not a decision that anyone takes lightly. It's a scary and painful thing to do. It rips families apart and it destroys communities. It is not something that should have to happen. For many of the Romanians I met, the phrase "freedom to move" is contradictory, as where is the freedom in having no choice but to leave your country to search for work? It's important and correct that we have that right to free movement, but let's not confuse the life of a migrant worker with freedom."[Feb. 17th 2015, New Statesman]
